Katherine Canon I thought Destiny of White Snake was amazing, although very depressing. The emotions were portrayed so well and the scenes were taken beautifully. Also, it wasn't meant to follow the actual legend. It's an adaptation.

As an asian drama lover, Chinese dramas never fail to get me to stop watching half way bc the storyline gets so BAD and dramatic and draggy that it gets really frustrating to watch. I am not a fan of historical dramas so I'm not even talking about those (though they are problematic too and there's just SO MUCH of them). They have great plots that gets dumbed down as the drama goes on and the execution is lacking most of the time. It's so annoying bc you see the same thing happening on every dramas. Also the popular actors tend to pick good dramas at the start of their career and once they're popular THEN they start picking out shitty dramas, collect their pay and does the same cycle again. Can't even trust them now for good projects. This is a bit out of topic but their variety shows are SO AWKWARDLY EDITED it's so cringy to watch. I can BARELY get through an ep of Happy Camp. Don't even get me started on the product placements.....

Kalmilon yweng As an asian Drama lover you can be interested in C Drama and let down over and over again. I always start watching the new C Dramas because I like the language and sometimes there is a gem there, so every drama deserves a chance. In the end I only watch like 10% of all the ones I started because many of them are really horrible. Stop acting like checking out new Dramas is wrong.

I actually like most of asian drama but for some reason C-Drama nowadays is so crappy and the acting is soOoOOOo BaD and I feel that my hand is curling so much watching them (i feel no emotion watching them except "cringe?!") they have no expression, just flat poker face. And even though that there's a sad scene or heart breaking scene (maybe not much), they always cry beautifuly (not everyone can cry beautifuly). The supposed to be funny scene is awkward that make me feel like "ugh... seriously?" And thats why I never finish watching the C-drama, mostly up to 3 episode to determine is it worth to continue watching.

Yeah I was just enjoying one drama called The Legends 招摇 then they went ahead and diverted the story from the novel 3 quarter of the way through just so they can extend it by 10 episodes. Now it's a mess that doesn't make any sense. Chinese film/tv industry is now in the phase of just chasing after the money. No one seems to be interested in advancing the industry itself

Could you please review "Goodbye my Princess". I recently finished watching all 52 episodes and the show has really created a great impact on me. The show is realistic in its own ways and very heart breaking and crooked yet innocent and pure at the same time. To top that off, the leading actors (and basically the whole cast for that matter) do such a good job in portraying their respective characters. It creates such an interesting and massive impact on its audience, to a point that, even if they'd want to stop watching it after a certain amount of time, they'd find themselves incapable of looking away. It's currently my most favorite drama series.

Ashes of Love was one of my first chinese drama and it is 10000000 times better than any japanese or korean drama I've watched until now (which is a lot) So yeah, go watch Ashes of Love.

Fuyao is my favourite drama ever! I watched it twice and plan to rematch it regularly. Ashes had great acting, great CGI, it was super emotional, but it made me so angry the whole time! It's masochistic to watch it in my opinion.

The Ashes of Love premise of forcibly taking the throne and having to then earn it for the rest of your existence was so powerfully done in that show. It's the classic "You made the bed, and now you have to lie in it"/ "make the cake and eat it too" theme that was so well executed. People watch that show for the main love story, but Runyu's arc was easily the greatest thing to ever come to mankind since Michael Jackson and sliced bread.

Honestly tho I'm like you. I pay attention to everything in the drama to decide whether I should continue watching. If I take one look at it and notice it has a cheap budget I dont have high expectations but I say just to see acting and if the acting starts really bad I might stay for another episode to see if it gets better but if ep 2 is not better than ep 1 then I leave cuz I know its gonna waste my time

These days I think the best drama in Chinese dramaland might be the things happening behind the scenes. Not just weird political stuff like the censoring, but the whole universe of rules and regulations and production machinations. I'm more interested in that aspect of things and that's why I like watching your videos, since you give us a good insight in that world. Now that being said, the drama about the makeup duels... Sounds pretty interesting I must say. The pictures you found to illustrate (especially the one with colors bursting out of buildings) make it the more enticing haha.

I never noticed the oversaturation of Legend of White Snake, and it doesn't bother me that much. I honestly like the show, despite the male lead being a very boring human being. I did notice that there's barely any intimacy between the two leads, so I keep looking at them and thinking of how boring they are together. Imagine inviting them over to a party. They'd be quietly sitting in a corner, watching everyone else have fun. Then 2 hours later, one of them will claim to be tired or need to get to bed early so they can wake up on time for work in the morning. Then they leave the party at 8pm and drive their little beater back to their little quiet house, resuming their quiet, boring, unassuming life. That's how I saw this couple in the show.

Please do a review on Goodbye My Princess! The drama just finished airing about a week ago! I wasn’t too sure about watching another novel adaptation drama especially this one since I really like the author’s novel of it but the cast did great and both main leads are not really popular but I think it will from now on since the drama kind of blew up. @@shalinipaturi7947 If you read the novel, you've hated him more because he's more mean and cruel in the book which makes it harder for him to justify his actions or even redeem himself. Both main leads are such emotion driven characters and that's why I think the story is sadder. I thought Li Cheng Yi justified a lot of his actions such as why he attacked her tribe (because he was ordered to by his father) or why he faked loved his other consort "so much." I did think tho he redeemed himself a little because he accepted Xiao Feng's wishes, if the ending was just like the book, I would have felt that he never redeemed himself but the drama made it a little different because they probably didn't want people to see him as a truly selfish evil character and so that's why I felt he redeemed himself a little. Sorry for the long comment.

I really happy that among the others, the legend of white snake was the least horrible drama that you ranted.. I watched this version and 2018 version(forgot to mention why i included this... 2018 not my favourite... Interesting coz the story was different from other and both of ending unexpectedly not make me angry but the rest... meh) keep my expectation low and unexpectedly happy with the result... For now i just refresh my memories (coz i really really really young when watched the 92 vers...) And still hope for improve. PS: the drama really have good material for editing, even for the poor apps! From super excited and super optimist fan

I've recently gotten addicted to Chinese dramas as a side-trip from Japanese dramas and both Japanese and Chinese idols.. I tried to watch Legend of White Snake, and did not even finish the first episode, turned it off just after the fight scene, where the snake interrupted. The animation of the snake was so bland that I couldn't watch any further. kind of glad I didn't get to the parts with Ju Jing-yi, since I actually like her from SNH48, she was actually the one that got me started watching the Chinese dramas, with the music videos for Novoland.

Normally I enjoy watching your opinion videos. I usually don't comment on a video unless I'm highly hyped or pissed off. I became a fan of Ju Jingyi (for her acting before I realized she is also a talented musician) since Legend of YunXi; I loved she was given free reign with her facial expressions there and thought her acting was en pointe even though the story line should have stayed truer to the novel. And I thoroughly enjoyed her performance in Novoland and PhantaCity. I think she is a very good actress; I can't wait to see "Please Give Me a Pair of Wings" when it airs. Here in White Snake, I think the director and cinematographer should take a good chunk of the blame as I do agree with you on the visuals (which washed out a lot of subtle facial expressions) and bland stills. (Watch their BTS; it gives one a good idea on what the director wants to depict and the actors' personalities.) While I have to admit I have my own personal bias to extensive PS, especially to "big boob" jobs, your rant went beyond professional when you started personal attacks on their PS. By doing so, you should then lament on stars like Yang Mi and Zheng Shuang and hundreds of others who have had PS of some kind and their own share of bad acting at certain given points in their careers. It looks like Ju Jingyi might have gotten her chin and nose sharper defined based on an old video of her first audition for SH48, but she must have had it done while she was about 20 years old. Considering her age, It also leads one to wonder how much say and pressure is brought upon by Agencies that market actors and actresses to undergo certain enhancements before they will represent you.

I agreee. Like it looks out of touch. Unlike most shows in the past, I feel like they have really lost the posture and movements of characters in period dramas. If you look at the old version of white snake, although their hand gestures were a little excess, the way they walk had a poetic way to it that made it look graceful. Now we have lead characters walking around swinging their arms about looking so out of touch.

Netflix put out an fantastic Chinese drama called The Handsome Siblings, and in my opinion, did The Untamed better than The Untamed. The main character also reminded me of Xiaotian from The Dark Lord, which is my all-time favorite Chinese drama.

Sadly I did watched few episodes of the first drama that you mentioned. It's quite hard to totally find a good drama these days. Most are crappy either bad scripts or bad acting (by inexperienced new, good looking or popular idols person). Mainly targeting younger viewers. I think they are out to make profit rather than quality.

I'm only at 8:30 of your critique right now, but I wonder if was a stylistic choice to have the actors be more modern in the way they move and act even though it's in a more historical setting. Some Western (American/Brit/hybrid) films and some theatre productions have done that sort of anachronistic thing purposefully. Or am I giving the creators of this too much artistic credit?

Remember that the Chinese film industry is very young. There is a lot of imitation of foreign trends (how actors with big eyes become the most popular, everyone wants a sculpted K-pop face, and everyone acts like an anime character), but it's just that. Imitation. Put simply, most directors are not professional enough to put together a successful and respectful "fusion" production. This is just cheap quality, unfortunately.

Totally agree on the greatest drama of all time. Legend of the white snake of 1992 was indeed the best!!! I loved it still remember it and I still hum the songs from that drama.

For Chong'Er, rather than the lead being related to a powerful political figure it is more likely that one of the shows investors is related to one unless the lead is also one of the major investor. It also seems to be 3 years late and have 12 extra episodes.

Both Destiny of the white snake and Legend of the white snake are on Netflix bcuz that's where I saw them. Once I saw the snake in Destiny of the white snake I was out but I watched legend of the white snake up to like 4 episodes didn't have any complaints about it, I was going to watch it back but if a drama didn't impress me enough through first couple episodes. I'd say I'll come back and watch it but then I end up forgetting the series itself. I didn't remember until I saw your video and was like oh yeah that I forgot about that and I was watching it while it was airing at the time and it's been a whole year and didn't go back

My board exam is going on. 3 months ago when I was watching "ashes of love" that time me and my best friend was too addicted Chinese historical. Well our parents gave us warning to focus on study. I just watched 36 episodes of "ashes of love". It was so good. Yesterday I asked my friend what to watch after exam. Like finishing the rest aol. Thanks for not making interesting dramas. Cause we can concentrate on our study.

White Snake is so bad, I agree. I'm on ep9 , and it's so dreary. The Destiny of the White Snake, with Yang Zi, which is a different take on the story, altogether, is honestly a lot more fun. The Green Snake and demon hunter, they are captivating (when watching the uncut version.) Mao Zi Jun makes me weak. I'm watching Legend of Hao Lan after I'm finished with DoWS, because I can't watch the same lead, in two dramas at once. I know the Legends has finished airing, but it's still being translated, and I'm in LOVE with Bai Lu, she's yum. My favourite, from last year, was Rise of Phoenixes. I loved Yanxi Palace and Ming Lan, but RoP killed me. I have to mention Bloody Romance, as well, it really surprised me at times.

The second one you mention, some other poor youtuber reviewed it and I agree the makeup is for blind people. It was so ugly no sane female would do that to themselves. My screen dimmer turns down the colour temperature which makes everything have a warmer colour. So when I watched Chinese dramas with it on it basically reversed to post production filters. I was surprised that their skin looked non white again. The Chinese media and beauty standards needs to calm down with trying so aggressively make everyone look white. Sigh

It's really hard for me to watch dramas these days in general, EVEN QUAN ZHI GAO SHOU, I have reasons for being really pissed off right now, but I am still going to see it because Yang Yang can manage to turn things around a little. I really hope other good dramas come out. As a Chinese person, I love the dramas to an extent, but if it's Mary Sue or just those annoyings tropes. I'm gone. I'm just gone.

I keep checking the airing historicals because they tend to be the only C-dramas I watch but nothing managed to pique my interest so far. Why is everything so awful and uninspired nowadays (be it plot, sets and costumes, or stories)? I don't think there's been a really big drama that everyone's raving about since Eternal Love and it's been three years now (besides Guardian because it's a different story). Any ideas, AvenueX?

I think the painting-like aesthetic looks good to me. These things are subjective. On the point of those makeup looks, runway models purposefully try to keep the makeup out of the way so you can focus on the clothes. The second show sounds ridiculous but that makeup doesn't seem crazy in any way, I mean, have you ever seen drag(not saying it negatively, just meant that's more transformative)? Let's not shame people. People should wear what they want.

I totalky agree with you ,i have been trying to make aware of this isdue several times and i was called a rascist ,i mean if anything entertainment and sports industry usually is what brings different cultures together cos it cuts accross culture,not only that when they are doing dramas that are adapted from book ,they make so much mess of it to the point it is unrecognisable ,is like cdrama is moving backwards and not forward ,their aversion to romance i still can't make a sense of it ,a4e they still living in the dark ages and also issue of lesbians and gays in cdrama ,they will so much deface it that the story become something else ,and too much pursuing of beauty that the actors and actresses looks unnatural.,it is mind blowing in a negative way what is going on with cdrama ,is becomming worse by day.
