I admit I did a terrible thing in Thailand. That is, I did nothing. I was somewhat burnt out from the first 10 months of mostly slow travel, and I just needed to chill and write and recharge. Not one tourist thing. I went out every evening to sit and take notes at the coffee house across from the resort. Hit the grocery store. Took a walk most days. Eight weeks. It was lovely. And necessary. And I'll be back again when I've learned to better regulate my travel schedule/pace, and see some things. I have also learned this first full year of travel that though I love being places, I hate travel days. I get zen for them because I have to, but I hate them.

Travel days are always exhausting!! We spent two months in Split, Croatia for the same reason. 😁

I think when most people start traveling full-time, they try to go to as many places as possible. But after awhile, it gets old to always be packing/unpacking and spending too much time in airports or train stations. I tried monthly stays, but after a year, even that got to be too much. Now I'm looking at spending 2-3 months in one country, alternating with 3-4 months at home in the US, twice a year. What helps a lot is establishing a daily habit you can do anywhere, like a long walk or a beer/wine in the afternoon!

Everyone overestimates how much they can do in a year, and underestimates what they can do over ten years. We're not traveling right now, but when we do I hope we can take the long view.

We did fast last year, 5days, 5 days, 2 days, 4 days, 5 days. We came to the conclusion, Oh hell no!! One of us suffered more, but not so silently 😮😂. So absolutely no more fast travel, unless unavoidable, or family visit requires it. This video is so much needed, to be talked about more, while traveling don't overdo your timing of things too tightly. When you get burned out, you begin to get a negative look on traveling. Don't sour something you want to do, and enjoy, by overscheduling your selves.

We’re on a 2 month schedule in Europe. Started 9 days in Krakow, 3 days Bratislava, 3 Days Budapest, 3days Vienna, 2 days Salzburg, 3 days Dresden. On to Wurzburg Germany for one month. Heading Paris for 4 nights. That will happen after a one week rest in Wurzburg. We finish up with 3 days in the French Alsace region and 3 days in Cochem. Finally flying home first few days in Oct. All in country travel by train and car rental when in Germany.

Great video! I think Brian hit on one key element is that each individual needs to feel comfortable to get out and do things alone. As much as Christian and I love to be together, we need our space. Whether I wake up early and go for coffee or she goes on a walk by herself. Plus, it helps us find new things to talk about. I’m not a very good work husband… 😅

Everything so relatable to me. After 2 years of slow travel and watching you guys for the same amount of time, I feel like my experiences mirrors you guys. Like y’all, I love a city that’s walkable with good walk/bike paths, preferably along a waterfront. As for working out, I highly suggest fitness bands and body weight exercises in your apartment. I’ve even got a thin foldable yoga mat that I pack in my carryon. I know how crucial space is in your carryon, but I manage to fit it in. I try to follow good weather and only have gym shorts and tee shirts mostly. After 2 weeks on the European side of Istanbul, I’m now on the Asian side in Kadikoy and loving the riverside, flat walking. It’s a journey. Cheers!

Really enjoyed this video. We have been on the road for 10 months. We’re from Australia and have been spending most of the time in Europe, mainly long stays. Currently in Agadir in Morocco before travelling to 9 different locations in Morocco for five weeks, so fast travel on this occasion. I’ve found it hard doing the longer stays in all of the locations we chose. So, totally agree that choice of location is paramount. I’d prefer to do what you are experimenting at the moment by going home approx 4 times a year, but too costly for us to travel from Australia.
@BrianandCarrie27 күн бұрын
We have met a few Assies that have said the same. Australia is further away than we all realize. 😁 Going home more than once or twice a year is difficult and expensive. Thank you for watching and safe travels!! 🍻

Very Timely topic for me. I’m on week seven of a five month trip through western Europe slow traveling in about one city every 2 to 3 weeks. And I’m a little tired and I’ve also been housesitting about 60% of the time so far for accommodations. I’m headed out to my final UK housesit and then two months paying for lodging before another housesit IN December. Overall it’s a lot of fun but I’m sure this is still the honeymoon phase. I expect to slow travel for about 2 years…. But who knows. I’m also a solo traveler which means I can change my mind or direction without any discussion 🥹🤷🏾♀️. Thanks for your videos. Love the content.

My wife and I are about to start our first 4-month trip starting Dec 1 (Algarve, Spain, Turkey, Croatia) before returning to Arizona.....thanks to your experiences and amazingly informative videos! One thing that we're not sure about yet is......whether this type of "slow travel" may work with another couple - i.e. two couples who are close friends. My thought is that while we would NOT plan to be tied at the hip together, it would surely be pretty awesome to have two guys and two gals seeing SOME of the sights and spending SOME of the days together. My thought is that this may be conducive to helping avoid boredom for the longer stays. Have you considered this option, or do you seldom get bored with just the two of you?

Question on the Away bags. We’re trying to decide between the Away and a backpack style like Tom Bihn. Have you found that you needed to carry your bags for a long ways instead of rolling them (like lots of stairs or cobblestone roads)?
@BrianandCarrie2 ай бұрын
Not really, we walk with our bags through airports more than on the streets. We prefer not having weight on our backs for long periods of time. There are occasions that having a backpack would be nice but it's really personal preference.

We have been mixing it up in Europe in a motorhome with putting it in storage and traveling Asia,Aus etc. The motorhome is so cost effective and gives you the home feeling.. with it being cost effective it stretches the budget for bigger adventure.. if you would like more info on this I would be happy to supply. For me, overseas travel has always been balancing out how many days or weeks in one place over another place. If I'm going to a totally new place within my 6-12 week travel stretch, then I usually only book the new places for around 3-4 nights to try them out. That way if I don't like the place, I can leave within a reasonable amount of time. One example was when I decided to take off to Jakarta back in 2018, I think it was. I have a regular hotel in Singapore, so I left part of my luggage there in storage, and then took off to Jakarta for 3 nights and tried it out and then back to Singapore for about a week and back to the same hotel. When I arrived back to Singapore, my stored luggage had already been sent to my new room. I've been going to S.E. Asia regularly since the late 1990s. I spend the most time in both Bangkok and Singapore as I call them my wind-down/down time zones and then fly to new places usually within the region, but once even as far as Hong Kong for a few days and then back to Singapore as I fly home from Singapore. I do the same on other continents. I wish I had planned more days in Jakarta as I really liked it and way better than when I was on Bali in the late 1990s. For me it's important to schedule wind-down/down-time zones where I can recharge myself before moving on to the next location. And I like those wind-down zones to be in places where I've been many times before as then I have time to go around to see shop keepers, restaurant owners/staff, and other people whom I've made casual connections with over the many years. Then, I move on to the next place. For me, I like making ongoing connections with the locals. But, maybe that's because I've traveled female and solo for so many decades. It's great when I return back to a place and long-time acquaintances greet me back even when I arrive to my hotels, serviced apartments, regular apartments, and/or AirBnbs. Greetings from Los Angeles

Full time travel is not perfect. I remember thinking, we will be able to go anywhere we want. Well reality is that many countries are unaffordable. We would love to do slow travel in the UK, Norway, Finland, Canada, USA, Australia, etc. but these countries eat into our budget too much.
