Azula’s Mom Meets the God of Faces... #avatarthelastairbender #avatar #atla As Team Avatar gets chased out of the forgetful valley we see Ursa and Ikem make their way into the valley in the past, as together they survive in the forest for years living off of the land, and capturing all of their own food, until one day the Giant Spirit Wolf appears before them drinking from the pond near their camp, which lets Ikem know that the God of Faces is near. Ursa tells Ikem that living like this with him over the last few months makes her think that she’s finally found her place in this world, but when Ikem suggests that she goes to get her kids so they God of faces can change them all and make them a family, she tells him that he doesn’t know Ozai and doing this would just place their entire village in danger. As the god of faces exits the water, we see Ursa walking up asking her for a brand new face, but the Mother wonders why Ursa who has a face so beautiful, would want another, asking her if she’d even take an extremely plain face. It’s here where Ursa realizes that just changing her face won’t take away her pain, so the Mother of Faces offers to wipe all her painful memories away however this would also wipe away the memory of her children. Ursa at first doesn’t want to do it, but eventually apologizes to Zuko and Azula for being such a horrible person, and agrees to wipe her memories so her new life can begin.

I like how this makes Ursa so much more human. In the show, she was a mystery, but what little we did know of her showed that she was a gentle, loving mother. Now, with the information from the comics, we see that Ursa was a very imperfect person. I don't doubt her when she said she loved her children, however, the trauma and abuse she went through as Fire Lady clearly twisted the goodness in her a bit. She killed Azulon to save Zuko, yes, but she also did it so she could be free. Her fear of Azula also kept her from loving and taking care of her properly. And in the end, her pain proved stronger than her love for her children, and she chose herself over them. Even though her actions were inherently selfish and caused Zuko and Azula to suffer, you can understand why she made such difficult choices. I think it's a very realistic response and I like her character a lot more for it.

In some ways she had to distance herself from Azula as even though she loved her very much, she was becoming more and more like her father. Even Azula admitted to that apparently later in the comics to form of her mother (not actually her mother). I don't blame Ursa for the choices she made. In the end she technically did what was best for her own children as well as her own being. I doubt it, but it could be possible in a later comic her getting memories back of her time with Ozai and her family. Although I don't see the creators bringing it up unless its like a flash back or them in old age.

Imagine tho in like a different au where they actually brought Azula and Zuko and had all the 3 of them change faces, erase memories and start new lives as a family it would deeply impact the entirety of the series. Since cuz of that Zuko wouldn't know the Avatar to such a bestie level or even know uncle Iroh or even see who Mai is. Aang wouldn't have a proper fire teacher and The fire Nation might not even have a firelord after or if Ozai is defeated. Also if Azula and Zuko along with their mother have new faces and lose their memories of Ozai than Ursa can be a better mother and treat them better while Zuko and Azula might become closer cuz they wouldn't remember a rivalry or even want one since they aren't pressured to do so. It would also change many diplomatic things, roles, events, and people if this actually happened

The decision she made feels so human. I personally haven’t read the comics, but I’m aware of why she abandoned Zuko and Azula. In the show, she’s portrayed as a gentle and loving mother and thats what I have always thought of her as. It’s really cool to see that her decision completely contradicts with that portrayal. What I think is especially cool is how it envokes feelings in the readers/comments of how unlike-able this decision is. I really love the way Avatar writes their characters!!!

Contradicts? She couldn’t go back, or Ozai would follow through on his threats to kill everyone she loved, and her entire village. Although, if she hadn’t been conditioned into feeling so helpless, she could’ve tried taking on another face before returning, to try to effectively kidnap her own kids, both of whom were powerful fire benders, as a stranger. But even then, Ozai might destroy the village once his children were gone.

As a parent, losing a child in any form or fashion is the single worst thing that could happen to you. In her situation I’m not quite sure I would make the decision (as reunification was always hypothetically possible), but if I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would never see my child again in this life… I would end myself. Taking my memories would be the only thing that could convince me to keep going and living. It’s not to live peacefully, it’s to survive. And it’s terrible and selfish, and her kids would have every right to not forgive her for it, but people do horrible things when it’s a matter of surviving to the next day.

Zuko was treated horribly by Ozai because Azulon favored Iroh than Ozai, this leads to him hating Zuko and Zuko running to his mom for comfort. Thiscauses Azula to be neglected by her mother because she had a stronger bond with Zuko then Azula (she did call *HER OWN CHILD A MONSTER* ) thus leading Azula seeking validation from Ozai who made her a mini-me and didn't give a crap about her. All of this could have been prevented *IF SHE HAD JUST POISIONED AZULON AND OZAI*

Iroh might have actually not become fire Lord because of how much of their Nation surrounds respect and honor and Iroh lost all of that once his failure siege that made him lose his metaphorical fire and all the respect that he had gotten up until that point if anything I feel like one of the children possibly azula would have been the new fire lord and since all she would have are mostly corrupted forces around her while her mother could have possibly tried pushing her into the right direction I don't think that would have been enough but this is all speculation on my front

Considering she only left to protect Zuko, it would’ve been obvious if shortly after Azulon gave the order of executing a child, Ozai was killed by poison. All this would’ve caused is Civil Unrest and within the Fire Kingdom. Ursa would’ve been discovered and executed for such a crime and Zuko/Azula would have been raised by Iroh. Iroh would’ve been the next in line for Fire Lord which would take a while to be crowned since Azulon would’ve lived a bit longer since Ozai can’t poison him now.

Actually they barely spent a month in the woods. Maybe a week even. You can understand this with the fact that Ursa left when Zuko was around 10-11 which places this event around 6 years before the show. And since Kiyi exists, and doesn't exist in here we can say for sure it was, in fact, a short time. (Not a year at all, basically.) I don't remember much but I'm fairly certain the comics told how much time they spent.

Honestly, I understand why she wanted to leave. and most people said that Ozai gave her an ultimatum, I honestly dont remember everything in the series but coming from a kid of a broken family, she is a bad mother but it's not like she have any choice either. Bit far to call her a boy's mum. Azula is shown to have sadistic tendencies from a young age, and her talent meant Ozai took an interest in her from early on and influenced her mindset more than Zuko. It was clear Azula was likely to go down a dark path no matter what she did, and Azula had less time with her before she was also banished simply because she was younger. She's not a perfect mum, but even if she was a perfect mum Azula would have still needed specialist psychological intervention.

Ursa has choose her path, for every Man and Women are responsible of their own destiny and actions. However what she done mark's her as fully Disgrace of being a Mother and Dishonor as being a Human being, When she decided to leave without her children that's where she decided to never be a mother for Zuko and Azula, for all fathers and Mothers care for their children. She became a disgrace by leaving Azula need for help from her father's wicked ways and leaving Zuko who needed a mother's love to bring balance to his mind and heart. And for being Dishonor as Human being, for she ask a spirit to replace her own face to be free with the price of removing her memory and by running away the danger instead facing that danger head-on. For what I know is that through all asian cultures Honor is very serious and if a person who done nothing to face or stop the evil, is that evil enough? People in this comment section need to actually read these comics instead of forming opinions based on YT Shorts. 1. Ursa never called Azula a monster. 2. Her choosing to forget her old life is not some evil or even super selfish decision. She was quite genuinely traumatized from being kidnapped and forced into the royal family, and since she was exiled and genuinely thought she couldn’t see her kids again, what’s the point of remembering that life? Hot take, this was fine. In fact the perfect solution. She's not selfish, why? Becuase she never wanted her kids in the first place. She never wanted to marry ozai. And if she didn't leave Zuko would have been killed. So it doesn't matter if she stayed she wouldn't have been a good mom becuase she would be forced to raise kids she never wanted, and it would have caused more issues than happiness. Lets face it Zuko and Azula would have never been happy even if she stayed. Lets face the facts here, her leaving didn't make them suffer more, her being there would have made them suffer. I get why she did it. I really do BUT this does slightly make her come off as selfish. I mean ozai is powerful and the firelord but she didn't even try another option.
