Nice, snappy overtakes on those first two vans. Horrendous tractor droppings on the opposite carriageway as you caught up the first one - the farmer wants shooting!

Thanks David. I guess it's difficult with the sticky clay soil, but it does at times look like they could try a little harder.

Great video! Thanks for the clear demonstration of the procedure. I am currently doing the Enhanced Rider Scheme and been unclear on the positioning aspect, I find it rarely gives a significantly improved view, But there were several examples there of how it can significantly lengthen your view. Thanks!

Good uploads as usual. Personally at 6:53 I'd have moved into P1 ready and at 6:56 I'd have gone, in P1 whilst he was at the end of moving forwards. No danger there then. ☺

Thanks, the problem is you don't know if he is going to shoot back, but I get what you are saying. I was positioned for the view ahead and away from left junction and rubbish road surface. Also I was leading several other bikes which tempered my decision also.

@@mikeroberts Once he'd committed and was still moving forwards, physics would have put paid to any "shooting" from the van but if I'd had others following I'd certainly have waited like you did. ☺

Good piece of courteous riding realising the van driver had made a slight mistake allowing them to correct themselves and holding back possible traffic for them to sort it out
@RoadcraftNottingham Жыл бұрын
@@markpercy4277 There's a difference between being courteous and making progress. There wouldn't have been any problem if Mike didn't have anyone with him to go as the van would have still been moving forwards. For me, As soon as the indicator came on I'd have adopted p1, slowed down and once the tail swing had been allowed for and the available gap was on a positive open, I'd have been gone. But I understand people read things differently.

Some really helpful advice there Mike, my only observation is around Van 2 and committing to the overtake from your side of the road. I was taught to only commit once on the other side of the road, checking for any issues ahead before accelerating and committing. Likewise, keeping further away from the vehicle you are overtaking, just in case they swerve for a pot hole you may not have been - keeping the safety bubble as great as possible.
@mikeroberts Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment/feedback. The key distinction with van #2 is that we are observing the road ahead of it as we go through the corner. So we've seen what's ahead. At the point I freeze frame mid-corner we have already seen all the road ahead. Good point about being wide of the vehicle you are overtaking. I watched both van overtakes again and I'm almost in the gutter of the oncoming lane in both.

Mike, I always like your relaxed style of riding and videos but am a bit unsure of the van 2 overtake. Although the road was clear, the van was passing several house drives on the left as you passed. Could you see these drives were clear and (given his speed) feel comfortable that the van wasn't going to pull out slightly ready to swing in to one of them?
@mikeroberts Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the query. Always good to comment/discuss. Yes, I was (and am) happy the overtake was ok. The van is accelerating away from the corner and the driver looking for me to pass. Most of the driveways are set back from the road and the shadows are falling left to right and no movement was visible across the field on approach to the corner (my bike mounted camera is at headlight height, not head height).

Hi Mike first of your videos I've seen. SUGGESTION if I may for a future vid. Always keen to see m/c safety videos. Consequently checked some of your earlier ones. Among tthem found 2 titled "what's around the corner...". What you failed to mention and is almost always overlooked and only gets a secondary mention in the Highway Code, is corners on single TRACK roads (not single carriageway). Essentially almost all guidance says " ...be able to stop in distance you can see to be clear..." . On single track roads this is WRONG! Should be "...able to stop in HALF THE DISTANCE YOU CAN SEE TO BE CLEAR...". In these instances vehicles travelling in opposite directions BOTH need reaction times and braking distance... I am sure you are fully aware but you have not said it and from my personal experience as a motorcyclist, cyclist and pedestrian on the many single track roads in Cornwall, many, many motorists are not. In your ..."what's around the corner Pt 2..." the very first clip is of an oncoming heavy on a single track road. It was a classic example of why "...stopping in half the distance..." is the correct advice.... Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment/thoughts. Yes, I haven't mentioned that extra bit. There's always more you could add to each video. Personally, I only apply that extra to really narrow roads. Sadly the rule assumes the other vehicle is behaving in a similar manner. Many don't, so do we quarter the distance to allow for the speeders, or, as I do, ride thinking "what if" and adjust speed based on all the information (and gut feel). It's a hard balance to get right and if we are honest we don't all get it perfect every time. You may like this video also kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHK1Y6ifYqhpi68

Van 3...you say he could have turned in this side of the grass triangle. Not according to the video, unless I am missing something. That side of the road has double broken white give way lines for traffic coming out of the junction.

Thanks for the question. Before I answer can you tell me why you think you can't cross a Give Way line?

Hi Mike, regarding the third van. I'm looking to take my IAM test in the next month, Im not sure I would have waited for the van to reverse a short toot on the horn would have alerted him to my presence, and a pass next to near side should have been enough to pass safely. Do you think I would have passed my test if I had pass that van before it started reversing? he also knew you were there as he thanked you earlier. thanks fro this video
@mikeroberts3 ай бұрын
A toot and suitable position would probably also be fine. Maybe a discussion point in the debrief. At the time I felt stopping was the better option. Hope your test goes fine.

In the first two overtakes you saw vans ahead and I noticed that you then accelerated to be behind them. I know it was your intent to show us how to overtake but if you had stayed at your initial speed perhaps none of those overtakes would have been necessary. One in eight collisions on overtakes ends in the death of a rider or pillion. The first consideration and the first question one should ask oneself before committing to any overtaking of moving vehicles is this.... 'DO I NEED TO' if the answer is 'NO ITS NOT' which in many case it is then don't overtake. There is a big difference between NEEDing too and WANTing too and in some circumstances riders make the wrong choice. However having decided that you were going to overtake in both instances you moved closer than the 2 second rule in order to facilitate an overtake and on the right hand bend you were closer' still. If that van had had to emergency stop or had become involved in an incident and come to an immediate halt then you would have had difficulty in braking, being leant over as you were. On the third instance, the van driver turned right, correctly as he could not have turned right before the grass verge as it was for oncoming traffic only with a double give way line for that other traffic travelling the other way. He stopped because his van was large and he could not have made the turn in one go without re positioning himself.

We've done the "do I need to overtake?" and closing up debate to death previously, but I'm interested in why you think the van couldn't turn right before the green triangle. Here's a link to the junction on Google maps. goo.gl/maps/LxJuGqzdrxJAgs5r9 Any links to relevant road marking regulations would be great.

@rcraven1013 Жыл бұрын
@@mikeroberts Yes I will keep on about safe stopping distances and there benefits and and of the too many death toll caused by poor overtakes and the taking of bends incorrectly until I am blue in the face or until others see that what is being instructed on doesn't work as well as it should. As regard the junction,from your picture on the video its obvious that there is only a double broken white line depicted one to slow for that junction turning left or right out of it. . There is no mid line painted for traffic turning right at that point as they have to pass the green island and turn right after it. So there is no way that one should turn right at that junction and into the face of oncoming traffic.
@mikeroberts Жыл бұрын
@@rcraven1013 You are completely incorrect about the green triangle junction. It's not a mini roundabout! You don't have to go round it like one. Look at the paint again. Why is there a give way line at the other end of the side you say you can't turn into? These type of junctions are all over the countryside. I'll ask again for you to point me to what road marking regulations say you shouldn't turn in there.
