THIS!! Part of the reason it took me so long to even start watching hood movies is because they seem to never have happy endings. Menace II Society messed me up for the longest

So much was going on in the streets in the 90s that I think filmmakers were hyper focused on providing a cautionary tale for people in the life that they didn’t care about the happy or sad ending…just the most realistic or jarring ending for the viewer. Beyond scared straight, film edition.

Facts. I know this is a probably a common thought but Anthony’s ending was the saddest. He served this country and thought that robbing an armored truck would help take care of his family. His old lady wouldn’t get rid of Cutty, his mom was consistently on him, and the stuff he witnessed in Vietnam

I would put some of these in the classic "tragedy" category where the heroic downfall represents poetic justice for the events in the rest of the film. Contrast that against films like Friday, Above the Rim, and White Men Can't Jump that have a satisfactory ending for the main character. To me, the grittier the story, the more you need that challenging ending for the main character.

Friday is more of a comedy movie that takes place in the hood. It has a more lighter tone so it really isn't a Hood drama movie like the others. Above the Rim has a positive ending. The worst thing is Marlon Wayans is now a murderer and he probably faces a bad outcome of either jail, death, or a deeper spiral into street life.

@@67psychoutWe don't deserve happy endings? We just should swallow weaponised trauma and propaganda like it's a medicine? Calle when they show a black American movie that's not hood, about banging, sex, drugs, nihilism, being ignant, or a church movir. 90% of us don't even live in a city or a violent suburb. And most naive impressionable knuckleheads think that what's it means to be black and try to live down to that.

They were definitely going for realism in these films and realistically, the ending was justified. It can go two ways: have a somewhat happy ending to show that you can overcome circumstances, or have an unhappy ending to show that this is exactly what will happen when you keep going down the wrong path.

I think they were trying to point out the kind of consequences that can come your way for being about that life. By that logic, Kane should have lived long enough to move out the hood in Ronnie in Menace II Society.

The thing is Doughboy by murdering Ferris becomes in the cycle of violence in the community. He most likely would either go to prison or get killed. I'm guessing he was most likely murdered for killing Ferris and his people since he died shortly thereafter.
@DTowns1Finest
@DTowns1Finest 10 ай бұрын
In my opinion Doughboy dying is symbolic that the cycle will continue....ricky's son is in the house with his mother who clearly was kicked out and his grandmother who already ruined two sons whom was buried two weeks apart. they already didnt hold ricky accountable for anything and now him dying has cause a standard to be put in his son life that is unfair and the severity of the question "what will happen to ricky's son" more prevalent than ever. once again a boy is around brenda with no male role model.

There is no such thing as a happy Hood movie. However, a lot of the endings from the moves mentioned did have a happy ending. ****It's important to note that just because it's a Tragic Movie doesn't mean it has a Tragic Ending.**** Poetic Justice, Jason's Lyric, Jersey Drive, Above the Rim, South Central, and Boys in the Hood all had happy endings. The Main Character survived, made better decisions, or even made it out of the Hood.

So 8 years go by, he's out on good behavir... someone picks him, goes back to the old neighborhood. Everyone knows he's gettin out. It's almost like a celebration to most of the peple.. He and theperson who picks him up get out of the car.... BOOM!!!! He's got. Blown away. Who did it??? The little girl he used as a shield at the wedding!!!! On the doughboy and fudge point; me personally, I like to think that fudge isn't from an all-too-alternate universe. As in, perhaps fudge is from an alternate universe BUT, he did live doughboys life, BUT he didn't get killed. Doughboy, in that universe, maybe became a recloose after getting his revenge/ surviving his brother's death. Got his GED (if he didn't have it already) before going to college and being a super senior who games the system by racking up debt FOREVER. Simply, I think it's unnecessary for his life to be completely different for things to have gone different, using the butterfly effect theory; the smallest change can make the biggest difference. Also, doughboy wasn't a dummy! If I'm not mistaken, he spoke of books in boyz, and I don't think it was simply to make a point about enriching one's self within the institution. I think doughboy, even with his circumstances, could've been like fudge - based off personal experience, and the friends I have left who changed their lives to do better. I wasn't far from doughboy when I was 17 and 18, and at 21 I am far from a fudge. I think it's completely plausible to go against your environment, even when it seems all too late, and still survive it to prosper in the end. Thank you for this video, bringing us these discussions, and etc it's nice to have found insightful KZbinrs such as yourself.

From the way I saw how the final scene ended on poetic justice, it wouldn’t be a depressing ending or a sad ending where something bad happened, so I wouldn’t really count poetic justice as not having a happy or a better ending as the film did end in a more of a positive note than other films, so yeah if it was me personally I would remove poetic justice from this list or I would have not even thought about trying to include that film onto this list in the first place

I've always been very far removed this this black experience. I use to be sad about it as a teen because i can't get involved in these convo (yes im aware i can watch them now i couldn't as a teen and i choose not to as an adult). But someone made a comment about how they didn't realize all the movies they put someone on to had a sad ending and they said as a child they were just conditioned to think they wouldn't have a happy ending.... so.... Like the dialogue! I’ve always peeped that out as well with the hood movie thing. Even now, you can watch any of these hood movies out here and it’s always the same exact theme. It’s beyond cliche at this point and the genre to me is dull and boring. I also think, especially at that time, that hood movies were used as a means of programming to reinforce certain stereotypes as well as pushing the idea that the hood and ghetto are the epitome of the black experience thus reinforcing self defeatism and low expectation along with a misguided view of what it means to be black. All in all, great analysis.

Great video guys! If Caine didn’t get “got” he would’ve went to jail because O-dog kept showing the tape. So even if he did go to ATL with Ronnie I feel like he still would’ve went to jail. I also wonder how did they find him at Ronnie’s house just as he was leaving. Menace 2 Society is very realistic because people do die when they’re trying to change. 🤷‍♀️ I feel like Caine was stuck he had good sense just around the wrong people. Because when he got shot the first time and O-dog came over it seems like Caine was going to chill in the house. (Side note): There’s an actually a clip after the shooting where Ronnie and Anthony are sitting on the stairs I’m guessing waiting on the police.

Josh died, mama fired 😂😂😂!!! I cannot! The 90s hood movies wore my young a** out back then and scarred me for a long time. The first movie that made me cry was South Central and it was at the end when Bobby is face to face with Ray Ray. And maybe it's Glenn Plummer's I don't want to say impediment or lisp, but the way he says 's' words like 'sh' made me infantilize him, and I was all of about 8 years old balling hearing him confront Ray Ray and trying to keep Jimmy from following that same path. The whole speech was moving and did it for me 😪, but I thought that had a happy ending at the time. Jason's Lyric was another one that made me cry. I knew Josh was the antagonist, but I still felt empathy for him and I remember seeing Treach cut him, I ran out of the room cause that was too much for a 9 year old to bear 😅! Although I was happy to see him get revenge on the other guys, I knew his life banked on Jason being there and when he was like " I ain't got nothin'!", my lil young a** was balling again like I was at a funeral 😂 and left the room, which is what I would always do when I would cry during a movie, cause you know your siblings would tease you for that 😂. Boyz in the Hood, I didn't watch the movie but my oldest sister and mother did. I remember walking in on the part when Ricky is being killed, but I hadn't watched the movie so I wasn't invested in the character, so it didn't break me like I'm sure it would have. Between these hood movies, after school specials and 'The Awakening', I just wanted no more parts. I have only one brother and although we weren't teens just yet, these movies and what was going on in Chicago (sadly still), made me feel that was going to be my brother's fate. So when my mama walked in with 'The Inkwell', I instantly started crying and was like I don't want to see another one of these movies where there's killing in it. But then she assured me Inkwell wasn't one of those, and of course it wasn't 😂😂. But those movies coming out back to back, and with gang violence prevalent, was tramatic and stressful asf back then. I'm 38 now, but these movies traumatized me as a kid. They're all classics and have their place and I love all the movies to this day, but when you're living in a time when children not that much older than you are being killed (Yummy) and other children killed in drive-bys, it does a number on your psyche. Great breakdown again ❤✌🏾!

Part 1 - I think that the morality plays have always been a part of telling stories. If we go back to the 70’s, we had black heroes rising from the slums full of pimps and hoes. Fast Forward to the 90’s… The stories talked about the people who were still in those slums but are not heroes. The appeal of your channel is the multiverse question of “What if….” What are the directors trying to say? Back in the 70’s, they were saying that we need to see ourselves a strong people in a world that is not glamourous. The commentary for South Central is redemption. For Boyz in the Hood…it was regret. In Menace II Society…it was about morality. The people who died were among the most moral while the people who lived had to hold on to the grief. Poetic Justice…is about relationships. It’s the spark that starts a relationship and what brings people together. Relationships with our friends and how we change. It was watching a growing relationship between two broken people. I wouldn’t say this one was negative. They got it together. Set It Off . Greed. As they kept doing robberies, they all changed. The movie did have some interesting feminist themes. Jason’s Lyric…the movie was about the romance, but the real story was about the brothers. (Mom lost her job) The boys were damaged and one found an escape with his girl. New Jack City (one of my ultimate favorites). The answer to this question is Ice T’s reaction to Nino Brown’s death. Indifference. Nino died but the drugs didn’t die. There will be another Nino and more death. “Just Say No” was flawed back then. What were we saying “Yes” to? The ending was a question mark. Belly…man, that movie is messy. I agree that it wasn’t great. It was a music video that was turned into a movie. (I wrote this line before you said it…) This is did end well. Sincere made it to Africa with his family. He only got shot in the leg. Tommy found redemption from the Reverend.

32:59 I do not feel that Jason’s Lyric was a happy ending. Especially when you think about it from the mother’s perspective. Her husband went off to war and came back a different man, one of her children has killed multiple people and then offed himself. If we follow the idea that Jason and Lyric are indeed dead at the end of the film then the mother has essentially lost everyone in her life to gun violence. Her husband and her children are all dead. If we follow the idea that Jason and Lyric are alive at the end it’s still sad. As there really is nothing that showed that Jason overcame his trauma (in fact he’s probably more traumatized now that his brother is dead) and the mother has essentially lost everyone she’s ever loved. Her husband is dead, Joshua is dead and her remaining son has abandoned her. Just a side note: I actually prefer y’all’s fan theory of the film to the common interpretation of the film. I feel that in many ways Jason’s Lyric was about how unhealthy codependency is. With Jason, Joshua, and Lyric ultimately dying at the end of the film I truthfully feel that would have sent the message more clearer. I feel that the common interpretations is kind of having your cake and eating it too. To me Jason’s Lyric should have a tragic ending. 53:00 I’m not sure if I would call it a Hood Movie. But there’s as a 1999 movie called “Asunder”. Starring Michael Beach, Debbi Morgan, Blair Underwood. I rolled my eyes watching the ending because it was so predictable. There’s this trope in black films that I have noticed that I have called “The Darkskin serial killer” trope. In which there’s usually three main stars in the film. One of them is a dark skin man, and the other two are a lighter skinned or light skinned couple. The Dark Skin man terrorizes them throughout the film, he kills some white or light skin woman and eventually meets his end. Films like Jason’s Lyric, No Good Deed, and Asunder all fit into this sort of trope. So when I watched that film I rolled my eyes because I knew how it was going to end. JOHN DIED, MAMA FIRED

I mean, most real life hood tails end in tragedy. You can’t kill a bunch of folks or sell a bunch of bricks without any static or recoil. Even just being a civil bystander in the hood ends in tragedy most times than it should. These films were supposed to be visceral to steer the youth from going down that road. But unfortunately it inadvertently made the youth want to live out their favorite movie.

Part 2 - Friday…yeah, Ice Cube got Nia Long. That’s the end of that discussion. Tales from the Hood. It’s another moral tale and it depends on the character. It was happy endings for people who were hurt and got their revenge. New Jersey Drive. The director didn’t like the movie and I think that made this movie a negative movie overall. Above the Rim. Hmmm. Here’s what you should do. The guy who wrote the screenplay for Above the Rim, also wrote New Jack City and Sugar Hill. So…are these three movies connected? Anyways, it ended well. Higher Learning depends on the character. Malik didn’t win. Remy didn’t win. Kristen won. She found her strength and her voice. I think there was some portion of happiness in this one. The Wood. This was positive because it was about brotherhood and accountability. Best Man also ended positive. It’s a good movie. You mentioned stories and the amount of them in a movie. I think that people lean towards the one that hits them the hardest. In the Best Man, I leaned towards the good moments I had with a female friend that I couldn’t have. Waiting to Exhale. I can’t speak on that one. Ha ha But it ended wrong for me. There was suppose to be a sequel to this flick. Whitney Houston’s death ended that dream and that made it a bad ending for us all. Dead Presidents was negative, but it was a morality tale. He had chances to turn away as did all of the others. But he chose poorly. Fresh…last one you covered. He was going to be in witness protection with his sister. He met with his dad and his dad yelled at him making him cry. So, I think it will end better because he will be in a better place. Movies you missed…. Juice, White Men Can’t Jump, Candyman, 187, Deep Cover, Clockers… Maybe Girl 6 and Crooklyn as well. I watched to the end but forgot the phrase. Mama Cried John Died or something like that. Sorry.

For South Central In Particular. I think the ending & throughout the film. The emphasis they are focused on is 'The Chance'.. cuz Alot of 'Hood Ppl' feel like they have no chances. Let alone .. 2nd or 3rd chances.. so it's like.. by the end.. specifically.. Bobby has a chance of getting off parole & changing his life.. Jimmy has a Chance. Ray has a chance and new enlightenment to influence a change in his ways.. That movie specifically. Is about Chances.. which I feel is necessary.. and also.. Can be problematic to a certain extent

Whereas with hood movies, there are questions that aren't addressed fully. I said this in Axiom's south central video, I'd love for og Bobby and Jimmy to have the ultimate happy ending, but realistically- as it's portrayed in the movie itself- that was highly unlikely because they glossed over so many things (and let's be honest, little Jimmy should have lived with nurse Shelly. That would have been the true happy ending).
