Ahhh listening to your side of the story was really interesting, I think the details you described in the perspective (child) that you had could easily be transformed into a refreshing, grounded script. I just wish so hardly that dramaland would begin to produce dramas/shows that reveal to the rest of us the lives of the people we didn’t expect or never knew existed, that would be such a diverse, intriguing learning experience I feel…

Yeah it would definitely be a much better anti-corruption story than the usual crackdown drama. It really shows to what level corruption f*cks up people's lives.

Your life story would make for a much more moving and authentic script! I was captivated by the crime drama "Chasing the Undercurrent" that also dealt with corruption and conflicting family and professional relationships. But to see a story from a child's viewpoint would be really moving. Especially since you grew up in China's "Gotham City" as you humorously described it! Write that script!

Corruption in real life, especially when it's entrenched in the government (as is usually the case in countries where there's a big wealth gap between the poor and the wealthy), is the stuff of tragedies and causes generational trauma. I used to live in such a country and if I hadn't left I probably would've done something to myself so that I don't exist. I'm always grateful to my mom for opening that door that allowed me to leave (even though it wasn't her intention at the time haha).

I started watching this drama and kind of expected the ending would be watered down. I think the problem with a lot of crime/justice c-dramas is that they always try to sanitize the police, judges, or any other government people to the point that it doesn’t make a good story anymore. You can show bad police but they cannot be that bad, that sort of thing is going to kill a story no matter who the director or script writer is. I have cut down on watching crime-related c-dramas for this reason, I only watch the shorter episodes ones so I don’t waste too much time and hope too high only to find a blah ending 😅

This has happened to me so many times, where I love a drama SO MUCH during one part of it, but then I HATE it at the end, and it just makes it so hard to rate, because, like you said, how do you even do that? I just finished watching it and I think you’re absolutely spot on about the show. I love the acting and the story in general, but I can’t help and think that this is yet another cdrama that fell victim to China’s censorship which is kinda sad, because I think it has the potential to be a great show, personally I would rate ep1 - ep26 (2000 & 2006) as 8.5-9/10, but things start to fall apart after ep26. I also feel like that the show could benefit from having more episodes, because the show seems to have missed a lot of the events and characters development for the later period of the story - 2006 onwards. For example, the part about the rivalry between Zhao and Meng was pretty much non-existence likely due to censorship, but then I also think they did a poor job of explaining how Meng’s family became involved in Gao’s mess…etc.

Gao Qiqiang played by Zhang Songwen is such an amazing character to watch. I agree that the actors and story are the best in this drama though I expected the last part to be what it’s like coz I know how Cdrama works after watching so many of them. I totally blame the censorship. The acting and story are so real such that it made me relate back to all the govt staff I met & my police friends in China. I don’t think I’ll be able to naively trust any of them now 😅 Anyway, I still love the drama & I’m not surprised if Zhang Songwen will win Best Actor this year.

Indeed difficult to clearly find out which party suggested to modify the plot. As far as I know, sometimes it is just a suggestion of a certain department or research group, which makes the producer decide to modify it in order to avoid possible troubles in the future.

Some of their clips seems great so I'll try to watch it. By the way, January was a magical month for Chinese entertainment. That month was one of the few times when many people were sharing on social media scenes or clips of Chinese series and films. Then, it is becoming easier and easier to Iqiyi to make popular dramas. I have watched 2 episodes and kept it on hold. I haven't dropped the drama. I am currently watching A league of noblemen and watching two crime dramas simultaneously messes up my mind. Second reason would be Zhang Yi. I feel he can't play a younger version of himself. Like even in Be reborn where he was remembering his past as young policeman, its not very convincing. I felt same here. He as a young recruit is not very convincing. l will give this drama a try, later. I enjoy police drama from several countries. After watching Zhang Yi in Reborn and Be Reborn I had to follow him into The Knockout. There are many good actors in this drama. If you don't watch the first episode carefully all the other episodes leave a person lost. Also I do not ship people when watching any series. It's the first series from China since Be Reborn I enjoyed. Anything else the Chinese censor board produces is of no interest to me. China left us out in the cold, for a best guest, 179 drama shows. Why anyone pays attention to them is beyond me.

What a waste of time and emotional energy to invest in a drama that fails you in the end. This is so common these days! Also, what a waste of childhood when a parents stress seriously affects a child. I would guess that your mother, who also had a stressful job ( MD), was very supportful.

Can you/anyone please explain how Chinese TV works? How can tv channels air one season of new dramas all through the year? In fact how does most Asian TV works? UK and US tv runs on dramas running for multiple seasons. Thanks in advance.
@nobodyqwertyu Жыл бұрын
It's very rare in China, and also Korea and Japan, for TV shows to have multiple seasons. They are simply written for a number of episodes and that is that. It's hard to explain why, it's just the industry culture. Korea is slowinly having more "multiple season" dramas, but it's really just a format where they release half the episodes, wait, and then release the rest a few months later.

Not interested in cdramas in crime/corruption genre. Did run into posts about high-ranking provincial officials interfering with this type of dramas, including one official who wanted one such drama to be taken down. Was puzzled by a random post saying that this drama's ending made the drama like a BL-adaptation. Never underestimate shippers' abilities to ship anything and everything. I was surprised a few years ago when I came across shipping blood brothers. It's supposedly The Thing in "Supernatural" fandom. Such cp should be safe in a sense because men can't birth children. Until the fandom created the ABO (sub)genre. Regarding somewhat similar childhood experience, we, the children, had to pick up the phone or answer the door telling people that no adult was home and we weren't allowed to take things from strangers. I'm pretty sure I learned lying from my parents. Plus side is I've never had trouble being assertive or saying "no" to anyone.
