Master of my own was actually a pretty good drama. Sadly almost noone seems to know about it. Its pretty straight forward and predictable but thats actually works for it if you ask me.
@annacoello76232 жыл бұрын
I’m SO glad you mentioned “Master of my Own.” The ML was verbally abusive to her for over 3 years. Towards the end of the drama when he has character growth, they pass it off as “he was protecting her in his own way.” Freaking horrible. It was abuse. While I think his character growth is somewhat plausible, the way they gloss over how horrible he was to her is sickening. Then enters the guy who ACTUALLY hits her. People are in a tizzy and want her to dump him. But the abuse from the ML is ok?! Seriously? Then, the physical hitting is passed off as “past trauma that he hasn’t moved on from” or “his ex cheated and he just never got over it.” The drama doesn’t have him take the blame. It makes excuses for him. Not that I don’t think these characters shouldn’t be humanized. But for God’s sakes, can we just get rid of the stupid trope that men can be assholes if they are sad/hurt? There is no excuse for abuse. Physical or verbal. The FL was great. I loved her. I just didn’t like what they did with her character when she “rescued” the ex boyfriend by encouraging him to become his former “good man” self. And he just does it. Um. As a therapist who has worked with abusers, it was appalling.
@anara9672 жыл бұрын
Some people would still recommend the drama saying that the point of the drama was the development of ML. But why do such ML not know that they should have basic respect for their colleagues and employees. Why do they need to learn in later in life? If a female characters had such a storyline she would be the villian of the story not the main lead. It's sad the type of 'romantic' stories being fed to people.
@WitchlightNW2 жыл бұрын
yeah i will watch anything but i had to drop master of my own because i hated the ML so much and couldn't get past his scummy abusive behaviour in the beginning and accept how they would turn it into a relationship at the end. I got through almost half the drama watching it only for FL and the relationship she developed with her new boss
@armitageplace2 жыл бұрын
I remember thinking that there was no possible way they could redeem the ML enough to make him worthy of being a love interest. But they were able to do that by making the 2ML an actual stalker and abuser. Yeah, okay, in comparison the toxic boss looks like a viable option, but that's setting the bar low enough that it is going through the floor.

Who Rules The World was a guilty pleasure. I’m almost shocked that I finished it. There were so many logical fallacies and towards the end the fight scenes became so ridiculous… the CG had no adherence to gravity or the laws of physics… the characters looked like blurry video game graphics in one episode, flitting through the sky like inflatable tube dolls. Also I wanted to say that I came across an old Cdrama called “Maiden Holmes.” While there were lots of problems from a production point, I can easily say that the ML had me wishing for more ML’s like him. He was amazing. It takes one or two episodes to really see his character; but the way he treats her when they are together is so sweet. And very progressive. Also; the kisses are swooney.

My take on that series was that it was a bit silly, but the ML was definitely a standout, especially as these really overbearing and even abusive ML's become the norm. In this time of COVID lockdowns in China, what people need are escapist dramas that are watchable. In the Great Depression, Hollywood produced light and cheerful escapist comedies and musicals to lift the spirits of a suffering world. Chinese production companies are missing a great opportunity to help their fellow countrymen in their time of great trial (and international viewers would also benefit from some pure escapist entertainment). What are they waiting for?

Who Rules The World isn't without flaws. There were parts that were like "huh?", but somehow I still enjoyed it cause there were also a lot of nice things about it. It has its HIT and MISSED moments, especially the episodes near the end. However, its Hits easily outweighed its Missed moments, so it's still a good show in my view. Its biggest missed moment for me was probably the background CGI of the final fight scene. I was expecting a more polished CGI from this production, especially for the finale, so that part was a letdown, and very cringy. Its biggest Hit for me is how the main characters were written and the growth of their relationship. From frenemies to friends, friends to MU (mutual understanding), to boyfriend and girlfriend, to husband and wife. They have a very supportive and mature relationship.
@chibivesicle96122 жыл бұрын
I waited to watch this video until after I finished WRTW. All in all I agree with your excellent summary. It by no means was earth shattering TV, but it was like a visual spa day. I too loved how the BFX and HFX had a relationship that grew and evolved and wasn't stupid. The ending was rushed and suffered the same issue that WOH had where things were okay and then became a mess. My honest WTF moment was early on about how HFX kept himself hidden from his own family. Lord of Yongzhou, your own intelligence network sucks man. Hire new people. But with over 2 years of burnout and weirdness all around, this hit the spot. The bonus was Feng Qiwu who was an excellent supporting female character who also - becomes a BFF with BFX and doesn't need to marry a dude when HFX turns her down.
@miajoseph34942 жыл бұрын
@@chibivesicle9612 Yeah the ending was really rushed, but apparently, it's because it was supposed to be a 45 episodes series, but due to China's new rule of "40 episodes limit" for all dramas, they had to cut it down to 40. Imagine 5 episodes eliminated, no wonder the alliance seemed to have happened overnight. They should have just cut down some episodes of the stepmother's scheming instead of the finale. About Qiwu, you're absolutely right. I thought I was gonna hate her cause she was going to be a third party in the HFX and BFX relationship, but no. To my surprise, she proved herself to be more than the usual vengeful and too proud for rejection female character, even becoming BFF with BFX. She handled it with class, a truly educated and noble lady. That's another thing I like about this drama, there were other strong female characters aside from BFX, like lady Feng Qiwu, Ms. Huan, and Princess Hua. They were strong and smart in their own way without the need to demean male characters. This is the second Hit moment for me of this drama - Women Empowering done right. Even Prince Huang Cao's camp has a female general which is really cool.
@chibivesicle96122 жыл бұрын
@@miajoseph3494 Ah that 40 episode rule makes so much sense - I agree they should have cut the inter-family scheming and kept the bigger picture focus at the end. It would have served the story and pacing a lot better. I wish editors were a little bit better at taking a step back when faced with time constraints like this one. I'm so glad someone else out there loved the fact that the female characters were good in this drama! I was just like you with Feng Qiwu! I thought to myself - 'Oh man, she's gonna get all upset and become a toxic terrible female role . . .' when instead, she immediately recognizes the growing relationship between BFX and HFX - and helps BFX notice what HFX is doing. And when the two of them team up and poor HFX is like 'notice me please' was adorable. Princess Hua's line to her assistant/maid about how that 'as a woman, things I do have to be 10x more epic then men to get respect' was so on point. I wasn't a huge fan of her character - but I respected her character as she recognized what she had to deal with to become more successful. The writing of these female characters was overall - solid. I know Feng Qiwu would not actually be a minister historically but it is nice to a more modern take on things since it is half wuxia.

I heard a lot of criticisms toward WRTW in mainland but honestly as a nonchinese person who grew up watching chinese costume dramas when I was young, I really love this series and place it highly in my heart. Chinese costume drama has always been about fantasies. Fantasy that human can fly and wield the swords at the speed of light and kill a person without touching. It has always been like that and I don't mind the director to add more fantasies about this wugong as I grow older. So, I don't personally find it is illogical and I mostly focus more on the execution of the show, the story, and the relationship between leads which is very pleasant to my eyes. The wit of the leads made me in awe. My only complaint is the ending is too rushed and the scriptwriter seem to can't find a better plot that could end in 40 EPs. Despite this, WRTW is my most favorite series in 10 years. I disagree with some people saying ZL acting is bad. Her acting skill isn't top notch but certainly ain't as bad as people say. BFX character is supposed to be like that.. smart, intelligence, graceful, compose, strong but playful, lazy, and greedy at the same time. She's supposed to be intelligence and a deep thinker. Therefore she doesn't wear all emotions on her face from the beginning. And for the stabbing part, she was in the state of sadness/grieve/numbness knowing her teacher was killed. That's why her facial expression was like that. If it's not because she's letting her guard down, how could Langhua stab no.1 martial art person like that?

I actually liked Master of my own. I liked the fact that the characters were consistent in their behaviour. I can see why Ning Ming put up with her boss in the initial episode. She is not a person who resort to violence or humiliation but she is a fighter and is not afraid to prove it. This can be seen when she fights to prove as an investor in Joint capital initially and later with the kitchen appliance company. She not one to back out from something she believes. In joint capital, she was proud of the fact that she was capable enough to handle her boss. She has great respect for the ML as an investor and does not see him as a bad person. She genuinely wishes to grow with the company. That being said she was never willing to pursue a romantic relationship with the ML initially. She was never blind to the flaws of ML. When she found that she liked him, she was shocked. And when ML confessed to her, she did not reciprocate. She only reciprocated later in the show where ML started to talk without sounding mean. Even if she like him, she was not okay to put herself in a space were she was put down.

I was just ranting about this as I was watching Love in flames of war. I couldn't believe the show could be so frustrating. The one that I have watched from this list is Who Rules the World and Master of my Own. I think within the first few episodes of Who rules the world I told myself, I am just gonna watch this for Yang Yang and Lusi cause they look good. Other than that the plot line was so confusing. The wanted to be clever like Nirvana in Fire but the script writer got lazy and decided that the show will do good enough based on leads looks. I think Master of my Own would have worked better if they had a different male lead. I can imagine that kind of arrogant boss but no boss will diss their own assistant like that. Specially insulting her in private time when surrounded with mutual friends.

I totally agree with you. I have walked away from so many Chinese dramas this past year after watching anywhere from 3 to 8 episodes. The sad fact is that they have my favorite actors in them, but for all the analyzed details you’ve discussed it’s becoming harder to find a drama I can stick with to its ending. These include Modern dramas and Historical period dramas that are dry as dust. So far Sword Snow Stride was decent, but it left things hanging in mid-air, unfinished.

What’s wrong with Lin Gengxin’s Northeast accent when the character in the drama is from northern east of China? Lin Gengxin’s line delivery is ok, he graduated from Shanghai theater academy, the academy acknowledged his line delivery thus gave him the degree, he does not need to go back to school. I found out you always like to diss actor’s line delivery but I only agree with you about a couple of actors. You seems to have a prejudice towards actors with accent even they only have a tiny bit. Actors are allowed to have accents in my opinion, it’s even better if it fits the characters’ origin. I see a lot of western actors having accents like British accent, Australia accent, southern American accent etc, and I don’t see anyone complaining about that. During the pre-vax stage of pandemic, I got heavily into The Untamed and then watched Word of Honor as it was being released. Afterward, I went looking for more C-dramas like them. I naively expected Chinese Dramaland to be a live-action Crunchyroll - maybe not everything being BL, but action-packed stuff with a heart and a brain. To my disillusionment, I found that contemporary Chinese Dramaland is closer in spirit to The Hallmark Channel - just keep churning out formula, formula, formula until it sells. There were exceptions - Luyong and Sword Snow Stride actually met expectations - but for the most part, I’m finding Chinese comics, novels and animation a lot more interesting than the dramas. Maybe that will change once they let all those BL dramas that are in the can out of Censorship Jail. (People have been waiting for Immortality for what, two years now?)

I'm following Master of my Own right now and I must say that I'm hooked on this one. It is really an enjoyable modern drama. Go check it out! Now that being said, I'm not an expert on Chinese language (I'm not Chinese) so to me how the ML delivers his lines I have no any knowledge whether he does it right or wrong, but one thing I really enjoy is that they are not dubbed so to my ears it sounds natural. Also like the characters of the 2nd ML & FL, though the latter annoyed me at first, but I think they play their parts well. And of course the leads will end up together (thank God for that; Mr. Lu is so much better than her "Senior"). The twist later on in the story is something that I do find pleasant as well. But, like I mentioned before: I'm watching this drama from an "amateur" point of view. I've laughed, cried, felt angry, annoyed, touched and happy and those are the things that I look for in a drama.

I have to admit that Who rule the world did let me down . I became so frustrated more and more as I kept watching .
7:58, if the cumulative experience of dying is so traumatic, then his choice to jump of the ledge to save her could seem more touching. imho I once slipped and fell on my head and fell unconscious and remember my last moments as looking through smoky glass and remembering this is what it is to go to sleep. (or maybe dying) I didn't feel any pain. Perhaps the experiences of numerous traumatic deaths might be numbed like this. Also they said that Mr. Bai's younger brother was left with a subconscious fear of pain/dying even if he didn't clearly remember all of his deaths. I guess, I wanted to see the romance between Li Luduo and Mr. Bai and how they helped each other to become better. The show gave me much of that, but had to re-watch a number of times to see it more clearly in detail. My only complaint was that sometimes the FL and ML's smiles seemed rigid or forced. Her outfit during the dinner with Mr. Bai wasn't the most attractive. I didn't know about the vocal switch. Thank you.
