Are these the only breed of monkey that fosters babys? I don't see this in others types of monkeys, or I haven't seen it yet.

@@stacyhoefflin no, macaques and other breeds will sometimes take an orphan. They also kidnap babies that aren't theirs as well. Some are good babysitters. With the tiny marmosets, the males attend the birth of their children, and even feed them solid food when they are ready. Macaques are notorious kidnappers. Sometimes holding onto an infant until it dies from starvation. Even male macaques have been known to steal babies and hold onto them until they die of dehydration or starvation.

She is a essential for a foster program to work and the survival of these babies, she is an amazing teacher to the younger generations and you know she tells all the females, where you can get babies at but I love they way Missed Gold says "not these babies tho, These ones are mine! No they dont climb to ask lol. That isnt what i meant though. What i am talking about is something you usually see when the mothers begin refusing to let them nurse every time the baby wants it. What happens is the baby will climb up and act distressed so that mom will want to protect them and comfort them which means that mom will allow them to nurse. I have seen so many babies do this i was just noticing that what she was doing looked similar.

From watching the videos, it seems the males get vasectomies at 2.5 years of age. Kyle mentioned they do this instead of removing the testicles because the size of them (testicles) in nature is also a indicator of their status in the troope, even though they can't father a child.

@arizonasunflowers5226
@arizonasunflowers5226 3 жыл бұрын
But they do sometimes! I remember watching one rescue group for macaques would put available orphans in a clothes basket 1 day or 2 a week, and certain moms would come to see if they wanted to adopt them. Also, some moms actually had a nursing baby but would adopt one and let it nurse and visitors thought that she’d had twins. So, it does happen at rescues, but probably not in the wild.

Dixie is so young she just wants to eat, sleep and complain????? I'll be 70 next year and that's all I WANT to do! Honestly, I admire all the volunteers' self control the way they handle/don't handle the babies! I'd just want to kiss & cuddle 'em. However, that would be defeating the purpose of getting them ready to live their best lives! They'd be much better off if I cleaned up their messes and fixed their food.

Isn't climbing up somewhere and then freaking out something they usually do when they want to nurse, and are trying to get their mom to come and get them? I wonder if she would have calmed down if someone took a bottle to her, though you cant really do that because then they would all learn that as a reward for that behavior, but still I am curious. Maybe it is an instinctual behavior, and it is just less frequent there because of the lack of lactating moms. Sorry just letting the old brain wander a bit I guess lol.
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 5 жыл бұрын
no, they don't climb to ask for milk lol. If they want milk they just go up to mom and drink it. Same with these babies, they know exactly where their bottles are and if they want milk they go to them. When you watch the wild troops, the babies will just have freak out moments then go running to their mom, usually something scares them or they get stressed. But they don't typically climb to complain. That would be really strange and counter productive to accomplishing anything cause its easier for mom to get you on the ground than up in a tree.

Okay, Kyle, I have a question... I’ve been wondering, when a Mom “adopts” a baby, what happens when the baby NEEDS milk? Does the “MOM” allow the baby to come back to the milk feeding cage or does Mom keep the baby out in the “wild” or in the enclosure and baby doesn’t get milk when it wants/needs it? I’ve been wondering how that works!!!

Is the thrush these guys get the same kind (candida) that we get? I had thrush a couple of years ago due to taking a wide spectrum antibiotic along with a steroid to cure pneumonia. The combo wiped out my normal oral flora and resulted in a white and very itchy tongue! It looked like I had a white mouse in my mouth!

FilmerOfBobcats Yeah from what I've seen from past seasons, it's looks like the same thrush you see in human babies. My nephew got thrush and that's what ended breastfeeding for my sister, he refused to latch on after that. I guess the pain of it was too strong of a memory for him to overcome, so my sister pumped and bottle fed him after that.

It sure looks like the other mom surrogate is uninterested in the baby at all ...pacing around looking for a way out of the enclosure...wondering if HAWK would be a better more interested surrogate?
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 5 жыл бұрын
Nah. Usually if you see her pacing its cause there's something going on elsewhere that she is reacting to, sure maybe she wants to get out in that moment to go investigate or something, but that's not important, its just her being a monkey and acting on instinct, if we let them in and out every time they got a little anxious or curious about a passing bandit we'd never have a single mom in an enclosure. If she didn't like being inside, she wouldn't come in every single baby season to stay with babies for months on end. You have to remember you are only seeing snippets of reality from a very particular angle, there is always more going on in the background that you might not be aware of. Hawk would be a horrible surrogate. LOL. You're concerned that a monkey is nervous inside an enclosure, but you're suggesting we trap a monkey who lives free of any enclosure and force her to stay in an enclosure, no thanks. Plus you never know how Hawk would react once she got into the enclosure. I understand it's fun to hypothesize, but our program is built on 25 years of experience, you gotta give us at least a little credit for knowing what we're doing.

Why did you not let Hawk take a baby? She obviously has the yearning and you said she's been a mom many times. How do you decide who is allowed to take the babies? I realize this was old but was curios. I really like the show. You all do wonderfully with these tiny orphans. It's a selfless job and the babies would never make it without you. I have always taken orphaned babies (squirrels, kittens, dogs, birds and deer!) in when I would find them. I am proud to say, all of them made it except three tiny featherless baby birds whose entire nest was blown from a tree. There is so much thought that you have put into your facility. It really surprised me though, to see the nursing station for the babies. The cold chickenwire that holds the bottles for the babies to nurse is terrible. It looked like the raw edges were not covered woth anything. Those bottles should be surrounded by something soft , fuzzy, warm and inviting. That is part of their bonding. It doesn't seem to mimic mom at all. The bottles should allow them different positions to nurse at as well. Anyway, I'd like to donate to your center. Keep up the excellent work.

I think Babba Cool are ready to be out, but I don't know about Maysie. She look like she's still young. I like Pakko, hes so cute, heck all of the baby look so cute and adorable. Also why their face turn black as they get older?

They are not allowed in with the babies. Their role is to protect the troop and they rarely interact with babies, so they're there, but there is no context for them in the stories I'm telling.

They go to the cages with the bottles in them for milk. After they leave the intro enclosures they will have the feeding cages accessible for milk and the grownups cant get in to steal the milk

Thus the beauty of their bottle cages idea. The bottle cages make it so once the monkey is too old to NEED the milk, it can't get at it. Nor can any greedy adults get the baby's milk. Nor could one greedy baby stop others from nursing. (as we saw!) Weening is painless, drama free and automatic! A supply of milk that's uninteruptable and all the loving the foster's can give. A rich 3d playing area. All put together it's a recipe for healthy sane well adjusted monkeys. My hat is off to who ever thought up the bottle cage idea. Huzzah!

I believe that Kyle said that the babies stay w/ their foster Moms in the intro enclosure for 3 months, at which time they’re released out into a troop. At 3 months, foster Moms are more willing to allow the babies to roam away from them in order to access and drink from the milk bottles inside the special cages, which they need for a full year.

Sheila Lewis-Lorum I believe Kyle said before that they are “fixed” so they can’t have their own babies which is what gives them the overwhelming urge to foster the orphan babies. But, there are some troops they call “bandits” and they have their own Biological children occasionally. I guess the bandits are, for lack of a better word, more “wild” as far as human contact. Wow I’ve been watching this channel longer than I thought 😳

the females can still have babies but the males are vasectomised, so if an non-vasectomised male is on the loose, females can have biological babies that's why bandits still have biological ones, it's harder to get a record of all snipped males

@@ronaldpittman1307 Sorry Ronald, but that's just not how it works. It doesn't matter how you treat them or how much of a "family" member they are, they are still a wild animal and taking them away from the wild and their own kind is cruel and unnatural. Vervets are social animals as you can see from my videos and they require a large family environment, trees, ability to roam and forage and a wide variety of foods and nutrients in their diet. You cannot just leave them at home when you go away, and they are not like any animal that is bread to be a pet, it's just not in their psyche. Plus they become possessive, jealous and aggressive and you will get bitten and they will attack other people who they see as lower ranked or challenging you. Also keeping a social animal in captivity generates strange behavioral issues that can eventually lead to physical ailments and traumas. No matter what you might think or have heard anyone who tells you a monkey can be kept as a pet or is a good pet is wrong and miss-informed and cannot call themself a conservationist and does not have the animals best interest at heart.
