In this video: communications during an IFR arrival from cruising level until parked at the gate.
By watching this video you will learn the basic phraseology that's being used during an IFR arrival while flying an airliner from A to B. Also a quick look at the phraseology that's being used during an emergency situation. Remember, this is an example flight in Europe. The phraseology might be slightly different in your country/continent.

Quick questions: Who would you ask to descend if there wasn't approach controller on the server? Also, if there wasn't a ground controller then would you taxi to a gate by yourself? Lastly, on long flights, there usually isn't atc all the way so when do you contact approach? thanks, a pilot getting ready for 1st flight
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 9 жыл бұрын
Wuyou Xie Nobody, you just start the descent yourself as soon as you reach your top of descend. Same for the ground situation, yes you taxi to a gate yourself. The next controller will notify you when to contact him, or you can check via Vatspy or Servinfo where active controllers are and contact them accordingly.

It means to descend to Flight Level 80, that's an altitude. It's basically 8000 feet using the standard pressurre setting of 1013 hectopascals.

These videos and the q&a in the comments have been very helpful. One question; I take off IFR in a location where there is no active ATC. Do I squawk 2200 until first contact and ask for clearance upon first contact?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, you just squawk 2200 until first contact. When you contact ATC, you will usually not receive any flight plan clearance anymore, you will just receive a squawk code ;)

So when Warsaw radar said, "SKAVI 1B arrival" I understand that it's the STAR. But does that mean the ATC chooses the STAR for you, or do you have to choose your STAR in advance before even taking off?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 8 жыл бұрын
+MrEdwardGaming Yes they choose the STAR for you, although in most cases you can already judge which STAR you get based on the last waypoint on your flight plan. Some waypoints can have multiple STARS for example, in that case you need to wait for ATC to tell you which STAR you are supposed to fly ;)

But a STAR can also be part of the initial flight plan, right? Meaning, you could choose it when you file, as long as it gets approved. Am I correct? If that's the case, can the ATC change your STAR anyway once you are getting close? Thanks

Hello, A question. I do not own any payware yet, and I am preparing my first flight, but as I do not have any good displays, how would I know all the waypoints in the air, while my display is not showing it. Thanks for any responses
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 9 жыл бұрын
That's going to be hard without having a payware addon with a FMC using an up-to-date AIRAC cycle. But for your first flight I wouldn't even suggest to fly IFR like that. It's best to start slow with some easy VFR flights for example. aviationpro.nl/vatsim/tips-tricks/#new%20pilots

Nice video! I just started flying on vatsim but i encountered a problem. From gate to cruise is going fine. But then i would conact London_twr, when reaching T/D and they gave me a handsoff to unicom and said no further atc information available. For the rest of the flight they would not contact me anymore?! How do i make clear i want to land at an airport?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! TWR is not controlling the airspace all the way through your T/D. Only CTR or APP do that, so TWR could not provide ATC over there and sent you back to UNICOM. Best moment to contact TWR (if TWR is the only controller online) is when you are established on the ILS.

@AviationPro

If you can't hear them properly you should tell them! Then they can take care of it. Other ways to improve the quality is by wearing a headset with just the ATC communications coming through and by disabling VHF simulation if that is possible with your pilot client.

I love your videos AviationPro and i had a question. Do you always have to request for descent when you are with a centre frequency or will atc give you descent instructions later on during your flight? Also i dont know if you use the Quality Wings 757 but how do you descend to a given altitude by atc with VNAV turned on and there is set altitiudes in the FMC.

PunOne thanks
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks! It depends a bit, sometimes ATC will already clear you to a lower altitude, or ATC says 'when ready, descent to FL...' which means that you start your descent at your T/D, whenever that is. If you reach your T/D within like 2 minutes, and you did not receive a descent clearance yet, you indeed have to ask for it yourself. You can still use VNAV, but just put in the altitude the controller gave you in the MCP. VNAV will automatically stop at that altitude. If you can descend further, you put the new lower altitude in the MCP, push the Altitude select knob, and VNAV will continue descent again.

I am asking about streaming in respect of the Pilot Edge air traffic control utility? Is streaming involved with regard to Pilot Edge use? Does Pilot Edge have a fully functional ACARS? Would you see visually other traffic on your computer monitor/ screen and on your airplane's TACAS vsi instrument when on or using Pilot Edge? I ask if streaming is involved as there must be some kind of screen capture software working on all participants computers to record each airplane's position on the built-in database map of the flight simulator program that it may be displayed to other aircraft traffic within the Pilot Edge air traffic control system. How is other traffic determined and hence displayed to participant traffic on Pilot Edge if streaming is not involved?

Question: I have heard it said many times to write it down, but as fast as they speak is it possible to write it all down and then repeat back? How much time do we have before we have to acknowledge?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 9 ай бұрын
There's not much time I'm afraid, that's why it's important to visit small, not-busy airports first and to put something in the remarks like 'new pilot' so they know you will take a bit longer. Also during the VATSIM First Wings events the controllers allow more time for everything. Regarding the writing down: just write down keywords and use abbreviations wherever possible, it's impossible to write everything down 'live' what they say.

What does QNH mean?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 9 жыл бұрын
It's a so called Q code which represents the barometric pressure that's currently present. So a QNH 1013 means that the barometric pressure is currently 1013 hectopascals, and you have to enter this into your altimeters in order for them to display the correct altitude.

I have a doubt.As ATC,once you have cleared a traffic a VOR/DME Approach,don't you have to tell him to report with the rwy in sight? Because the VOR/DME isn't a high precission aproach.
@aviationpro313
@aviationpro313 10 жыл бұрын
It's not a requirement since you will have to continue visual after the minimums anyway. If you don't have the runway in sight by then you should execute a go-around. If the runway is in sight early in the approach already (like in this video) you could tell ATC that you have the field in sight and that you would like to continue a visual approach. Also, when ATC asks you to report runway in sight you will also have to comply with that of course! :)
@gricket2417

Roger! I asked because a use to fly & control on IVAO and trainers told me that I have to say to report rwy in sight with VOR/DME or Visual app.But of course,if the weather is good and you see the rwy at the start of the app,then it's not necessary,I understand jaja. PD: I recommend you to fly to Spain.On VATSIM there's no much control but some airports are really great like LEPA or LEBB jaja

What do you do if you don't have the star or sid that they give you?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 7 жыл бұрын
You should have the SID or STAR they give you. It either means you do not have up-to-date charts or you have outdated AIRAC data, it's your own responsibility to update those. If you can't, inform ATC that you need to fly the old SID or STAR.

OK so i have a question that couldnt be answered on the vatsim forums. Im fairly new to flying on Vatsim with the PMDG 737 and one of my main concerns is being given a different arrival approach than i anticipated, so with that being said when exactly should i input the arrival/star into my FMC? or how would i change the arrival rnway if i already have inputted it into the FMC?
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 7 жыл бұрын
This is just what I personally do: I ALWAYS plan an arrival procedure based on what runway I expect to be active. This will allow me to calculate a more accurate time of arrival, more accurate fuel consumption calculation, and a more accurate top of descent. That's because in most cases, any approach procedure will always take you some more time and miles before you land on the runway. Take a good look at the weather to see which runway is likely to be active. And if you need to change the approach last-minute: no problem: just select a new STAR and approach in the FMC, review the missed approach procedure, minimums and vREF etc. ATC will most likely give you your landing runway when providing a descent clearance, or at least in the early phase of your descent, so you should have plenty of time to change if necessary.

What if the case is that you have a add on plane and it randomly sets a failure. (Example Random Engine Fire without setting a failure)
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 7 жыл бұрын
Well I would turn that off first of all, if you can't, you just need to declare an emergency, but be prepared to log off the VATSIM network if the controller doesn't fancy handling an emergency during a busy event for example. On a non-event night there's a better chance, but when the airport is overloaded with traffic it is not always fun for the controller to have to deal with such situations while dealing with things like text pilots etc.
