How do u keep the water cool?? Cause I want one so bad but afraid of the temp not being good enough
@likeastarbaby7 жыл бұрын
+stephanie ruggiero yeah to be honest i'm a little concerned about that...i live in a temperate climate but even in winter i've struggled keeping his tank below 21C without turning my radiator off and freezing to death. I'm planning to upgrade his tank to one with a mesh lid (you can see in the video that taylor has a gap on each side of her lid), as I think the issue could be solved with better evaporation of the water. i think its something that everyone struggles with though unfortunately, coolers are ridiculously cumbersome and expensive (even if you have the money it seriously doesnt even look worth doing), and fans are ineffective and loud. i guess i'll just have to cross that bridge when i come to it! taylor lives in fuckin texas or something and seems to manage okay so i'm not too worried.
@seraphimseptimus69847 жыл бұрын
I keep newts, which also require cold temperatures, and there are a lot of different ways to cool the. Some people use chillers, which are very expensive and honestly only make sense to me if you have a larger aquarium, multiple aquariums to cool, live in a very hot place, or you are conditioning newts for breeding (many species need to spend a few months below 55' F to enter breeding condition). For smaller aquariums, other solutions include floating frozen water bottles on the surface, running fans like those shown in the video, running an air conditioner, or placing the aquarium in a cool room like a basement.

they don't need live food and most eat either blood worms or pellets if not earthworms and don't require any coolers if you monitor the water temp, they can't live with other species cuz they often mistake axies as food and can try to eat them and their gills, and I've never seen any of my axies stressed from no substrate. But California has newts ... You can float frozen water bottles, but that is only effective in smaller aquariums and causes temperature fluctuations where you want stability. Your best bet is utilising a cool basement/ room, water bottles if you need two or three more degrees, and a chiller if you need to bring the water down more than 5' F. Chillers keep the water temperature more consistent and don't require a human running around with water bottles all day, so they are worth the money for an animal that can live fifteen to thirty years.

Awesome video, just a quick tip on pronouncing Axolotl. In Mexico, we pretty much speak and pronounce places and animals in their indigenous language rather than anglicize them. In Náhuatl, the x is like a sh sound, and the tl is like the second syllable in the word "little". Add that together and you should pronounce it like Ah-show-low-tl. Viva el Axolotl!

PiMama92 that "you shouldnt get any pet" is a bit much. Because there are pets that _are_ easier than axolotls (saying from experience). And depending on where you live can really change what you need to do for it. AND, if something is wrong with the axolotl, there are almost no vets with any experience on water animals, so your pet would die, or suffer a long time.

Nice video, Taylor. Thanks for describing how to take care of an axolotl. I'm fascinated by axolotls from the day I read a fictional short story. They are ancient and so interesting, OMG! The video was highly informative and fun to watch! I think I might use my tank for an Axolotl next! The lakes where the Axolotl prominently lived were drained to prevent flooding in case you were wondering to the specifics. Including other metrics in your video will widen your public (Celcius and litres, the only ones that use Fahrenheit and gallons is the US and maybe the UK. You are excluding 96% of the worlds population with your use of Fahrenheit due to sheer frustration of them having to look up what a gallon is). Also a friend of mine has a solid bottom with bumps. What's your opinion on this idea? The animal has a load of grip but can't thrash around... He said the animal would be happiest and healthiest this way.

I do not know if she made a cleaning video since this one, or if your question was answered by the response was deleted, but caudate aquariums are maintained the same way as fish aquariums, with the basics of established aquarium maintenance being weekly water changes (~ 20 - 30%) and substrate vacuuming. Axolotls are also very messy so a turkey Bastor will be your # 1 tool. You should do spot cleaning in between water changes. Depending what you're feeding them their poops can be extremely messy.

Nice video, and indeed I I've never seen a wild ajolote in the Xochimilco's lake, here in Mexico City, nevertheless there have been important studies in order to restore the natural balance in the lake, also, in the Nahuatl and Spanish pronunciations the "x" is not pronounced as in the word Mexico, the x is pronounced "j" like a strong "H" in English, the word Axolotl is Nahuatl and in Spanish is Ajolote.
@TonyfromTO7 жыл бұрын
lacrthxx14 English and Spanish both got it wrong. it's asholotl, just like meshico, sholotlan from sholotl or oashaca.

If it where me I would use I would use a canister filter with it plumbed to a reverse plenum. Forcing the flow underneath the Substrate throughout the tank will reduce current, and create enough updraft to keep detritus suspended. If using sand, Joey has a video on reverse sand jets. If you pump the water back from a sump it will also oxygenat the lower water column in the tank.

You have some great Axos! I saw your video feeding Medusa and the 2 Gorgans and heard your comments on the new chiller. I live in Michigan and my ambient room temperature winter is 66º and in summer 75º. I bought a 6" USB fan for $8.99 at Meijer and lay it on top of my 20 gallon tank screen. I'm steady at 66.6º summer and 66º winter. Simple. Cheap. Happy

Axolotls are owned in many countries. They aren't allowed to be taken from the wild as they are almost extinct. The only ones you will ever find are captive bred ones. You can find them online on ebay for sale, or from some breeders.

Perfectly Imperfect it's basicly just a normal fish tank but cold? And bigger worms for food ? It's really not that much compared to any animal
@seraphimseptimus69847 жыл бұрын
Keeping aquariums cool is a headcase compared to keeping them warm, but it is still doable with proper planning.
@amberlilly18997 жыл бұрын
depends where u live because like my turtles tank most the time was below 70 just stting there so i mean + a fan would be fine for keeping it cool enough and then minus that its not that diffrent from caring for most animals
@seraphimseptimus69847 жыл бұрын
I live in the north and our summers can get just as brutal as our winters, so cooling the aquarium in the summer requires a bit more than a fan (I rotate frozen water bottles), but it does not help that my parents refuse to use an air conditioner. Reptiles are by no means easy, but their needs are different, like comparing any other type of animal. Caudates are more sensitive to water quality and contaminants because of their permeable skin, but most species do not require special lighting and receive almost all of their nutrients from one food source - worms.
@Girl-fw9nl7 жыл бұрын
Perfectly Imperfect Even though she makes it sound super hard its quite easy. I have one myself. As soon as you get the tank set up all you need to do is feed it.

For the temperature and having no fan does “Antarctica or something” count as Alaska? This is a joke..ok? But I do live in Alaska
@AndyPMusic5 жыл бұрын
Possibly. The easiest way to know is to put a thermometer in a room temperature bowl of water. If it says it's 66 or lower then you don't need a fan.

I plan on getting an axolotl soon and I was wondering if its true that they have to be with other one when they reach 6 inches. If that's true what size tank would you recommend for 2 of them
@conixx917 жыл бұрын
no, they do not need another axolotl in the tank when they reach 6 inches, i've never heard of that before. but, if you're still planning on getting another one, they at least 10 gallons per axolotl, so a 20 gallon tank. although, i personally would get a 30 gallon tank if it falls within your budget, the bigger the better.

Yes, I feed mine mainly nightcrawlers and minnows. Occasionally a thawed cube of bloodworms for a treat, but bloodworms really aren't a balanced diet, they are super high in fat. Words of wisdom about minnows now; always quarantine your feeder fish in a separate tank for at least a month before feeding to make sure they're not carrying anything icky. Never feed your Axies their minnow meals in their normal home tank. The up and down bio load from increasing and decreasing amount of animals in your tank will throw your levels off and can really mess with your tank. I learned this the hard way by throwing about a dozen minnows in with my 3 Axies awhile back for them to eat over a few days time. Now, I use a feeding bin. A small rubbermaid box about the size of a shoebox. Put about 5" of conditioned, cool water into the box. Add the amount of minnows you want your Axie to eat. Net your Axie from their home tank, bring them to the feeder bin and put them in there to eat. I usually leave each one in the bin for about 2 hours. Then they go right back to their tank. This is also nice if you have multiple Axies as it allows you to see exactly how much each one is eating, whereas if you just huck a bunch of fish in with multiple Axies you really have no idea if they are all eating the right amount unless you sit there the whole time and watch. Do not panic if you Axies ever suddenly throw up fish or worms. Sometimes they will eat too fast, or too much, and they just throw up. It can be disturbing to watch, but I've noticed it will happen more in Juveniles who just eat too large of a meal. Another thing worth mentioning is that earthworms/red wrigglers/nightcrawlers all can secrete a bitter flavored thick mucus when stressed. They don't always, but sometimes you might see your Axie spitting up a worm or just seeming to have a hard time with it. You might even see the whiteish mucus from the worm in your Axies mouth, or on the worm itself, etc. They can secrete quite a bit of the stuff and some Axies really, really hate the taste. I have one that will not eat worms at all. He learned that they have the ability to do that and now he just assumes they all taste bad. Good luck with yours, they're really neat animals!

I was camping in Oregon when I was younger and I saw what looked like a giant salamander in the water and I thought it was the coolest thing. I was in the water with it and just looking at it, the water wasn't super clear but clear enough to see that it was there. It was like sitting on the rocks and I would get close and it would walk off the rick and then swim away. watching this video made me remember that and now I'm really scared it wasn't a salamander and I have no idea what it was
