I really love that you help place the drama in history and critique aspects of the drama for being so far off history that it impedes the telling. I had no idea they killed all the concubines (which seems like a pretty $hitty life to begin with). I totally agree that seeing the bright costumes true to the dynasty time period would have been refreshing, and telling the story with at least an understanding of the history would have made it a more effective drama. Although I'll still watch it and enjoy it for what it is. Excellent and helpful review.

You know what makes it even shittier… some of these concubines were buried alive. Yeah. They weren’t even given a quick death but suffered for hours and days. (It’s not even just limited to Ming Dynasty either, some other dynasties did too - IIRC early Qing practiced it as well.) The more you know…

It was pretty routine practice throughout Chinese history, unfortunately. Abahai of the Later Jin was the last to have it done as I recall, though in her case it's believed to have been done to keep her out of politics

OMG!… I’m English/Caribbean been watching C-dramas around 4 years yr reviews literally “crack-me-up!”🤣🤣Re watched ‘Royal Feast’ for the 2nd time… (school mid term break) often I do my own historical research when I don’t understand something such as real life characters, dynasties, who did what/when/how… Yr so right about accuracies most dramas I guess are done to aesthetically please the audience…lucky for me by the time I get to watch reviews I’ve seen the drama… BTW ❤yr costume.. although it’s nice it’s a little off and not in exactly in keeping with yr historical setting…🤣🤣bad joke!😂

I really recommend that you watch the one on KZbin because that one has better subs than the other sources I've seen, for some reason, they locked the last few episodes, but they are unlocking them again. I think it has to do with correcting the English subs.

What I got from your review- the good is all about the aesthetic parts of the drama, while the bad are the story/plot and acting. I watched a bit of the drama, out of curiosity because I was pretty intrigued by the trailers earlier. Gotta agree on your points. I would say, this drama is more on the feast for the eyes, not really food for the soul. I actually like the color grading (lol), and the whole aesthetics of the drama (the set, costumes, styling..) it succeeded in pulling me into the ancient/ dynasty feels. And, the food & cooking scenes look yummylicious, haha. But, I couldn't really get myself into the story. I think it's not very well written & certain parts don't make any sense, and another story of FL getting away with anything just because "I'm the FL"...

I was so done with Wu Jin Yan's acting when I saw a scene in trailer (where she bows down wearing the red costume probably coronation costume). Her facial expression when she bows down makes me speechless. And now watching her performance in every single episode still makes me feel the same. I just watch this drama only for the cooking parts.

Reviews are opinion and maybe differs from viewers. I bet some of the critics may not be good actors. They'll perhaps endure criticism from their fellow critics.

Don't worry AvenueX! I thought the same too when I saw Wu JingYan's acting after she got famous from Yan Xi Palace... In this drama, her facial expression literally always looked all immersed in the feeling of triumphant... Like she is at the top of the world or something and it bothered me a lot!!!

the korean drama you mentionned is "jewel of the palace:dae jang geum" that was the first asian drama i watched when i was merely 14 years old,i am now 27 years old and that drama is still one of my favourite if not my favourite drama ever,give it a shot if you haven't yet that drama is pure gold!

I am so glad I didn’t see your impression prior to watching the Royal Feast. You are so much more intelligent and knowable than us out here. I had never seen any Chinese Drama feature , nor knew anything about the Culture of history, food etc. This series introduce to me so much of just Chinese life set in another century. I found myself laughing , actually laughing at the interactions between the 2 lovers, when they were falling in love. As for their acting , since I never had seen them before , I had nothing to compare or measure the strength of their parts. Look at how well received it was received by many even out side China ( like me) . I will continue to watch selected dramas …… if only to enjoy the story line , and escape the reality of our times. I can watching later , what your opinions are on these dramas, even though , I will make up my own unintelligible opinion.

Tbh the main reason I love this drama is precisely bc it feels like YXP fanfiction 😆😆 I am enjoying it so much because I'm not really taking it seriously or judging it as an independent drama. It's more like, I really loved YXP and this one is serving so many similar vibes and I'm eating it all up 😆✌️

This is how I exactly feel about this! I loved Yanxi Palace, especially the relationship between Wei Ying Luo and Fu Heng. How their relationship ended so sadly really effected me to this day. This show feels like an alternate reality of the Yanxi Palace storyline.

I was excited about this drama because I love Yanxi Palace. Yet this drama's many problems are big in size and too glaring to ignore. Like you said, the acting of the leads is problematic. Wu Jin Yan, like you said, has a set of expressions and her smirks bother me a lot in this drama. And then the make up/ wardrobe/ filter all made people look less attractive. The biggest problem though is the story. There is no tension and somehow I don't care for any of characters even after watching close to the 10th episodes.

When you said "fanfic" it all made sense to me. You are right. I started watching it but the FL character was so off to me. Like yeah, you know the rules and can get out of situations with your words, but surely you cannot be so smug about it and show it? (Unless there is a plot twist and this is one of those dramas where the FL is actually trapped in a videogame or something and knows everything already 🙄) I'm only on the first episodes, so haven't seen much of Xu Kai's character, yet. I'll probably keep watching a little bit more, but I'm not anxiously waiting for the next episode nor do I have the urge to binge watch, like with other dramas.

100% agree with the acting skills of the two main leads. Especially Wu Jin Yan. I've watch her before in other dramas where she is playing the leading lady, and after the 2nd one I started asking ... who took her out of supporting roles & thought she was experienced enough to play a Main Leading Role, who's her backing🤔 ? As for the young man .. well.. I've only seen him in *Story of YanXi Palace which really didn't focus on the acting honestly.... but more of the Story. Xu Kai is still rly young but an amazing actor from what I’ve seen. I know Ancient Love Poetry isn’t the type of drama for everyone but his emotional scenes I thought were great. He can give that cold unbothered poker face but can also crack that expression to a heart warming one in different situations. I haven’t seen military Academy but if people say his acting is great there then maybe I’ll give it a try

Yes as I feel based off trailer, xu Kay's role is like trophy male lead. He's just there, its more about the lady fight but as you pointed out too, the main female lead has the same linear face and acting. It might have suited yanxi palace character but not in Royal Feast.

I do like this drama. It's wholesome light and entertaining. it has less intrigues, jealousy and backstabbing unlike the Story of Yanxi Palace and Ruyi's Love in the Palace. The actors in this drama played their character as what the script and the director told them to do. Entertainment is the purpose of the drama not emotional stress.

Actually I've got two questions. 1 - did medieval chefs really not cover their heads while cooking?! What if one hair from their elaborate hair-does fall down into the Emperor's plate? 2 - what did other people in the palace eat, and who cooked for them? Did all the servants have to prerare food for themselves? After The Serenade of Peaceful Joy where we were able to see the life of the palace in all its grandour and misery (including the everyday chores of made servants and little boys and girls serving the princess) I found the focus of this new drama once too narrow.

I was so looking forward to this drama (love chinese historical dramas) but this was so disappointing I totally agree with your assessment so far. As someone relatively new to Chinese Dramas (but scooping them us as quickly as I can) I find it bizaree they don't let the actors use their own voices - weird. The only exception I've come across is Autumn Ballard the male lead's voice is great (story is cute too). I find your views not only insightful but really educational, again new the Chinese Drama and history your information is great I'm learning such a lot, many thanks.

Its not that weird regarding the voice dubbing and somehow logical since China is big BIG and those actors/actress came from many places so many of them have accent/dialect that is still visible even after they tried to contain it thats why some dramas decide to just dubbed it n somehow it becomes a trend to just dub all voices 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

People during the ancient Chinese are totally different from the current Chinese. History is history you may not accept it's reality but you can't re-write history to conform your beliefs or expectations. It is what it is. I believed that people involved in the production of this drama made an intensive research about the Ming dynasty, the emperor, their wives, concubines and the regular people.

I think a lot of scenes were cut out and the storylines did not make sense. Suddenly one of the chefs foot got injured and she claims she was being ostracised? I thought I missed a scene or something. WJY's acting was so bad, she was giving that weird smile in every single scene.

I think one of the biggest flaws of this drama is the editing. I think that some episodes feel like there are missing scenes in between that a lot of the characters' motivations and actions get lost, and that's why some things don't make sense. The brown filter is so ugly that I wish they had used a cyan filter with pops of red instead. The sepia look makes everyone look sick. But anyway, so far, I'm enjoying this mindless drama. Sometimes, I just want to watch something not super complicated or anything to pass the time, and this one just fits my needs atm. Thank you for the review.

I'm not surprised. Avenue X didn't like yanxi palace due to the female lead's ability to get away with actions that could get one killed and knowing exactly how other characters will respond in advance. It's called the Mary Sue trope. I don't agree that the female lead was untouchable as she was punished with lashes and hand injured and in house arrested before becoming a chef and and and. I agree the plot makes absolutely no sense as one second she is in the palace with a false identity with the knowledge of the xukai's mother and an investigation by imperial staff still doesn't find out she has a false identity. The writer also left opportunities lose like someone being held accountable for the death of the sister of xukai's wife. Plot twists don't make sense at all.

I have watched 7 episodes so far and I am dropping it because it's a cooking show with barely any plot, wooden characters and bad acting and directing. Yes, it's a fanfic of Yanxi palace (and that drama was already a fantasy). And I totally agree, the styling of the female characters is unflattering and making them look older (Wu Jin Yan looks even older than her age). But I must say, YOU look very dashing in this attire!

I think it's interesting enough to watch many different dishes, which were served at the court during Ming Dynasty. And also, even if it's famous, Chinese people love to eat, I doubt, that many intl. viewers know well, how sophisticated Chinese culinary culture is. So, I enjoyed all those dishes. My problem is... that the drama doesn't really focus on the food or dishes. I expected that every episode has one or two interesting dishes, which look yummy AND move the story... (that's the basic premise of such drama/comic series, right?)

I just finished watching Royal Feast on KZbin. It was a great story, but again, they rewrote history. I finished it, because the story was interesting. However, while both main characters were somewhat acted well, I never felt any emotional attraction between the two. May be an unpopular opinion, but the two were not an ideal pairing to me. I understand the appeal of giving the two actors a good ending to make fans happy.

Avenue X, you are quite correct about the FL and the way she is dissociated from her character. A crucial scene is where the Wu Jinyan, reveals her 'adoration' for the ML. She says with no change of expression..."I adore!". If I hadn't been paying attention of the subtitles, I would have missed this critical point in the plot. In fact, I find myself almost yawning waiting for the scenes between the FL and ML to finish. Then we can get back to the infinitely more interesting scenes between the minor roles. Before this I would have watched Xu Kai read the phone book! However, his acting in this dud, is tedious!!

I first was kinda excited once I saw who the lead actors were but that excitement died down within the first episode. The female lead character (and her acting) is the biggest problem for me, like she just does whatever she wants although she actually is still at the bottom lol she's basically a Mary Sue (just like in Yanxi Palace) and she also isn't distinguishable from the female lead in Yanxi Palace. The highlight for me was the crown prince though lol he seemed so nice and naive that I felt really bad for him :/

Thank-you!!! I could not bring myself to watch it. Loved Yanxi, but then I saw Wu Jiyuan (sp?) In another drama and was completely turned off. So much so, that if I see her as a cast member in a drama, I will avoid it. Xu Kai on the other hand, well, kinda like the dubbed voices that are over used.....pls do not kill me!!!! But that is personal taste, so yea. 😂

Well I love Avenue X’s reviews and I initially decided to not to watch it because of the review. I changed my mind and watched Royal Feast. I really liked this drama. So parts are slow, the editing could have been much better and I wished they spent more time in the romance. But over all I enjoyed it and I was able to get the subtle twists. Many times the characters spoke volumes. Sword and Brocade didn’t get a good review either and I enjoyed it!

I seriously felt that you pointed out some really good reason I have watched till ep 10 but seriously wu Jin yang's face literally shows no emotion...tho i liked their paring together but I seriously can't sit through a 40ep drama with no plot ...tho i know I might like the future plot.

Erqing was evil. I think for her to really be forgiven, the subplot of her torturing Fuheng's maid and selling her into prostitution would have to be retconned. That plus trying to pass off her son as the Emperor's and leading the Empress to commit suicide.

Totally enjoying Royal Feast. Love that it’s a light an easy drama and I can enjoy watching some delicious food being made. I just started Yanxi Palace and totally enjoying that as well. Of course a lot of Chinese dramas I sit back and smile cause they’re a bit ridiculous at times. I find myself talking to the screen or laughing out loud on many occasions. Great entertainment! If I think the writer is stretching too far into the ridiculous I drop the drama. I can see a lot of crazy things that are happening in Royal Feast and right away I put it in the fantasy category. I’m still enjoying it cause after all, it’s the escape I’m looking for. When I need something produced well with a serious story I would turn to people like you who can point me in the right direction for a good drama. If you have any suggestions on a good costume drama, please send it my way. On a serious note however, I try to research a lot of the rich Chinese history introduced in the costume dramas and enjoy a good production when it’s presented. Oh Avenuex, I had the same thought the script writer isn't educated when I watched ep 1 of Royal Feast, yep only 1 ep and I dropped it not gonna continue.. the way the 2nd prince addresses the crown prince as "da ge" is totally wrong , should be "Huang xiong" or "tai zi dianxia"... Da Ge is for commoner oh my gosh. The 2nd thing is the female lead, you are so true, her acting is ewww for me, she doesn't have the quality as the female lead.
