At 5:40 you said that increasing the pressure and temperature decreases the density. Isn’t density directly proportional to pressure and indirectly to temperature? Wouldn’t the increase in pressure increase the density?
@NoBrainerTalk3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you make good points, and as you say it is the temperature increase which decreases the density, so in effect the density decrease from temperature increase is countering the density increase that pressure increase offers, so the intercooler is there to decrease the temperature of the pressurised air to make the air denser.

Is there any information known about blow-off or bypass valve used on the B58TU engines?
@NoBrainerTalk5 ай бұрын
1st gen B58 and B58TU1 engines have an electrical wastegate valve (so regulate the exhaust side of the turbo to control boost), but B58TU2 engines seem to have a blow-off valve (so regulate the intake side of the turbo to control boost) . The reason for this change is unclear, but if I had to guess, venting excess exhaust gases vs venting intake air to regulate boost might have some impact on emissions. With the 48V mild hybrid assistance system as standard on the TU2, the B58TU2 might afford to sacrifice some minor performance from the engine itself to achieve reduced emissions. This is pure guess work.

Is the B58TU better then the Gen 1 B58. Im thinking buying a 2019 X3 M40i with the Gen1 B58 motor. Any input anyone on that? Thanks. Great vidoe brother.
@NoBrainerTalkАй бұрын
In stock form, the 6-port B58TU1 with 382hp (if it also has 48V mild-hybrid assist, which some B58TU1 cars have) is arguably a better performance engine than the 1st gen B58 with 340hp. The 1st gen is simpler and arguably more over-engineered and likely to be more reliable, especially after modifications, than the 2nd gen. Both generations are exceptionally good engines with alot of upgrade potential and it's likely you will be happy with either. It all depends on budget and plans. Of course when buying used you also need the previous owner(s) to have taken care of the engines. Hope this helps...

Thank you for sharing this. I wish to ask for some assistance please. I M about to buy a used M140i 2018 with 21,000 miles. Anything I should look out for? Also if there a way of checking engine oil level ?. Thank you
@NoBrainerTalk3 жыл бұрын
Hi, here's a link with some advice. www.whatcar.com/bmw/m140i/hatchback/used-review/n18884/advice The standard advice when buying a used car applies of course. Also check the coolant in the expansion tanks (known issue that the B58 loses coolant) as well as signs for any coolant loss in the engine (dried coolant residue), and check for rattles from the exhaust (know issue that stock exhaust can rattle). Check if the radiators (intercooler and auxiliary) have stone guards, and if they don't check the radiators for damage and leaks.
@acz883 жыл бұрын
You can check engine oil levels under vehicle status in iDrive. Mileage is low but still check to see if oil changes were done. Future problems could involve carbon build ups, leaks from valve cover, cracking of plastic charge pipe, thermostat and water pump failure. These are minor repairs if you get them done at non-dealer mechanic.

What is the Max rpm of the turbo in the b58 engine ? 250 k rpm ?
@NoBrainerTalk3 жыл бұрын
I don't know, someone would need to install special sensors to determine that (on a Stage 2+ tuned engine that is achieving the maximum power possible from the stock turbo), or perhaps it can be deduced mathematically from the power output of such engine. I doubt we will ever know unless we happen to speak to the development engineers who designed and tested it.

Does the M340i uses the B58TU?
@NoBrainerTalk2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if it's a G20/G21 (M340i) then it has a B58TU and if it's a F30/F31/F34 (340i) then it has 1st gen B58.

B58 dosnt have a mass air flow sensor at the airbox. it's a air inlet temp sensor. B58 uses speed density. Not mass airflow.
@NoBrainerTalk5 ай бұрын
You are not correct because the B58 uses Mass Airflow Sensor Part Number 13628605565 (made by Bosch). It might also measure or help the ECU calculate intake temperatures and gather other data.
@JTa-l6y5 ай бұрын
@NoBrainerTalk may depend on gen 2 or 3 b58 as I have a supra with the gen 3 b58 and it shows as a air inlet temp sensor. There is also a variation of a 2 port cylinder head and a 6 port cylinder head depending on year the car was built.

@NoBrainerTalk Жыл бұрын
Yes it is. This means the exhaust manifold feeds the air into the turbine in two separate streams so that each cylinder exhaust gases interfere as little as possible with each other (resulting in improved scavenging of the exhaust gases and less impeded flow into the turbine).
