"We are not alone..." Two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster and Hollywood's brightest new star, Matthew McConaughey, shine in this spellbinding drama of a dedicated astronomer's quest to make first Contact. Despite scorn from her colleagues, "Ellie" Arroway devoutly eavesdrops on the universe. And then, one fateful morning, she hears a cryptic signal. As the world's scientists scramble to decode "the message," Ellie must struggle to become Earth's single emissary on a journey beyond theory or experience. Seeking support, she turns top-level government advisor, Palmer Joss . Separated by very different beliefs, they reunite in their passion for knowledge and truth. From Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carl Sagan's best-seller comes the story of a visionary scientist's unshakable conviction that somewhere in this boundless universe an intelligence yearns for Contact.
Actors: Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Skerritt, David Morse, James Woods, John Hurt, Angela Bassett, William Fichtner

"For Carl" is Carl Sagan. The movie is based on his book "Contact" published in 1985. Carl Sagan was involved in the production of the movie, but he died in 1996, about 6 mos before this movie was released.

That shot of her running through the hall as a child to get the medicine, and it turns out it was a reflection in the mirror, was actually the toughest shot in the whole movie. Finding a way to film it the way they wanted without exposing reflections of the film crew took a lot of really tricky setup.

Clinton was actually speaking those words, but he was talking about a discovered rock believed to have come from Mars. The actual footage was edited into the film to make it seem like he was talking about possible alien contact. There was actually legal controversy over the use of the presidents image and words in a commercial product. And the Carl the film was dedicated to is Carl Sagen who wrote the novel from which the movie was adapted. For another Jodie Foster reccomendation, check out the movie "Nell" (1994)

@@MattRowland No it was a meteorite they believed was from Mars found in Antarctica that had possible signs of life. There were supposedly microfossils of bacteria within the meteorite. I actually remember that press conference and Clinton giving that speech. Of course, it all turned out to be nothing and the "signs of life" were debunked. The cloning of the sheep, Dolly, in Scotland was one month earlier in the same year, though. 1996.

I love this movie. It's grounded in science, but it recognizes the importance of faith, not just in religion, but also faith in your convictions too. I always cry at the beach scene because Ellie makes contact with the aliens, but also gets to have a conversation with her "dad" too. Even though she knows that is not her dad, she is comfortable enough with this form to speak honestly.

This film's theme, which of course was the theme of Carl's novel, is exactly what you suggest: the struggle for the search for truth in both science and in religion. With religion, you need to have faith. Science is supposed to find truth in fact. Dr. Ellie Arroway has lost her faith in God after losing her parents yet has to rediscover faith when she has no real evidence of her trip to Vega. All this from a novel written by a self professed atheist. It is freaking brilliant! I consider myself a Christian believer and don't personally think that science and religion are at odds. Science is the ultimate religion...it can show how beautiful the universe truly is which basically proves that there has to be a God.

@@bjgandalf69 Carl Sagan himself said that he was an agnostic. He actually outright disliked being referred to as an atheist. Here are some of his words on the subject: _"An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid."_ I agree with your thoughts of science "vs" religion. They don't have to be at odds and historically speaking they haven't always been.

Carl Sagan wrote the book. He was a brilliant astrophysicist and teacher. If you haven't watched his incredible series, Cosmos, you should look it up and stream it. It's one of the most globally successful series of all time. EVERYONE was watching it in 1980. That was my first year of college. We all gathered every week in the TV room of my dorm for each episode. The number of lives Carl touched and the number of people he influenced to become scientists is astounding. He was a huge influence on Neil deGrasse Tyson, the most notable science communicator today. He did his own version of the Cosmos series, using the same format, which paid homage to Sagan. But I think you should start with the original. Carl's passion and eloquence are a thing to behold.

I've showed his 4th dimension explanation to my pupils a few times, and I still use some of the shows animations - like the one with evolution or how star formations change over time. Carl Sagan also explains how Eratosthenes know the circumference of the world rather well. It's important that people don't confuse the old and original Cosmos with Carl Sagan to the new one with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I was really looking forward to the new Cosmos, being a fan of the old one, but the new one is made for another type of audience and sadly dumbed-down a lot of things.

The sparkles in their hands were in the shape of the constellation Corona Borealis. Robert Zemeckis confirmed that in an interview at some point. The internet has a million guesses as to why it is seen throughout the movie. The main one being it is Carl Sagan's favorite constellation.

Tom Skerritt is also in the movie A River Runs Through It. A film you must see. A bit about faith, family, fishing, writing, and life. Very much based on a true story.

We don't know if Earth is the only planet sending radio signals. Our radio signals, even though they have been traveling through space for nearly a century, have reached an absolutely minuscule part of the Milky Way galaxy. The galaxy might be awash with planets broadcasting into space, we just won't know it because we're too far away.

If people can't talk now. How everybody BLAMES everybody. How in the world do you think we could do anything together to get into space? It will take all of us to do that. Good luck! Very very good review and thoughts.

No it wont ... it just takes a handful of people in control of large sums of money. Sadly there are far too many idiots in power right now. Even Elon Musk can "do space" (on a limited range so far) on his own. [He does have the wrong target though, because we desperately need to solve global warming and the ONLY VIABLE SOLUTION is to grab some HUGE asteroids from the asteroid belt and put them inbetween earth and sun to reduce the amount of energy that reaches earth. Mars is a stupid idea, because that wouldnt solve the problem of TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVING TOO MANY CHILDREN.]

The Clinton clips are from actual press conferences (about other topics, of course) that they reused for the movie (and obviously in some cases altered), which is why they are only displayed on monitors in the movie

It's helpful to know that the first exoplanet had only been discovered in the early 90s. It's only relatively recently that we've gained the power to observe what, if any, atmosphere these planets have. To date, nothing truly Earth-like has been confirmed. A few are close. The possibility of discovering life elsewhere in the universe has only become more serious in the past few years.

@@AwesomeUSMovies The book is MUCH better than the movie, even though the movie is fun. There is a brilliant fan-made audiobook version of it ~8 hours ... by deaddroppsd72 (or so). The point of the book is - next to the military sci-fi story - an alternate version of democracy where you have to EARN THE RIGHT TO VOTE [and be voted for] ... which seems like a good idea in these times, because many politicians treat the power they are given not very well.
