Stunning build on this aircraft. I will be picking this one up and using your video as a reference. My Uncle was a door gunner on the B24 in the Pacific back in WWII. Great job on this one.

Yep and it was a lot of fun. Even though it was 1/72, its still larger than the 1/48 fighters Ive built so that made some of the photo etch parts more manageable

I ,as a sheetmetal fabricator, was watching a doco on the manufacturing and assembly of early model B24's during the early years of WW2 on KZbin, 6 or so months ago. It was very,very interesting. Watching the way each individual part of the aircraft was formed.

@@ScaleModelAssassin I don’t have space for either of them but I’m going to make room haha. I’m going to give my dad one of them. I’m in the process of doing the waterslides in illustrator. The two photos of the nose art aren’t the best but I’ll work with them. I have all the call letters and all that info already too. Just need to make the decals for those too.

I just went surfing on you tube....my father was the Tail gunner on Strange Cargo when they were shot down. The photo at the end is of the Crew that was flying this B-24 when they were shot down over the Brenner Pass in Italy. It was April 8 1945. They were able to make a crash landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland and were interned there for the final six weeks of World War II. My father is the 5th one from the left on the second row. First row Left to right--Lt. Earl Hill Bombardier, Lt. Richard Turk Pilot, Lt. Vincent Hanrahan Co-Pilot, Lt. Paul McEnroe Navigator. Back row Lawton Kizer Gunner, Frank Kovacs gunner and was wounded, Otto Siemer, next is unknown, my Father , and unknown. All of the tail numbers and coloration are correct. They were in the 15th Air Force, 450th BG, 721 Sqd and were stationed in Manduria, Italy. It was this crews 13th mission. Always proud of these men....my father was the last one to pass away at age 93....and he was the oldest one in this group of young eagles.

That's awesome, I'm glad you were able to find this video. It's not a coincidence that I picked this specific plane because my grandfather was also on it and is in the picture at the end as well (Lawton). Its a fascinating story of their final mission and amazing they were able to make it to Switzerland. Thank you for confirming the markings, numbers, and colors are correct. I spent a lot of time looking at grainy black/white photos to make it as accurate as possible.

I did notice someone in the web mention the kit has 3 to 4 parts not correct to the actual bomber of cocktail hour. Atleast it not as bad as the 1/32 version in terms of wing profile out of shape.

Just beautiful! Have one dumb question; If you were to sell a model that you just built, ( like this one); with all the extras...Would you commonly sell it or not at all...(and for how much if you did?). I'm building MPC "Profile Series" B-29 Superfortress 1/72 at the moment, and there is somebody very interested in buying it..(But if you were to add the purchase of the model and all the materials plus the time invested...suddenly, this model I feel it is invaluable! or priceless to sell..I do not normally sell my models, and for sure I wouldn't want to sell this one .) Even though, that B-24 of yours, Is way beyond in quality, value and time invested than mine..I can imagine the tag price on it! ( sorry for the love letter; I'm an old guy..) Any thoughts on this? I love your channel very much and you are a fine artist!! Thanks much!
@ScaleModelAssassin
@ScaleModelAssassin 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you and its good to hear you enjoy my channel! Not a dumb question either. I havent sold one mainly because Im nervous that it would be damaged in shipping and also because no one has asked. For that reason I cant give you an actual number but I wouldnt sell for less than the materials cost. Ive given a few to family at just the material cost and of course friends would be discounted on labor. Id charge materials up front, give a labor estimate, and then charge that once I have the actual number of hours worked. Just figure out how much your time is worth, use minimum wage as a benchmark, and estimate how many hours it would take to build. Ive internally debated my hourly rate and still dont know what it would be lol. In your case, you could build 2 simultaneously so that you can keep one.

I'm defiantly impressed, you hit this one out of park! I'm really interested in those after market main wheel bays. I've got an old Matchbox Privateer that I've put off building it because I couldn't find a solution for those wretched wheel bays. What brand are they and where did you get them from?
@ScaleModelAssassin
@ScaleModelAssassin 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The wheel bays came as part of a larger set of photo etch parts. It was an exterior details set made by Eduard (#72492). Maybe youll be able to find the Privateer wheel bays as part of a larger set. Eduard has discontinued this set that I bought but I was able to find it on eBay a few months ago.

@ScaleModelAssassin

Thanks and when I built this one I wasn't as familiar with some of the alternative options like alclad. I've branched out with some of my paints and agree there's some smoother finishes.

So all total you invested what, about $200 for this? Question: Have you ever used Tamiya putty and if so how does it compare to the Vallejo putty you used here?
@ScaleModelAssassin
@ScaleModelAssassin 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty close, it ended up costing a little over $200. I recently bought a tube of Tamiya putty, but I havent had the opportunity to use it yet. Vallejo works really well for the small gaps and Im hoping that Tamiya will work a little better on some of the medium sized gaps.

@telescopereplicator
@telescopereplicator 6 жыл бұрын
I know, the number '5' for instance is different, but I know you have the software to make adjustments. This font is very useful, though. It comes close to, or is even spot on, to what we see on American airplanes, today. You will notice, as you build more and more models, that when you check reference photos, that many numbers (on the real aircraft) are often masked and painted by hand. Unfortunately, for us modelers, there is no "absolute standard", or a 100% accurate font. Sad, but we'll just have to live with it.
@ScaleModelAssassin

Yep, I was getting the feeling these were hand painted on the actual aircraft. There were plenty of slight variations between the various B-25's I was looking at.
