Just had this same thing happen today to my 99 Taurus SHO with 61k miles. Hope the shop takes good care of my rare car 😟

If you are lucky, you can drop the subframe on the driver side enough to get the valve body and pump shaft out. My pump and shaft were toast and it also damaged the valve body. Replaced them all and now runs like new.

Yes. It is a bit harder to do that on a Ford. Chevy's a little bit easier. But it is still a pain.

Will you ever do an assembly video?
@CurmudgeonTransmission3 ай бұрын
I guess it got lost in the mix. I do have the clips. I will get it edited and up as soon as I can. Probably a week or 2. Thanks for reminding me. In the mean time the 4F50N assembly is almost identical. The valve body portion and channel plate will be different.

I had this transmission rebuilt a few months ago for a 98 lincoln continental and it's appears to be leaking at the TC seal, which was the original problem as to why I had it rebuilt, the shaft was not stripped or worn from what I was told but other parts were pretty far gone. So a full rebuild with new TC was done but I want to know if there a reason the TC seal to leak after 5k miles? Not pouring fluid like before but it's dripping. Just worried something else is causing this seal to leak and it's a pain the rear to drop this trans. Ill do a crown vic in no time but this is a bit more work.

There is an issue with the gray seals, usually National brand seals. This may be your issue. Use the factory Black seals. Also use some 3M weatherstrip adhesive between the seal and case.

What sensor is that white electrical connector near the neutral safety switch?
@CurmudgeonTransmission5 ай бұрын
It is for all the solenoids inside the transmission.

What causes the torque converter splines to strip out? It seems like it spans a WIDE variety of years of the AX4N, you would think theyd have fixed it.

The metal they used. They never did fix it. Enough of them got past the warranty so I don't think they cared.

What years were affected? I have a 99 taurus dohc with the ax4n@@CurmudgeonTransmission

All of them. It is the number one failure with them.

It makes no sense, on the forums some guys have 350k miles on original trans and TC. Im baffled why only some it happens to. @@CurmudgeonTransmission

@@jeedwards1981basic maintenance, doing regular fluid changes and driving like you care about your vehical. Thats why you see old Hondas surviving only 230k even though some of them hit 500k+

Takes a long time to do it manually, but will get to it when I can. Thanks for watching.

When this transmission was being designed, the engineers were tasked with it being able to tolerate 220 foot pounds of torque. in the end they said it couldn’t be done so they played with shift strategy and what not. So we got failures
