Really enjoyed your video. A couple of years ago I decided to go full frame and bought into Sony. After struggling with the menu system, the ergonomics, the flip out screen that doesn’t offer enough to make it worth while and is almost useless in bright sunlight, the auto focus system that seems to work on the principle that close enough is good enough. I had enough and am in the process of selling all my Sony gear. I found a nearly new S5 with the 50mm and 20-60mm lenses on eBay. I know the camera is not perfect. But it feels right when I hold it, it focuses where I want it to and the colour science has got to be amongst the best of any camera brand. I am enjoying photography once more.😊

This camera (OG S5) seems to have a 16bit sensor readout mode since the VLOG profile can see all 16+ stops of dynamic range which is impressive but of course the noise counters that back to 12. Would you be able to explain what brings you to the full frame world for cinematic filming (s5) vs the apsc world (x-t3)? Is it less traditionally cinematic to go full frame as far as the characteristics of the image (lenses, background blur, etc)? Or would you consider that a misunderstanding of how to shoot on these two types of sensors? Can you essentially make either look like a traditional, Arri-type image depending on lens choice, or is apsc providing something closer to traditional cinema look? Setting budget aside for a second, at the $1k price point, with the goal of having a great hybrid option that you could also make cinematic short films on, would you suggest reaching back to something like the X-T3 or looking ahead to full frame like with the S5?
@AveryCaudill6 ай бұрын
Yeah the second bit is more accurate to the best of my understanding, lens choice and aperture especially will make the difference. I like full frame for the low light and overall image quality but find myself shooting in apsc mode usually anyway to get better rolling shutter performance. To be honest I’d go for an s5 and manual lenses! Either are amazing though

I agree, I use Panasonic camera since a long time and the S5 has much nicer rendering than the S5II with most profiles. The S5II looks very plastic with very bad fine details rendering. V-Log is OK on the S5II, but not exactly the same than the S5, it has slightly less details but more agressive digital sharpness. I don't know if it's because of PDAF because the GH6 also has weird details compared to the GH5 or the G9. I think it's because of the new engine developed with Leica. For me they killed the fantastic image quality than Lumix had before.

I feel like the only group of people who notice the auto focus deficiency are professional videographers! People who watch the content presented are too distracted by the story and the image to notice the nuances of the lack of quick auto focus. So Don't worry about it too much :) By the way thank you for a great video. I love the cinematic crop and to the picture.

@AveryCaudill Жыл бұрын
Definitely! There are cheaper options as well but it’s a camera you could grow into and use for a long time
@NowyKurs8 ай бұрын
Sure. it's a good camera. Definitely grate for photography and also for video. But to be honest, I still prefer to use my GH5 with spedbooster than S5, especially when I do my own creative stuff. 6K HLG 200 bit H265 just can't be beaten especially when it comes to organic look.

I agree the GH5 in 6K Open Gate has one of the best image I have seen. I think if you like this look, you could like the S1H or S1 6K Open Gate, it looks very similar. However the S5 with sharpness at -5 or 0 in V-log is pretty close. The S5II however is a big disappointement for video quality.

@AveryCaudill Жыл бұрын
In certain modes, I forget which though sorry, it’s never been an issue for me
I have both, I only use the S5II when I need to slowly walk with the camera while recording. The S5 has much better image quality than the S5II with most profiles.
@NkProdTV Жыл бұрын
I’ve seen a few comments claiming the same thing regarding the S5II vs the S5 image quality. I have the S5 and was wondering if I should skip the S5II and save a little more for the S5IIX? I’m also not a fan of how you need an upgrade key for the S5ii while the S5 comes with it out of the box…
@aiseurnae5976 Жыл бұрын
@@NkProdTV The S5II and the S5IIX have the same image quality, you have more recording option like Prores or All-i but it doesn't remove the bad details rendering. If you don't need a very fast AF, I think the S5 is the better camera. However I think you should test the S5II, some people don't see a big difference between the S5 and S5II video quality.

Brother, I'm seriously considering buying a S5 for portraits, lifestyle and some events where lightning may be poor. How's the camera holding like for someone doing 85% photos and 15% videos for social media?

Honestly any camera made in the last 5 years is probably up to the task! Haha! Just depends on your preferences, but I’m sure the s5 is capable

Would you recommend this over a Sony A6700 for cinematic? Struggling between the two.. aware Sony is APS-C
@AveryCaudill Жыл бұрын
I’ve never used one, but the lumix is my top choice if you don’t need Sony autofocus
@wkghrs Жыл бұрын
Someone who knows what they're doing can get cinematic images out of both. The A6700's advantage is having comparable image quality to an S5 in a smaller size and excellent autofocus. The S5 is much easier to use, has better monitor/EVF, has dual card slots, never overheats. They're built like tanks. Pro work- S5 no question. Longevity - S5. Portability - A6700.
