EXO's consistent addition of adlibs never disappoints. Newer groups never do adlibs anymore. You rarely hear adlibs in kpop these days and you wont even notice it. They just sing their part and that's it. No vocal layering and harmonies. There will be no EXO-like group in the future if this is the direction kpop is going. Sad.

It's usually because they don't have the vocals to back it up. Most newer groups are now straining just to sing their usual lines and their usually heavily edited. Also I don't there will ever be a EXO like group since this is such a unique group in general not only in terms of vocals.

Exo are great at the harmonies and the adlibs and all but there are still tons of groups that do that too. Starting with really fresh groups like Unis and Illit, over to Kiss of Life or NMixx or Itzy and older groups like Twice and Red Velvet or Loona or even the Wondergirls or Mamamoo. There really are so many that fill their songs with that. It is there but not that much acknowledged. There is hardly a song on the market without any harmonies because it just makes the sound richer. And they are often not heard that much to an untrained ear, or to somebody who has never recorded a song in the studio. Exo have a way of doing it really really well but it is also their style. It is the way their songs are composed. It is part of their music.

@@NeonReactionsPierre I agree, harmonies ain't special at all but there's obviously levels to it. Regarding the adlibs, the difference between the groups you mentioned and EXO is that there's emotion behind their voices and the fact they are difficult to even sing since they sprinkle their riffs,runs and belts all around the song making it unique to them (which I know you said) since no one else can really cover their music to T. This also makes their music timeless and I got into kpop 8 years ago listening to basically every group under the sun. As I grew older I realised that some songs just sound bland after a few listens and really depreciate in value since the song mostly relies on the instrumental rather than the artists vocals/rap itself. Hence why EXO is the only group left I listen to within kpop as their singing really doesn't fall short but impresses me the more I listen over the years as my musical ear improves. It reminds me of the 90s singers. I won't discredit other groups who are also known vocally such as BTOB and Shinee since their music just isn't my cup of tea and that's just subjective because they can SING SING as well.

Yeah, the producer for this is Dem Jointz (also did Obsession) who has the "Incoming!" producer tag you hear at the beginning. He loves to sample vocals from classic or older songs like this.

I wish more people see and appreciate how unique and expressive rappers chanyeol and sehun are. They donot do just a usual style of rap but so versatile and complex in their rapping styles. In every album they bring something new and so different vibe and expressive styles even for different songs of the same album too. Obsession is just one example and they served us.As someone said that rap is not just the fast flow of words. It id art. It is understanding of beat. The vibe of the song. And. Exo rappers have everything. I do listen to others but i dont know exo rappers are just so different.

In the era of obsession, they could hold a concert without D.O and Xiumin who were serving in the military. D.O and Xiumin's parts can be sung by Baekhyun, Suho and Chen. Some interesting information about obsession. I just saw aespa's next level producer's reaction videos. His reactions base on decoding so many details in a song. For obsession he told about triplet method. Some other creative ideas. Also the scene where we can see a head before suho's part that is cut in X form there is light or screen in that X. What he observed that it is a screen type. Which shows that our brain is processing info. And it is actually like we absorb the knowledge and info from other sources which basically are all connected to one system(as famous for world order)and wants everything to be operated as wished. His theories and decoding of certain visuals is insane. I used to watch scientific stuff like that but seeing someone doing it for music videos and that too for exo made me so happy and i am actually so blown away. How detailed their MVs are.Now i admire obsession creators more after listening to hit producers analysis for this song. There is a bull's eye behind sehun sitting at the arrow filled chair. Also we can see so many screens with chess game. Now i must say it is all about power, control and vision perfectly described in this mv.

This album was definitely a showcase of EXO’s versatility. Even with 2 vocalists DO and Xiumin missing, the album still give you something different and beautiful 🥹 Had to listen to the side b tracks a couple times just bec sehun and chanyeol did the rap parts so well. agree with you that they shouldve done a MV for Butterfly Effect but yeah thats the thing with EXO, the best b sides are always title track worthy 💎

Great album review! If you are missing D.O. you could do Don’t Fight the Feeling album review. There’s only 5 songs and Lay is on it (no Suho or Chen, though). You should also listen to the Chinese version of Obsession even if you don’t react to it. It hits maybe even harder than the Korean version. Thanks for all the love to the boys!
