I had the same exact one for the expensive one. Its definitely miles better than the cheap one. But its got a learning curve. Once you figure it out it runs absolutely flawless and will take you more places than the cheap one. Its most likely not starting and stalling because you are starting it under load. It has bigger props than the cheap one so its pushing more water so you are starting it with a ton of load. The best way to start it is to tilt the prop out of the water and start it. Let it warm up for a a few seconds and then its good to go. Also you had the prop too deep in the water. It’s supposed to sit just under the surface of the water so you should see a big rooster tail if it’s adjusted right. This will get you way more speed and it will also help with stalling. And it pushes better through mud that way. Its a surface drive to thats how its supposed to run. Lastly the props are cheap and thin for a reason. Since it has no clutch or anything, there is nothing stopping the prop from getting power if you hit something really hard. So those props are just a sacrificial piece that is SUPPOSED to break in the event that you hit a huge rock really hard. They break so your prop shaft or engine components dont break. That would absolutely wreck your engine if it went from max rpm to a dead stop because you hit something so they break to save you from that. They are really cheap to replace, like $10 each. You are supposed to always have a few with you. But honestly i only broke 2 and it took a lot of abuse before they broke. They are stronger than they look. If you go on the mud skipper website they have stainless options you can get but if you don’t have the clutch its definitely not advised that you run those. After i figured out how to set it up correctly i was able to rip it across the water at 20 mph. You just have to take the time to really work it out.

you have to remove the governor on the engine to get higher rpm and speeds. I have the sc200, which is more matched to the 7.5hp. I have the same bilt hard engine with the governor removed and a stage 1 kit off it on a 12ft jon. Does over 10mph with just me and all my gear. Goes anywhere I can float.
