Just a few points as an energy efficient passive solar home builder since 1981. Does this house face south? The bases for all my solar designs is derived from The Passive Solar Energy Book published in 1979 and still available. A necessary read for all home designers to this day. I would design overhangs to shade the windows in the summer. I personally do not like ICF. It is my preference to use a regular concrete foundation and insulate it on the outside so the thermal mass is kept inside the house. On some previous designs I've put the electrical boxesl in the concrete walls using conduit to later fish the wires and then plastered the concrete afterward. With the foundation insulated on the outside it runs in plane with the exterior insulation applied to the framed walls. Great work. Photograph the hidden nailing for the inspector later

Sealing an ICF is a farce to tack some extra money on. The only way to to seal concrete is directly to concrete. You sealed the insulation, what does that do for condensation behind the insulation? Torch n Stick applications. Torch membrane straight to primed concrete, following day heat your membrane and Stick you insulation to the membrane. You want the grooved insulation with your gaps running up and down so that in the event water gets behind, it drains out. Weeping tile at the bottom of the foundation goes a long way as well. Peel and sticking insulation is doing nothing, the dirt is holding it in place, you could probably peel it off with 2 fingers.

If you read the back of any other sheet of ply wood or osb. It has arrows that dictate the strength axis. And in 99% of cases sheets should be attached horizontally because they are stronger that way. I understand it might minimally reduce the R value but I always try to go with manufacturing specs. At this day and age at what point does expense of products and installation eclipse money saved in heating. I.E. spend extra 5k to save 10$ a month. 400 years to pay it back.

I believe this insulation math needs to be combined with HVAC math to bring costs down. If one is using a Mitsubishi “34-SEER” to heat and cool with fans running 24/7, your consuming the amount of energy of a “space heater” to heat & cool the entire house. Almost to the the point of going “net-negative “ in energy consumption. That said, I want a 6 foot by 6 foot farmers fireplace 2 feet off the ground. Real wood burning.
@MichaelJ67419 күн бұрын
Unfortunately an open fireplace kills the entire HVAC strategy 😢. But you already knew that! 😊 I’m installing a sealed propane fireplace in my otherwise all-electric house for when I want a little ambience and it will also provide backup heat during power outages which are commonplace on the Oregon coast. It’s just not the same as that big roaring fire in a real, open fireplace, though. I don’t quite trust the engineering on a sealed-door wood fireplace (since you have to open the door to add wood) and they are nearly twice the cost of a gas/propane fireplace. For me, it’s a reasonable tradeoff to burn a little fossil fuel every once in a while in exchange for a reliable source of backup heat.

Surely each truss should have a stud directly below it. It's just common sense. Great nailing job but now the nails have punctured the air/water barrier. Are you going to seal the nail heads? And are you really allowed to use a stud knee-wall (which also supports the trusses!) as a window header in New Brunswick? Oh wait, I think I see a single 2 x 10 on edge above it. 👋 Wave= water, air, vapour, energy. It is in order of importance, but ( Pvat 🤢 = precipitation, vapour, air, therma )l it sounds gross so hard to forget. Interior vapor control is more important here then outside air seal as we are in a cold heating climate and condensating vapour comes from inside. Warmer climates with lots of air conditioning is more concerned with vapour from outside. Vapour control and resulting mold and poor air quality is a big issue if not handled.

The Huber ZIP R-X Sheathing-system makes your wall vapor tight which is not something you want with a wooden framed wall. Even worse, it makes your wall vapor thight at the outside which is something to avoid at all cost in a cold climate. What you need are walls that are *air tight but vapor open* at both sides of the wall, such a wall can be used in all climate zones and with all kinds of insulation material between those two air tight layers. The insulation material should also be vapor open. For walls below grade, a vapor tight layer can be used but only at the outside.
@Aron_Jones_CarpenterАй бұрын
The cavity insulation will be vapor open, and there will be a smart vapor retarder.
@koenraadprincen7212Ай бұрын
@@Aron_Jones_Carpenter That's an aid but it also means that your wall and outside sheathing will remain wet during the winter. Solid wood can handle this, OSB a bit lesser...

@koenraadprincen7212 The zip is not at the dew point. If it is not a condensing surface, how will it get wet?
@koenraadprincen7212Ай бұрын
@@Aron_Jones_Carpenter The exterior (ZIP-) tape will be the condensing surface in case there's a leak (crack, hole) in the internal air barrier/vapor retarder. Other source of "wetness" in the wall is a leaking water line, leaking gutter,... It's all about "resilience" of your wooden walls, walls that can dry to both sides are more resilient in case of problems. If you want top notch reslient walls, use "capillary active" materials for your air barriers that are still vapor open, i.e. wood fibre board (LDF, MDF, HB) or fibre cement board. A capillary active material can dry on the outside when it becomes wet on the inside (or visa versa). It's able to transport water in its liquid state where a vapor open material is able to transport water in its gas state.
@peasos863826 күн бұрын
The air barrier is the most essential control in a building. Air carries 254 times more moisture than vapour. The air barrier must be a) continuous and b) on the warm side of the wall. For those in a northern climate, that means the inside. The “air barrier” on the outside is old school language and is misleading. The correct term is now WRB - weather resistant barrier. Exterior insulation is good in that it attempts to minimize thermal bridges from framing members. If warm air gets to impervious exterior insulation, then that may result in condensation….which is why the interior/ warm side air barrier is the most critical. The air barrier can also be the vapour barrier which makes the AVB (air vapour barrier) the most important control element.
