Cape Cross rescue day - the rescuers move from one entangled seal to the next, often with only a few seconds to spare between rescues. One particular seal stands out: Baby Hulk! They had spotted him a few days earlier, but they were unable to catch him. He earned his name because of the colour of his entanglement. He did not have a chance against Denzil "The Flash". A real battle between superheros at Cape Cross on this day. As always, everybody wins! 🦭

Frances: There exists scientific evidence supporting the notion that intelligent animals are able to learn and understand human speech. British research, for example, concludes that dogs can understand human vocabulary up to about 50--200 words. That research included brain MRI. There is much older evidence from apes/monkeys. Animal psychologists assert that animals understand an animal communication system of gestures. Animal psychologists assert than non- human animals lack the anatomy to produce speech. Seals obviously have a vocabulary of grunts and bellows. There are times when OCN team running seems to motivate the seals to run WITH them rather than running AWAY FROM the humans. Notice that when the OCN team penetrates into the herd, seals continue to run WITH and even behind the humans in the direction the humans are running. When humans come abreast of seals, the seals don't turn 90 degrees or 180 degrees to avoid the people. It frequently looks as though most of the seals react to people running as though people see a danger to be fled that the seals don't see. 'Stampede' is in the animal kingdom language of gestures/behavior. These seals have seen for themselves that this OCN team does not slaughter and devour seals. As seals, these animals calm down about 90% of the times they are mounted. We can reasonably interpret this in 2 ways. Either the seals interpret it as sexual behavior or they understand they are receiving help to escape from the entanglement pain and inconvenience. When the team crawls or walks toward or into the herd, the seals moving away can be interpreted as yielding territory to a different species OR as fear OR as both. We actually see relatively little seal aggression and lots of seal defensive behaviors. We do see some very clear seal behaviors of fear. We see powerful seal behaviors in pain avoidance. Many times they struggle when their wounds are touched or manipulated. The seals THREATEN to bite more often than following through. Actual biting endangers seals in that any bleeding in the ocean can be a shark lure. Seals that draw blood are a general danger to the herd. These seals might be reacting to the black nets--because these are NOT animals and are clearly capturers. The more complex level of the human/seal communications is WHAT the seals interpret the relationship between the humans and the entrapments to be. They know nets/boats/fishermen to be rivals for fish. They know the OCN team master the manipulation of entanglements. Seals SEE that. It is said that human 6 year olds have mastered basic physics. Some if those seals have the brain size of a human 6 year old. So we can give them some credit for being able to have some kinds of thoughts.

I swear Wally speaks to them more than ever, seeing Denzil sprint off, and the joy in in Naude voice as he identifies to Tony a seal they spotted before, and knowing they don't have to worry about it, and Tony sprinting off. After all this time watching, I still can't comprehend the agility to identify those in trouble from such distances, which so much movement going on.

You guys are so funny sometimes eg Wally: Do you want to sit in my lap? But the work you and the OCN Team do is very serious and highly specialised. Without you these beautiful animals would not stand a chance against the horrific amount of waste in their natural habitat. The different types of entanglements you're finding up and down the coast is worrying. Obviously the bucket the other day was a one off. As are some of the other bizarre things that appear around the seals necks like the shirts. The continual finds of gill net and snoek line ard the most worrying because there's so much of it. But the recreational fishing line is the next most worrying because it is so thin and causes horrific injuries.

FYI - Leatherman is coming out with a new version of the "Raptor" tool. The current version is going to be renamed the "Raptor Rescue", and the new version is going to be called the "Raptor Response". According to one report, on the Raptor Response the strap cutter and glassbreaker are removed, and the O2 wrench is relocated to the handle. They are 1 gram lighter in weight, and have what was described as “more comfortable handles.” Losing the strap cutter would be bad for OCN, but this is only one report - might be wrong. Release is supposed to be in the next few days - less than a week.

That square black piece looks like the gasket that's put between two pieces of machinery to make a joint airtight but removable for repair to the unit. I've seen similar black pieces around machine shops, but I'm not a mechanic so my guess would be it's part of a boat engine. The gaskets themselves become less efficient over time and are replaced.

That whole situation looked intense. The rush of it plus the energy of the seals running and the crashing of the water. I can only imagine.. great job🤓🙌

You are all doing a wonderful job saving these seals. I wish people would be mindful of the ocean creatures we share our world with.💙 Thankyou

I think Wally (?) is so 'ggggrillerig' / squeamish with those dreadful wounds (as I am via my screen!) that he'd rather have his hands over the hazardous mouth zone than be the one Hurting-to-Help pull the strangling-slicing stuff out the wound. Bless him! Please send him an extra big thanks from me for keeping on doing what is probably toe-curling, stomach churning and quite emotionally draining for him XXXXXX

Today's cases show it can be any object that can make a loop. We need to be extra mindful to cut up any piece of trash that can make a loop. Thank you, team OCN.

When you said, "it's baby hulk" I thought you said it's Ernie Els 😁😁 and I'm wondering what sort of golf paraphernalia this poor seal's got itself entangled in 😂😂

I think it's so cute how the seals keep trying and trying to run away. They're so cute!

You all have such amazing skills at identifying entangled seals at long distance, and spotting tags in a crowd of fleeing animals. And as for Denzil the rocket . . . wow!
