What I love about this movie is how ahead of its time it was. It portrayed how the mass audience will blindly obey and believe whatever the higher ups/celebrities say or do no matter how off the wall it is, with the help of the media (TV Shows, news stations, etc.) and corporate branding constantly controlling how the audience thinks. Not to mention the desperation of wanting to become TV or social media famous, no matter what fucked up things are going on behind the scenes (in this case Brad being basically trapped)

People don't understand that Richard O'brien was not only a visionary, but a future traveling fortune teller who was way before his time. Denton the town portrayed as always filmed live on TV is an exploration of Reality TV and peoples obsession with it, not to mention an examination of Mental illness among the population, which we all know today is a high number of the population. The Music scores ranging from Dark and slow, to fast and punk, with a perverted look at Fetishes, incest (the doctor and his sister), and dress up (with reference to cross-dressing in "Little Black Dress" song") tells me that Richard O'Brien was more then just Observant. He was literally a Visionary. Why did this movie bomb? well for me it didn't I was an instant fan the moment I saw it back in the 90s (the start of the Reality TV Revolution. The Movie Bombed because the people Feared this was their destination,. Your thoughts?

+Jeremy Powell Yeah, it failed for very simple, and very mundane reasons. Some jackass thought that it would be a good idea to make the movie inaccessible, and thus rare and desirable, by way of a limited and highly restricted release. The problem is that critics ended up not liking the movie... and as we all know, critics are infallible. Thus, the movie was doomed to the realms of obscurity. Barely anyone even knows that Shock Treatment exists. Even your most die hard Rocky Horror fan has never heard of this film.

It would've also been nice to probably release it with RHPS so they can at least get their money's worth on a 2 for 1 deal.

It was flawed, had good ideas and intentions, but the actor's guide strike crippled it although the two actors are great as Janet and Brad, they aren't the same as Rocky Horror and that will always annoy some people. As a senior in High School I saw this movie at the premier showing in downtown Denver...late October 1981. Wow...that long ago. I saw the premier advertisement in the newpaper, went out and bought the soundtrack on LP (still have it) and stored the newspaper advert in that LP sleeve. It IS a good movie and does stand up on its own. Of course I have a DVD of it along with as many of the RHPS boxed sets I could get (15th anniv, 25th? anniv) Love both. I was just in Adelaide Australia where my daughter's in-laws had a late wedding party for her and the lady DJ played Time Warp. My daughters eyes and mine locked and we jumped up on the dance floor and tried to perform it as best we could remember. I introduced my daughter to RHPS back in the late 90s...so cool to hear that song being played so far from home.

The musical numbers are once again pretty good and in many ways, the story is ahead of its time, i.e. reality tv. But this film could almost stand on its own as well. There are a lot of films in the history of cinema that just miss the hit status and later on become cult classics . Many got scorned by the critics and the public ignored them but they got a second life because they were good films . Neighbors , Waterworld , At Long Last Love , and Shock Treatment are such films . Now as I have stated on other threads . I don’t consider Rocky Horror a cult classic . Even though it made its way through the Midnight Movie circuit back then , it actually was a mainstream hit. It was a classic not a cult classic. Shock Treatment is the cult classic
@jayanxiety4 жыл бұрын
Make no mistake about it, Shock Treatment IS a cult film, not a genre-defying classic like it's predecessor, but it's original obscurity has actually benefited it's longevity. Slowly over time it's gained a fandom of its own and deserves to be part of the "Denton" saga and not ignored. After all, aren't the lyrics "Science fiction DOUBLE feature"???

I really want to go see this in a theater like Rocky Horror. But it's hard to come by. I wish he would have made the third movie. *sigh*

People have to remember that when this movie was made The American Screen Actors Guild. was on strike making it impossible for Barry, Susan, to be in the "sudo-sequel". ALSO Frankenfurter (along with his creature) died on "that fateful night". He should have listened to me and gone Behind the curtain and not up it.

Thank you for explaining about Barry and Susan. I seriously wondered why they weren't there :D

I get why they couldn’t use Barry and Susan - but given the fact that they used Jessica and Cliff, who are both US actors, how did they get around the strike?

Richard O'Brien (the creator of both Rocky Horror & Shock Treatment) has stated that he considers this film to be an equal to not a sequel to Rocky Horror.
