I'll be honest, this is one of my favourite scenes of the series for another reason. Because it is one of the few to really show how B5 is actually designed, like a proper O'Neill Cylinder.

Yes, indeed. But you know an O’Neill Cyclinder becomes easily unstable at slightly interferences. That explosion would have been resulting in an a resonance disaster, ending in a fatal catastrophe. Whereas a Stanford Torus automatically stabilises itself like a bicycle wheel, de facto it is gigantic Gyroscope and that G word is just a very scientific expression for exactly that principle. But for sure at incredibly high stability. 😉

@@rolandrickphotography Its mechanically spun by those rings. I probably has something creating a counterspin with equal mass or higher velocity in the same rings. it could handle a small explosion. If it couldn't, it couldn't handle daily foot traffic either which would generate far more vibration than a single explosive event along it's spine. Even a Stanford Torus or a Bernal Sphere requires corrections and or counter spinning mechanisms to maintain stability. It could also be like a McKendree Cylinder and have a nested cylinder inside another. Or a Lewis Cylinder that spins inside a counter spinning shell. It probably also has stability thrusters. Many options.

If Kosh only implanted part of his mind (and not his body) into Sheridan, why did he appear like a tentacled being when he left Sheridan and attacked Ulkesh? That would not be logical, therefore I conclude that they are mostly pure energy and only use a physical form when they have to. The only speculation left is whether the tentacled form is their original physical form they evolved from or a deliberately chosen "attack form" as I put it.

I lent this series to my roommate in University. He was slow through season 1, and kinda "meh" about the series. He went through Season 2 slowly as well, until about halfway through. Then he did the latter half of the second season and seasons 3-5 in about a week, even skipping class to watch B5. I lent it to another friend after that, and watching the "Messages From Earth" trio with him helped me get over my breakup. TV & movies that develops great depth of personality of the characters without the obese glares of "techno babble " like Star Trek TNG was the worst offender imho, and then develops the line of overwhelming evil being defeated by virtuos & heroic good automatically becomes the stuff of legends; i.e. Lord of the Rings.

@christosvoskresye
@christosvoskresye 7 жыл бұрын
I know they had a limited effects budget, but everyone on that train moved exactly like in 1 g. There's a reason astronauts hopped on the moon: its gravity did not pull them down in time for the next foot to meet the ground, as on earth. How fast one can WALK (as opposed to running or hopping, so that at some point both legs are off the ground) depends on gravity. And, of course, the tangential speed of the station needed to be more than 60 mph to produce 1 g where the others were, but the basic idea is still correct.

christosvoskresye. Yes the moonwalkers around the obelisk had the same problem in 2001 as well. Hard to get actors to perform low gravity and directors often don't quite get it. Howard's, Apollo 13 was partially filmed in the Vomit Comet for that reason. Best I've seen on a film set was UFO and that was a year after we'd all seen Armstrong and Aldrin. Even they could only hint at it while mimicking the moves.

Didn't you notice everyone holding on to objects taking slow deliberate step and Sheridan "pulling" himself down into the seat?! It's not perfect but it is clues you in that it is low gravity and they have to use poles and such to move in a controlled manner instead of bouncing.

@@yehiahuzayyin7972 I do see your point and my argument to that is you do not have to venerate/believe in something to have knowledge of it. Vir confirmed that Molari was essentially an atheist but doesn't mean that he wouldn't have knowledge of Centauri deities and other beings (Angels) that may have served them. All of the people/beings/species who witnessed the explosion and Sheridan falling, saw Kosh's energy form but each race saw (what I believe) something that Vorlons had conditioned them to see. I do not believe that Kosh would have somehow been invisible to Molari when he left his encounter suit as everyone at least saw his glowing energy and I believe Molari would have seen (at least) that too. Besides, even 25 years later, I still like to question things like how much the Vorlons may have influenced the Centauri. My opinion, but I'd enjoy hearing a reply.

@kalinystazvoruna8702
@kalinystazvoruna8702 5 жыл бұрын
@@whattheflyingfuck... Actually, the concept of a rotating space station is much older than Carl Sagan's idea. "Konstantin Tsiolkovsky wrote about using rotation to create an artificial gravity in space in 1903. Herman Potočnik introduced a spinning wheel station with a 30-meter diameter in his Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums (The Problem of Space Travel). He even suggested it be placed in a geostationary orbit. The O'Neill cylinder (also called an O'Neill colony) is a space settlement concept proposed by American physicist Gerard K. O'Neill in his 1976 book The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space. An O'Neill cylinder would consist of two counter-rotating cylinders. The cylinders would rotate in opposite directions in order to cancel out any gyroscopic effects that would otherwise make it difficult to keep them aimed toward the Sun. Each would be 5 miles (8.0 km) in diameter and 20 miles (32 km) long, connected at each end by a rod via a bearing system. They would rotate so as to provide artificial gravity via centrifugal force on their inner surfaces." (from Wikipedia) This last design is what Babylon 5 is, and as you can see, it was not Carl Sagan who proposed this.

The rotation of the cylinder provides artificial gravity via "centrifugal" force. Have you ever been on the "Wall of Death" / rotating barrel ride at a fairground? Exactly the same principle but on a much larger scale! This is also why Sheridan is almost weightless on board the centre-spindle metro car, because that force is close to zero near the centre.

@Derrick Austin -- That should not undo generations of genetic tampering. No, I think something else must be at play. Maybe the Centauri psychic abilities have nothing to do with the Vorlons. After all, if such a thing is possible, why should it arise only once? And if they already had some degree of psychic ability, maybe they could not be manipulated in quite the same way. Or perhaps, as iona2225 suggests, the Centauri gods were simply not anthropomorphic. Neither are angels in Christianity, by the way; they are pure spirits who are naturally invisible, are described in visions as looking very strange indeed (with more than 2 wings and/or with more than one face), and tend to look human (no wings) when they interact with people. Maybe the Centauri view is somewhat similar, without the overlay of Hallmark and "Touched by an Angel".

Londo's race didn't have a connection to the light their connection was to the Shadows so they would never had an Angelic form light being saving them throughout their history guiding them to do the Right and Proper thing when the time came or in their everyday lives. G'kar saw his Angelic version of Kosh as well and G'kars race was nearly wiped out by Londos race . He lied, by the way. Later in the series, it's been shown what vorlons look like when they don't bother with mental projections, and centauri weren't influenced by vorlons, so Londo must've been seeing that true form. It would also be in his character to react this way after hearing what everyone saw and clearly noticing it wasn't what he has seen, but not having a believable answer conjured up yet.

This is a bit on the ‘Spin Doctor’ side of things …. But the Holy Scriptures says that when the angels appeared before and human individual or plural individuals … that they appeared in the ‘wink of an eye’ and were wearing ‘shiny raiment’ . They were called tall and statuesque, extremely beautiful and hard to miss or continually look at. They were amazed , mesmerized, enthralled and confused …. to the point of falling to their knees and doing abeyance… to which the angels replied ….”No no, do not do that… get up … you are not supposed to worship us, we all worship God Almighty together!…” . I don’t believe there was any discussion or comment about angels having ‘wings’ … feathered , or gossamer…. They gave Gods message and left. Period. They didn’t ‘hang out’, or play Bridge, Canasta , Checkers, Bingo, attend banquet, sing camp fire songs like Kumbaya My Lord…. or any else of such doings … going’s on , or other sundry such ilk….they gave ‘The Word’ and left …. In ‘The Wink If An Eye’….

I think Londo actually did see the vorlon's true form, because: a) it has been shown later what vorlons really look like when they don't bother with mental projections (the Kosh vs Ulkesh fight scene in the 4th season) b) being an exceptionally clever person, he couldn't've missed the stories, and couldn't've overlooked the discrepancy between this and what he has seen and finally, c) he didn't have enough time to cook up a passable answer, so he just said something as innocuous as possible given his obviously distraught and shaken state Plus, later, when vorlons have come out of hiding, he didn't show any kind of awe and surprise, and before that, he wasn't interested in them much. Why? Because he has already seen them and seen that everybody sees them differently yet in a strikingly similar fashion, and connected the dots, figuring them out before everyone else did.

@@jason-vv6kv When you see nothing where others see something, you can't help being perturbed by it. Londo wasn't. Yes, being a career diplomat, he can mask confusion no problem, but this mask itself is discernible. He didn't mask confusion when he said "I saw nothing", plus there were non-verbal signs of avoidance when he said it, which is why I think he was just lying, and "I saw nothing" was merely the best kind of copout he could come up with on that kind of short notice. No, that was a major point, actually. G'Kar saw G'Lan, *not* G'Quan. The Vorlons were careful to assume the role of non-race-belonging spiritual guides, not in-race figures, and Jesus was/appeared to be human (depending on which flavor of Christianity you follow, and that's not really the point - the point is that, regardless of your perception of Jesus's divinity, he looked normal while a Vorlon never will).

Everyone likes to say Londo saw nothing because his race wasn't manipulated and it had nothing to do with his soul. For those that watch the series all the way through we know humans ascend to energy yet still have a body. Kosh would still have a body albeit one of energy. Londo is attuned to the Shadows and this blinds him to seeing Kosh although I imagine he sees the Shadows quite clearly. When the Shadows are ambushed on Centauri he saw them without a doubt regardless of them being invisible to everyone else whereas the Vorlons would have been invisible to him if outside their encounter suit. I'm not sure how a younger race that hasn't been tainted by Vorlons or the Shadows would see a Vorlon outside of their encounter suit. I'd imagine it would simply seem very very alien (not necessarily ugly) where their minds could not comprehend what they are seeing. This would cause fear that the Vorlons wouldn't want which is why they tinkered with some of the younger races to insure a positive reaction.
@ethenallen1388

It's a safe bet that Kosh knew Londo was working with the Shadows and may have used the attack on Sheraton to express his displeasure with Londo as well as give Sheraton an endorsement.
