@@Donbros at least it is a solid plastic which is easy to recycle, gmk uses styrofoam which is a horror to recycle and can't be thrown into a plastic recycling bin either. You have to throw it away with regular garbage or find a dedicated recycling bin for styrofoam and polystyrene products which, frankly, are almost impossible to find in most countries. People always assume hard plastics are bad but they are better than styrofoam or part plastic part cardboard products (think a milk karton with a plastic cap) since it is easier to recycle.

I have to buy seperate tray to hold them. If they assume people use all keycaps they are crazy, because they always ship with 40% of optional keycaps for your layout. Those 40 keycaps leftocer has to stay somewhete safe

All of these designs, except for "Los Angeles", are copies from the work of real small-time artists who host their design through larger manufacturers. That Macaw set is GMK Nautilus by Zambumon, the pink set is SA Bliss by Minterly, the Carbon is literally the same name of the set by T0mb3ry, they didn't even change the name. You can buy these sets if you want, these small-time artists aren't going to be suing Akko for royalties, but you gotta acknowledge that this is artistic property of other people - individual artists who aren't part of larger corporations, and that you're buying products that are entirely ripping off of their creative output, with no compensation to the original artists.

Agreed. Taking off my snooty enthusiast hat, haha, I do really like how these sets are priced and widely available. But yeah, there definitely is something to be said about the company just straight up making clones of the designers' works, like you mentioned. Knock offs, no matter how nice or available, exist in all hobbies I suppose. I see something like this as the entry level version of the keyset, 100% great for some people but others might want to upgrade in the future to the real deal once they know the colors work, like the profile, etc.

The only thing thats really tracked to the original artists though are artisan keycaps. Everything else is a standard keycap with a colorpicker for the cap and the legend. Some GMK keycaps even have their art copyrighted bc the "artist" jist copied designs they found and didn't create themselves. GMK keycaps are extremely overpriced for what they are - but the price stays the way it is due to demand. This is how the free market works. GMK will stay overpriced as long as the market demand is high enough that people will still pay the high premium for the keycaps. The demand will stay high enough until the supply is increased. This is a new, cheaper competitor saying "hey, idk why you're charging so much - we can charge half and still make a nice profit so we are going to do just that". Definition of free market. Consumers always win. I do agree that ripping off the artists is a bad thing - and I admit to being ignorant towards which artisan keycaps are actually created by the respective artists (so idk if akko is ripping those off or not) but the rest of the keycaps arent original. Its the same exact same "sections" of keycaps that have their colors and legends inverted on every set.

I’d argue that it’d be more art if it wasn’t so easy to replicate. It just exposes how simple this all is. I mean yeah, it sucks for these guys, but if you wanna survive in business you’re gonna have to have a competitive advantage - like truly make it something artisan that’s hard to copy if you’re gonna charge that much money. But 3x the price with half year wait time is just silly for something so easily available.

Your money, do what fits in your budget. The only thing that kinda makes me hesitate on getting these is that these are copies of the "high end" sets. For example, the blue and purple is based on Mito's laser design and the black and pink is GMK and SA Bliss. I understand why people want to get these. You get the colors without the price tag and wait time. However I'm not sure how I feel about them just copying other people's designs.

Creating a cool color set and only selling to 300 people or whatever in those group buys is nonsense for the people that actually missed it and can never get that color anymore. I'm glad there are companies that are copying those colors and making it available for people that can't be on group buy websites everyday checking so they won't miss buying the set. Maybe that'll teach them to keep re-releasing sets instead of only making one run of the set to 300 people just to keep it exclusive. It's like they don't like making money. So other people will make money off of their bad business practices. Plus for me ,pbt version>>> gmk abs version. So I'm glad I have a pbt option.

So the Eva-01 set is inspired by the 1990s anime Neon Genesis Evangeline; it's the color scheme of the MCs Robot. Wish these had passthrough for illumination, a lot of these are really nice, and unlike others are actually reasonably priced.

i got the Laser copy set from akko about 2 weeks ago. the space bar sound just as good as GMK space bar. all the caps are flat. sure, some of the lettering is off a wee bit but only when you start nit picking. for $60 i'll be getting another color wave in the next few months

Welps, you already addressed it in your video that some of these colorways are GMK copies and indeed no one can own colorways. I am all in for the mechanical keyboard hobby reaching mainstream and constant availability but at the same time I cant help but sympathize for those who poured their creative juices to make something look aesthetically pleasing only for some company to copy it and sell it to the mass market. Then again in this case its the consumers who "win" but still the companies profit.
