I love the little drama playing out while Frederick is lamenting, the Pirate King and Ruth are trying desperately to get the sword out of his foot. I don't know why, but the juxtaposition makes me laugh really hard.

Pure sublime silliness, all the funnier when sung very seriously.

I have 5 dvds of Pirates yet I keep watching this technically lacking version. It has become my favorite. The performances of Kline, Routledge, & Smith is so much fun & energetic. The policemen in this version are the best I've seen bar none....imo.

I saw this production in its original summertime run in Central Park, where its loose-limbed kinetic energy fit perfectly. The fact that the show ran out of directorial ideas fairly early on "really didn't matter" because the cast had such expert scene-stealing performers as Patricia Routledge and Kevin Kline, as well as oddball talents like the wonderful Tony Azito (Sergeant of Police). In its brash Americanness -- remember, Pirates was written to have its premiere in New York -- the show actually harked back to the spirit of W. S. Gilbert's "Bab Ballads," which are considerably more anarchic and outrageous than the later G&S collaborations with their superb technical finish. (Like early Jim Henson compared to The Muppet Show!)

I saw this on Broadway with Treat Williams. It is great, and I adore Kevin Kline, but if you don't know the show, you miss a LOT of the lyrics because it's so wordy!

It's a shame the audio on this trio is sub-par. This is my favoriet number in the show.

Christopher Plummer could have handled Captain Von Trapp’s singing. Bill Lee does sound like him!

This Frederic cannot hold his own acting-wise with these legends. He seems bored.
