Super interesting topic. Here., in Dutch kickboxing gyms and even during bouts you see a lot of people favoring /resorting to the shell as if it's some kind of 'necessity', so these tactics definitely help.

This episode is golden! As a bigger guy in the group on the intermediate level, I constantly match with more advanced-level guys with a lower weight class in sparring. What always ends up happening is that they tend to throw much higher volume and occupy space, pressuring me to shell up. Now checking against this list, I see that I should use more footwork, roll with the punches more to create natural counters opportunities, or throw more straights to occupy the space first (to avoid being seen as a bully, I never felt comfortable doing that before). Thanks, Joseph, for this episode. I couldn't have found the solution so quickly without it.

Joe, Thanks for everything you have done for the sport. I started training Muay Thai/DKB almost one year ago and only recently found out about your materials thru my coach. Your teaching skills, and focus on fundamentals have helped me get past a plateau in training. Also enjoy watching your Glory fights against much more experienced opponents.

Perfect timing for me to be watching this vid. Had a sparring session after a two week vacation and just could not get into it. Just kept being stuck in the shell the whole time. Thanks Joe, you've definitely got the best educational KZbin channel on kickboxing!

Thank you Bazooka Joe. Covering up only “works” in boxing IMO

It doesn't work in boxing either. Joe is right, this is last resort when you're about to get knocked out. Footwork critical in every aspect of combat sports to try to minimize losing or just completely getting knocked out.

If caught in the shell, when the right time to counter?, usually when i counter after 1-2 punches come,i still eat the punches, how to turn the table? thank you coach 😁

Base on my experience slipping punches will be a good idea try to be constant active in movement while inside it takes time to get the perfect timing but you'll be there in no time

ONE MORE STRATEGY: Use your Pivots. Rear leg pivots to get out. Or Windshield Wiper movements.
