Baby Cardinal birds growing from hatchlings to fledglings. I fed them with the exact all baby birds hand feeding formula. I took a few pictures every day for about 2 weeks to see how quick they grow. They were really fun to watch. They are currently living wild in my backyard.

I found one in the middle of the road two months ago. Reluctantly I took him home and fed him dried cat food soaked in water and wet cat food. Moved him into worms and crickets. Made a “hunting pan “ so he learned to find his food. Finally released him. He was gone all day and then came back. I’ve released him 15-20 times. He’s sitting on my shoulder as I type this. We have a good sized sunroom and one of his fans gave him a $300 cage. The doors of the cage are open all day. We have a large flock of Cardinals and he will try and join them but he always comes back to us. If he stays that’s good. If he leaves that’s ok too.

Means he imprinted on you and it's not good to release him bc he more than likely will be a meal to something bc he doesn't know how to get away from danger. That's why his parents watch after him several weeks after he flys the nest.

My little dog just found a baby cardinal who's nest fell out of the tree. I put it in a bird house and put it in the tree. Mom and Dad are hanging around and they know where the baby is. I haven't seen them go inside the house though. I sure hope they take care of it. They're such beautiful bird's 🥰 Thanks for sharing. Maybe I should soak some cat food just in case.

@@pamelacolvin1417 please call a local bird rehabilitater. Cardinals will not go in the bird house. If it's fully feathered it will be ok to put it in a open container full of grass and make a hole like bed for it like a natural nest and nail it to a tree where the mom and dad is. Taking care of a wild bird is against the law especially a cardinal.

I " rescued" a baby cardinal this morning. Checked with the national wildlife rescue. Taking a baby in is kidnapping from the mother bird. The mother and father put a lot of love and hard work into their babies. You stole that mother & father cardinal's babies. Releasing my "rescue" cardinal at dawn tomorrow. I'd never kidnap a mother's babies.

I found a baby bird tonight, and brought it home before the neighborhood cats had lunch with it. I had nothing on hand to feed it, so I warmed up a little bit of skim milk. This crazy bird loves it. Do they ever get full though? I think it's a male bird... 'cause it eats like a guy. LOL Wish me luck. Right now, I'm feeding it a mix of sugar water, egg yolk and water. It likes the milk better.

Exact hand feeding formula is 30% protein. Wild baby birds need 70% protein, therefore they are fed insects only as nestlings. A diet low in protein can lead to metabolic bone disease which may not show up until after the young have fledged the nest. They usually do not survive their first winter and if they do, they have weakened immune systems that make them vulnerable to parasites and other diseases. Permitted wildlife rehabilitators are trained to provide proper diets and housing.

I am so glad I found this video. I am currently caring for a baby cardinal after an unsuccessful attempt at putting him back in his nest. He is doing great, except he seems to favor one of his legs and gets it stuck in his wing, he works it out himself. That foot seems very uncoordinated, but looks just like the other and it doesn't seem to hurt him. Were yours uncoordinated like that?

I watched the video because we just had three cardinal chicks, raised in a nest by our kitchen window, fly the coop so to speak and land five feet below on the ground. Their mother tried desperately to ward them off but they seemed determined to move on without the ability to fly. Darkness fell and the next morning there was no sign of the three chicks. The next day the mother cardinal (who did all the work, by the way) and her mate frantically flew around our yard and the neighbor's yard in a vain search. We have several neighborhood cats and I fear the chicks did not escape them, but I hope to be wrong.

Also there is a reference to calling a wildlife rehabilitator for baby birds. They are often extremely busy and may never call back. And I don’t have any proof of this but I have heard that since babies often die and require a lot of work, some people feed them to hawks and eagles. The person who told me that has done a great deal in rescuing birds and I am merely passing this on. I pray it’s wrong or exaggerated. But rest assured, they are a lot of work.

@dawnsutton They are cardinals for sure, I see them at my bird feeders every day. A male and a female. The male is just starting to get his crest and red feathers. I named him Archimedes (like the owl from "The Sword in the Stone") and the female Architeuthis (like the giant squid). I'll try and take some pictures and maybe add them in to my video if I can.

My nephews just found what we believe to be a cardinal fledgling in the street. It almost was hit by a car. They brought it over here and we gave them a birdcage to keep it in until he has grown a little more. We put bird seed and water and a nest in there for it. I'm really hoping it survives.

I'm a licensed songbird rehabber in Tulsa, Ok. I've raised many hatchlings/nestlings/fledglings including cardinals, jays, woodpeckers, phoebes, cuckoos, etc....It is NEVER a good idea to try to raise a songbird (or baby raptor) on your own. These birds have specific dietary needs; Exact given to most songbirds ends with metabolic bone disease, etc. I've received many baby birds which had been "raised" by a well meaning member of the public, and the damage done was irreversible. Find a rehabber!

They eat bugs, caterpillars, grubs...during the day mom and dad feed them every 10-20 minutes. I know. I have a cam on a nest. Mom grinds them up real good. Look on the web for your state's wildlife dept and see what they recommend because, obviously, you can't be hunting for bugs every 10-20 minutes.

Ok to the question as to when I moved my little fellow to crickets and worms: I started during the second week. At first they were less food than toys to him and I had to force feed them to him. But eventually he got the idea. However the night before I planned to release him I realized he didn’t know where to find them so I kept him an extra week and made him hunt for his meals by putting his prey in a large pan with grass, leaves and branches in it to simulate the ground. It took some prodding but he got the idea. Also I introduced him to grasses, seeds, flowers and fruits he would find in my yard and he loved those. There’s a great deal more to this story and I’m writing a book due to an overwhelming number of people who followed his story. It will be titled MY LIFE WITH ROSCOE: MY CARDINAL SIN. I already have a number of orders in place. Also I have tons of photos and videos to share. My email is chipk@bellsouth.net Put Roscoe Pix in the subject line to ensure I read your message.

thanks for this, I have just found a cardinal nestling that appears to be about 4 days old or so, eye's haven't opened, flight feathers are just in, no tail feathers at all. I have a question about the feeding, I've not had many birds and although I keep Exact on hand (for orphaned squirrel pinkies) I've no idea how the bird's natural feeding movements work. Does the nestling thrust forward when it needs food dispensed? Also, can you see the open craw when they're ready to receive the formula

sorry to say but those were baby cowbirds you raised:( the frequently lay in cardinals nest thus i can see why you thought they were cardinals. baby cardinals have a crest, reddish brown feathers and no flecks of black down the belly. cowbirds have an insect like raspy begging cry, cardinals have a metallic high pitched chirp as their begging call, just like adult cardinals have.
