I'm a guitar teacher. One of my students (for the last 10 years or so) is THE Megadeth fan. We've learned most of Dave's catalog, including many of the finger busting solos of Marty, Chris, and Kiko. Over the time working on these songs, my student and I have bonded over Dave's genius time and time again. My student is now writing his own music fueled by the pure, unfiltered guitar lightbeam that Dave has shown us... and it makes me so proud. Also, I wanted to mention what a class act Dave is. My student recently met Dave at a Megadeth show. The picture they took together didn't turn out the best. Dave heard about this and sent my student some signed picks and strings from a show. Dave also said he would set up another meet and greet to get a better picture 🎸

I met Dave waaay back during the Clash of the Titans tour at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burggetstown, PA. We had before meet and greet in a hospitality tent. My friend brought his camera, and Dave took it and pointed the lens up towards him, took a photo of his snarling face and handed the camera back to my bud! Still have the picture, along with a bunch of others of Anthrax and Slayer. The show was beyond intense, with chairs being thrown, seats ripped out, and general Metal Mayhem. Its a great memory, one I'll never forget! 💯👍🤘🎸🎶

I agree. I see them every time they come through my area...the last being about a year ago...and since they tuned down to D standard, his singing has drastically improved. Even with his throat cancer diagnosis and treatment, his vocals have been solid. Dave is one of the greatest riff writers ever..but what I find to be the most impressive thing about him is that he is able to sing and play his stuff at the same time. I can't sing and play chords...

I just saw them for the sixth time at the White River amphitheater on August 12th. They sounded so amazing and their new guitarist is so badass. Im a guitarist and they didn't miss a note that night. @@tjcaruthers5593 I think Hysteria is a masterpiece, but it's like Metallica's Black Album or Judas Priest's Painkiller - where they're so "perfect" and well produced that they lack a little of the character of some earlier, less polished or less commercial records. I do think Def Leppard have done some decent stuff since, but it's not NWOBHM certainly.

I have to politely disagree. I always felt that they became a very special band when they started writing super dense, pop metal with tons of overdubbed guitar parts. That being said , I am mostly a fan of extreme metal ( death, thrash, groove etc) and so when it comes to more commercial metal and hard to k , I tend to be into the power ballads. Whether it's Poison, or skid row I usually skip right to the " every rose has its thorns* or the " I remember you" type songs .

I love that he discussed "the riff". Something you don't hear as much in metal anymore is a really good RIFF, like you did in the 70s and 80s. What people often called riffs now aren't really such, they're still mostly part of the accompaniment. For something to be a riff, it's gotta have a melody to it, a quality that counterpoints with the underlying chords--regardless of whether it's a single-note thing or if it's a chord progression. The opening chords to Highway to Hell is a riff because those chords form a melody in them. Seek and Destroy's opening phrase is a definitive riff..again, it's got a melody. When you hear all the "butt-rock" on the radio or typewriter stuff, there aren't a lot of true riffs in there.
@JB-lp9xr
@JB-lp9xr 2 ай бұрын
Yep. My definition of a riff is; If you can pick up a guitar, play it, and the song is instantly recognizable, then it’s a riff. It has to stand on its own. There are so many songs now where the guitar part is just one ingredient in a big mushy mess.
@UseTheSupeRsonic
@UseTheSupeRsonic 2 ай бұрын
@@JB-lp9xr well it goes back to the melodic element, but you're spot-on. A major reason I have a hard time getting into most of the metal now, is just like you said: there's so much MUSH. It's all loaded up with atmospheric effects and I can't headbang to that shit. I hate to say it, but Devin Townsend is one of those artists I struggle with, Jinjer, Spiritbox and all that stuff, Lorna Shore. Super talented, but every song is just SLATHERED in reverb. I'm definitely no purist by any means, but there's just too much shit going on in a lot of these bands' songs. I'd rather be listening to Lady Lightning by Picture or Motorcycle Man by Saxon.
@221b-l3t
@221b-l3t Ай бұрын
I joined a symphonic metal band and I've been injecting some good riffing to make it interesting. Been ripping of the best of the 80s. Some power chords a few fiddly bits to make it like a melody and a few thirds instead of just piwer chords to add flavour. They look at me like I'm some sort of genius but I just listen to a bunch of Ratt and Dokken and all that and do my best impression. :) Bit more interesting than open E chugging. Which a lot of metal is these days. That's why I like death metal despite not being a big fan of the vocals. They still got awesome riffs. Kinda mixing the clichee 000000000 with some melodic elements. But yeah Ratt is great. Like you say if you can recognise the song by hearing the riff it's good. I think half my riffs are blatant imitations of "What you give is what you get" and a few Dokken songs. I add my Sabbath influence for some doomy sounding stuff and make sure to rip off some melodies from Bach and Mozart and voilà, awesome riffs that I can play all day long and headbang until my lovely neighbourhood cops show up to admire my Marshall and issue a threat. :) I think I know all of them now. The highlight was a super beautiful female cop who played guitar making suggestions on ehat frequencies to cut so it didn't make the entire apartment complex shape. But if you're raising the volume every few minutes beyond the point of pain and near uncontrolled feedback you know you have a banger! But often I get the vocal melody first and I can make a chord progression for that but I've been struggling to turn chord progressions into riffs without it sounding obvious that that's what I'm trying. Been ripping off Hendrix too, just play the chords and add a few moving parts to make it a different chord and a few fiddly bits in between. Of course I don't want to exaggerate my talent for riffs since this Friday someone will buy my first and only Marshall to pay for rent. So definetly still doing the pizza boy thing but we got some studio time booked and a few gigs. I could really use some cash... and thankfully none of them listen to Yngwie Malmsteen so my aweful impressions of him for leads has been turning a lot of heads. If anyone remembered the 80s my playing would be extremely unimpressive but most don't so I'm good. I shall soon be ripping off Randy Rhoads as well.

Needs to be an asterisk next to that particular Diamond Head record: Get the original 1980 version with Sean Harris, that re-recording is awful, get the original.
@paulh6673
@paulh6673 2 ай бұрын
It's a bit confusing, but that artwork is just a reissue of the original album, and it is the version with Sean Harris. It is just remastered. The re-recording has a mainly white album cover, in a sort of homage to the original self-released version. I don't mind it, and Ras is a really great vocalist, but I can understand people not enjoying that sort of thing. To further muddy the waters, the little audio clip they played of Am I Evil was from the re-recording with Ras!

And untimely. He was starting to get a little bit of attention and the Maiden guys where beginning to talk to him a little more, I was hoping for some collaborations or something and then suddenly he was gone. Along with Number of the Beast, the first two albums are my favourite. I'm not a huge Maiden fanatic anymore but I still love those albums.

AC/DC was a huge shock for so many people around the world, and always today for young generation, i was 14 and, i'm 60 today and well, they are deep in my brain and my soul until my end. Angus Young : unique, Bon Scott SO unique and rare , Malcolm, Cliff, Phil, Brian, uniques and the combination was sublime. I went last week to a scholl of music and i saw a young boy with a too much heavy guitar on his shoulders (may be 7 or 8 ) and he wanted to learn... T.N.T. !!! 😅 young people are not wrong ...aren't they ? big hug from France to all American, happy Xmas, enjoy ! life is short . Alain
