Over Framing Made Simple Project 150 Roof Framing part 6

Last section of roof to frame is the rear over frame. Our engineering requires that we fully sheathe the roof under the over frame. This is also called a California Valley and Scotch Valley.
To shoot level from the rakewall, I used the Stabila LAR350 because I have it and its easy. In the future I'll just use a dot laser. Simple and fast. To figure the sleeper valley bevels, take 90 - (sum of the backing bevels). For a regular roof, you just double the backing bevel and subtract from 90. For irregular roofs, figure backing bevels for both sides, add them together and subtract from 90.
Please remember that I'm not showing the best way to form footings, but just the method that works well for us. Thanks for watching!

When I first started, I took pride in my work, read as much as I could, learned how to use a scientific calculator, cut stairs, hand cut irregular roofs, Calc lazy arches and build curved walls and stairs but I have still learned something with every video for yours I’ve watched (mostly cool tools and products but your gang cutting methods are making me lament the years I’ve wasted cutting joist or stair jacks, one at the time!!) Beveled sleepers are the way to go. A measely 10 minutes more at the saw horses for solid nailing on the valley is worth it. Great. Work. Im really enjoying your channel.

We also tried to go from the top down with our sheathing but when you have to use clips for spacing it makes it really hard to go that way. But it did make sense. The roof turned out awesome. I downloaded buildcalc app and realized I had to set my calculation configuration to mitre saw to get the right hip backing angle. On a 4/12 roof the result (64 degrees roughly for sleeper bevel) is a steeper angle than my skill saw can accomplish. Might cut some bevelled blocking in shop to add to a non beveled sleeper or try this trick next time I’m on a steeper roof. Love the content- learning tons

I understand sheathing a roof like that from the top down. I clapboard from the top down. It's the way I was taught back in 1975 and still do it that way. It is much easier to snap lines on the bottom of the claps as opposed to the tops and if you are using short clapboards like we did 45 years ago, you just slide the lower one under the top one and it stays put.

pull down 4 ft from the ridge, pop a chalk line and go.......ALWAYS start from the ridge down in this situation, and let the dumb stuff work its way out on the last 2 pieces if it wants to.. or at least pull 4 ft lines and chalk them as a control from the top, if you really want to start from the bottom.....been doing this 40 plus years

You said you don't like adding blocking after, when I pre cut blocking or noggins I will add them as I go then you don't need to mark for rafters or joists as well. You just use the noggins as spacers. Providing you have consistent spacing

The best part of carpenter work (I mean carpenters who build or finish for a living not handy man work ; no disrespect meant for surly there is a place for that) is using your skills and tools to build what few other can! Oh trust me I seen good diy try’s and just downright hacking away ! But to stand back and hv it pass inspection or the GC to walk in ( me I am a sub contractor) and say “wow nice work”! Is really satisfying; just makes it worth it ! Oh and of course the “Hondos”!

Nice video. I watch these regularly and enjoy them. If you don’t mind me asking? One important detail you left out or did not emphasize is how did you establish your bottom valley line on the roof? I am referring to your first valley jack that sits on your roof. You have established your two common rafters that are coming into your sub fascia on each side. I see these are nailed into sub fascia in video. How did you get that valley line transferred to top of plywood on your roof? I guess you could plane in a straight edge from your two existing rafters and mark your roof but that may not be very exact due to the few rafters you are planing off of. Did you snap off of the top of your sub fascia to get your valley bottom point since this is where it eventually has to meet at? Did I miss where you started this since I did not look again? Yet. I guess my reason for commenting is that this point is very important on en framing this way and how you establish it. If this is wrong then someone unfamiliar with this framing will really screw it up. I can’t tell if your California valley fascia line is at same elevation of main roof or not here. Can you explain what you did here? I appreciate it and watch your videos all the time.

The plane of the rake wall determines the bottom of the valley on top of the sheathing. As shown at the beginning of the video, I used a laser to set the ridge. Where the shoulders of the beveled valley sleepers meet the ridge determine the top and pull into plane.

When the roofer cuts the OSB for the ridge vent, won’t it be wider then your beveled squash blocks at the ridge? I understand it doesn’t take long to push through the table saw, but seems to have no benefit. Either way, great video and I always look forward to your videos.

The roofers won't cut any of the sheathing, we've already snapped a line down from the ridge and held our sheathing to that 👍👍

A good set of plans will have a detail for the sheathing offset using the ridge vent of choice and providing the correct sq. inches of air space for ventilation, while still maintaining the correct blocked or unblocked diaphragm connection across the ridge.

I Have one question, can the ridge board sit on the sheathing while the sleeper valley join on both sides of the ridge? or does the ridge have to sit on top of the sleeper valley (where both sleepers are joined together and the ridge sits on top of them)

the level cut is always the level cut of the dormer roof, and the bevel is always the bevel of the roof it lands on

When I see you miter your sleeper...I understand you guys more and I lose respect for you. It matters how much $$ you make, and you make more money by not mitering a simple sleeper. How many other needless steps do you take?? There is something to be said for making $1900 / every week when you are happy making $1800 / week and that is you.
