Have done far too many Audi, BMW, and Mercedes trans fluid/filter changes. Oh what fun lol. Just recently replaced an auto trans on a B5 A4 Quattro. What a beast of a transmission
@JerZeyFiveOh3 жыл бұрын
How do you do a complete fluid change on Tiptronic Quattro car? The above video shows that he took out only 3.5qtz when the transmission can hold up to 9.5qtz. Any suggesstions?
@audimotive3 жыл бұрын
To do a complete flush you need like 12 quarts. Through the transmission lines, one side sucking in the new fluid while the other spits out the rest. There are transmission flush machines that do this. Most of the fluid is in the torque converter
@DaytonCarCare3 жыл бұрын
@@JerZeyFiveOh You could do a flush by taking the fluid lines off the radiator and have one large bucket of new fluid and one empty for the old then run the engine. The pan only holds 3-4 quarts so when you drain it that's all that comes out. There is more in the trans and well as in the torque converter. You could drain the 3-4 quart, refill, run the car, and repeat a couple times but your mixing with old fluid. Better to use the bucket method or pay someone to do it with a machine. I ended up converting my car to a manual, was tired of dealing with automatics. lol
@audimotive3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is what I was talking about. But you need a way to close the lines and let the fluid circulate in the transmission to get the new fluid in the torque converter
@DaytonCarCare3 жыл бұрын
@@audimotive Just make sure the supply line going to new fluid is secured in the bucket that's it. (The other line will dump old fluid in the other bucket ). When it's close to empty stop engine. Reconnect lines and check level. Fill with a hand pump on trans fill hole what it needs. Make sure the car is level when checking trans fluid level.

There will be a considerable amount of fluid left in the tork converter and it is best to leave that be. Flushing it may open a can of worms you don't want to open and that remaining fluid might just save your trans from misbehaving.

really excellant video. Very informative. But can i just clarfiy one thing? When you fill for the first time and your reach the level, you say you should start the car and run it through the gears to circulate it and warm up the oil. Do you do that with the filler plug still out? Or do you have to pop that back temporarily before you stop and do the second fill? thanks for your patience.
@audimotive4 жыл бұрын
If you keep the plug out, you will know if you have filled enough the first time. At the correct temperature the fluid will start dripping out. If it doesn't, then the plug is already off to top off fluid. But if you turn off the car, make sure you put the filler plug back on first

I've heard good things about a Lucas transmission additive. I would do a filter/fluid change and add a quart of Lucas. If that doesn't solve your problem, probably need a new transmission. Could be a valve body or torque converter issue, but a low mileage used transmission would probably be cheaper than the time and labor for a tech to diagnose and rebuild. Just my opinion

SO recently I noticed that my transmission was leaking and the other day I car broke down and the gear selector-indication on the dash lit up every gear [PRND]. I got the car towed. Do you think I'll be able to revive the transmission for a bit or do you think it is dead?
@audimotive7 жыл бұрын
+Anthony B. Leaking, while not good, probably won't cause the transmission to die. As long as you don't get too low or run out of fluid. The PRND lights could mean a bad TCU or a bad gear selector switch. Depending on the mileage and condition of the fluid, it might be worth finding a replacement transmission. I'd check the fluid and scan the car, see why the PRND lights are on. That will show a code

I also noticed there is a separate filter that goes along side the trans behind the driver wheel. I might change out both, car is at 192k.. I have seen people spray loctite on the cardboard gasket.. perhaps that's what the green residue was you cleaned with the razor? Not sure if you've seen those type loctite.. it's in spray can, it isn't gasket maker.. I've seen the red, which is permanent I think, and perhaps for high temperature, there are different variations of the loctite. Not sure which is appropriate for this procedure..
@audimotive8 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, it really means a lot. I have not heard of this loctite gasket stuff. I'm not sure if that's what it was, as the new gasket was basically green paper also. As far as your car, it looks like doing a fluid flush is pretty much the same, but changing the filter is way different. The repair manual says there are 2 filters. The inside one needs the transmission to be taken apart to replace. The other one doesn't, but it is way more expensive.

@audimotive7 жыл бұрын
+Don't Touch My Oreos I'd have to assume that they come with extra so you can do a flush. Fill it, run it, drain some and repeat. This will dilute the dirty fluid that remains in the torque converter. At the dealer we had a flush machine that needed 12 liters to flush the system. You could do that yourself as well. Just keep in mind that the fluid needs to be at a certain temperature to set the proper level, which becomes harder to get as the car is running to cycle the fluid.
