Oh man, I liked the way you picked the expensive Olympus because you thought it'll give you the best results, but the Minolta smoked that Olympus, but then I knew it would. Minolta always made awesome lenses and meters. The minolta lens used was very sharp with great colour rendition.

The Minolta performed excellently, but that Olympus is a great camera too. I own the exact same model. It probably looked shitty because of the expired film he was using.

The Olympus (mju) stylus series are well proven and well renowned cameras, the expired film definitely will have made a difference but the pics from the Minolta were really nice and those big finder models are everywhere in charity shops in the UK and car boot sales, I might have to grab one next time I see one cheap at one.

Once I found a 35mm viewfinder at a thrift store for $30. It's a little more expensive than what you're shooting, but after a bit of research, it turns out the camera is actually from the mid 40's. It's a rangefinder that would have been used by photojournalists at the time. It was definitely a great find. I'll be selling it here pretty soon for around $100.

Those were some great camera scores. My most recent and (what I think was) my best thrift shop score was a couple of Canon SLRs - an AE-1 Program and a somewhat "well-used" but still functional F-1. The F-1 had a macro 50mm with extension tube installed and the AE-1 just had a body cap. They both needed batteries but they both worked. Total for both was less than $20. About 2 weeks later found a Canon flash and a 50mm 1.8 lens (lens was $5.99 and flash was $2.99). The batteries were more expensive, but they both work. I like the AE-1 better, but the F-1 is cooler looking. Cheers.

@paulkane2391
@paulkane2391 7 жыл бұрын
Flash is a Canon 199A. Oh, and the AE-1 Program came with a power winder (Power Winder D, I think). I'll have to take a pic and send it along. The story continues: Was out at the GW today and found a Canon EOS Rebel XSN Date. Out the door was $19.97. Had a 35-80mm Canon zoom (but no VU-1 or other protective filter over the lens - I'll have to get one - but the lens looked fine). Biggest pain in the butt was finding the CR123A batteries for it. I tried Walmart and Target (pegs but no batteries) - so wound up dropping $22. and change for a set of two batteries (ouch) at Walgreens. The camera still had film in it (I opened up the back to inspect it, and discovered the contents). Some the exposed film will be washed out, but who knows what's already on it. I'm killing the roll, and will see if all it needed was batteries. Wish me luck. Would love to see more thrifted cameras being pressed back into service.

LOVED this video! Appreciate the fact that you developed and showed the photos afterwards (too many vids don't show you and it's just hard to tell if the cam is good based on information about it), and that you had both expired and non-expired film to show (as I often shoot with both and never know what to expect). Great vid. Great finds, too.

It seems like the big finder was a feature on some film cameras. Like, almost as if it was a separate company that sold viewfinders to Minolta and other companies. What makes me think that, is I have a Canon Af-8 with the big finder and a Oly trip xb-3 and it also has the big finder and they look soo similar. Pretty interesting. Another funny thing is, those cameras have a better viewfinder than my Nikon D3300 which was like 1000 times the price of any of my film cameras!

Great video guys! That exact same camera you found, the Stylus Epic Zoom 80, was actually the camera that ignited my passion for photography. It sucks that most charity shops (the UK's version of a thrift store) have caught on to the value of these cameras and usually sell them on ebay for anywhere between £10 to over £100

Minolta is very nice, but The Olympus is sharper, the thing is that here comparing fresh film with expired film, it makes the Minolta seem like it's the better.

I recently bought a bunch of 35mm cameras this year 2017 so far from area thrift stores. I never really stopped shooting film. But i started to see them cheap at the stores for under a dollar or up to 2 bucks. I have that same Minolta i found but havent shot with it. I thought of letting my grandma shoot some pictures with it on her next trip with the seniors. Since the large view finder will be easy for her to see..lol But awesome channel. Beside 35mm, i busted out my first 110 camera my mom got me in 1982. I got film from Lomography.. hoping to finish the roll soon. I also shot super 8mm, but lately prices have been getting kind of expensive, hoping kodak with Ektachrome the prices may get somewhat cheaper. Back in the 90s i could buy kodachrome super 8mm for 10 bucks and 3 dollar develop at walmart. Have you tried regular 8mm yet? I recently was given a kodak brownie 8mm from my uncle, i order 8mm b&w film from B&H so im going to try it out.

Where do you recommend getting your film developed and whats the usual price you pay for developing your roll? Love the video! Make more of the $20 challenge. Really fun to watch.

Looks like the color on the Minolta was better than the Olympus, which was surprising, but then again you said the film was very expired, so perhaps if two rolls of fresh film were used, the results probably would have been similar, because both camera brands are very good.
