That holiday has been problematic. I bought it at a nursery I never had used before. But it looked healthy then. It’s probably user error. 😂

Like your gem with bad hair, I have a wurtz that was going strong the I sprayed it with lemon soap to try to stop lace fly. The soap was organic and diluted. Most the leaves became soft and wilted and eventually died. It's now coming back with water sprouts and new growth and the original branches are dying distal to the new growth. The problem is I can't picture where it's going. The trunk hasn't grown since the "soaping" about 1/2 year ago.

I made similar error, Vaseline on trunk to stop ants, well it's a good way to kill young avos, two eventually wilted, digging up, roots mostly dead, the three handing on I'm painting that part of the trunk with diluted Garden Phos so far so good, although this area of the trunks has not grown, will see what happens this spring. Take away for us is that avos are VERY sensitive. Beware of using stuff on them.

Have you tried watering off the tree? I'm not sure the lemon soap mix was a good Idea.

To treat lace bugs you have to go to either Home Depot or Lowes and get bioadvance “Fruit, citrus and vegetable control.” Make sure you get the season long one so one treatment a year…

My Bacon, has been the best, upright and every year productive. Holiday uneffected by 114 heat holding 12 fruits on this 2 year in the ground upright #15. My Pinkerton, like one of your trees developed a new leader that grew over 8 feet this year, a #15 planted a year ago, holding 5 fruits.

@@ziiman l'm 12 miles east of San Diego, typical summer can have some 100 to 110, the 114 was a record. I'm also fortunate as my trees are on an east facing slope, and get shaded in the summer after 4 or so, by trees, and neighbors house. Even so, I've lost 6 or 7 young trees for various reasons, I'm on my fourth Reed which finally looks like it will make it.✌

I had two gems. Lost one recently. The other is a wild grower as you point out. Never fruited in 3 years. I need your help. What is best variety for durability in this area? I'm in Murrieta near the 15.

In Murrieta everything should do ok. The soil and water is the most important. Some shade when the trees are young

Often what is not said is about productivity, my 4 year old Hass had 70 fruits last year, this year only one. Same thing with a friends two mature Hass in San Diego, no fruit this year. I don't let my trees"grow wild" I often pinch, prun to keep the shape I'm seeking. Here near Santee my strongest are Pinkerton, Fuerte, Bacon, Ettinger, and Hass...least are Gwen, Sharwil, Jim, and Reed. Many are still young and untested over time. Good luck!

They won’t be actual GEM if grown from seed. It will be partially Gem. Just like kids have some characteristics of each parent. The tree won’t fruit for 5-10 years.

@@TheElsinoreGardener Sorry to hear about your Holiday. Holiday doesnt seem to be strong plant when buying from HD. I bought a 15 gallon Holiday from Home Depot. When I repotted to 25 gallon pot, many roots fell off. 6 months later it is finally making a rebound. I used Organicide Plant Doctor and Ithink that did the trick to since the plant from nursery was growing in bad soil.

Is it normal for avocado to lose 90% of its leaves and still be alive? All the leaves is browning and dropping.. 😞

They can lose their leaves, but should be pushing new growth also.

It lost all its leaves 😕 but there’s some new growth.. I read that it might be excessive salt from the watering.. but at the same time I’m worry it being root rots.

Careful fertilizing..I used to use liquid fish fertilizer and it leaf burned my avocado trees in containers..now I use dry granule.
