I was afraid of this. I believe this is exactly why Platinum is begging for scalebound, or an acquisition. If you remember early platinum days, they had to make really bad licensed games in short order to fund the passion projects, and with this game being a turd, and Bayo 3 taking far too long, they are in trouble, and it shows.

@@JohnLynchbooks Anarchy Reigns was fun, great characters, amazing soundtrack, great combat system especially for a multiplayer game, there were juggle combos, side step, footsies, whiff punish, special moves, grabs and everything. To this day , they're still no other multiplayer fighting games like Anarchy Reigns. Wonderful 101 is one the most crazy and unique action game ever. I did not play Transformers but it was well received .

This was clearly a single player game, placed on the chopping block and butchered into a multiplayer game as a service. If you look at the early trailers you can see more of the combat and style that was taken out. Add this to the live service graveyard with Anthem and Godfall. Thoughts and prayers 🙏

I don't think it was single player. Inaba spoke about how they wanted to create live games and they asked Squeenix to share assets from FF14 for it. I wonder if it was inexperience with online games or no budget? The poor visuals and rehashed assets from FF14 makes it seem like it was a low budget free to play/mobile title that eventually got slapped with a $60 price tag.

It’s funny, people were saying the same thing about Scalebound and Inaba said no. I think it’s the same case here, people are speculating a bunch of things, when the simple answer could be that they either were making a service game from the start and as usual multiple things changed during development to fit the design, or they pivoted towards a service game because of trends. A publisher doesn’t always have to always have a gun to the developers head, sometimes devs just step in poo on their own.

The director of FFXIV Naoki Yoshida even came out publicly and said that platinum is using assets from FFXIV for armor. They couldn’t even bother to make their own armor for this game. I know platinum is only making the game they were told to make but damn this is sad especially since Nier and Astral Chain were bangers.

As a huge Platinum fan, I feel so sad about this. The initial combat demo all those years ago looked somewhat interesting, but the end result just comes off so bland and uninspired on all fronts - the art style, the gameplay, the sound. It's like at some point Platinum just gave up on it.

This game was directed by Kenji Saito. The game director for GODDAMN METAL GEAR RISING! 😭 This should've been a banger but it looks like it changed directions to a GaaS midway through development. Not to mention Squenix said, "Fuck Elden Ring, Horizon FW, Dying Light, Sifu, GT7 and Ghostwire with a Gideon Coffin! We're dropping right in the middle of all that shit!" Also Squenix, "We have no idea why BF didn't meet our expectations."

Valkyria Chronicles definitely set the bar for me for that sketch/watercolor art style. I think you really have to commit to the bit if you're going for that. You don't have to be obviously anime styled like VC, but you can't half-ass it.

That game while not the most complex in terms of combat, felt like a watered down MGR mixed with a very watered down Bayo, with enough depth from the RPG side to make up for the relatively simple character action lite gameplay. This on the other hand feels like the fundamentals of a Souls like combat system, but one devoid of all the tension, weight and risk/reward element that makes them shine. All of that exchanged for some extremely rough character action elements crudely stapled onto the core of a style of combat that doesn't suit it one bit. It feels like the atrocious fusion of a methodical Souls combat system and the fast paced, mechanically rich intensity of character action, already a strange choice to begin with and made worse by the fact it does none of what makes either style shine, well and it feels like the two sides actively conflict and drag each other down. Sluggish, stamina based combat like a Souls game but mixed with a gimped version of the mobility, heavy combo focus and skill based grading of character action. The only thing I can think of that even remotely feels like Nier: A is the way your shoulder button attacks can be mixed into other actions seamlessly. Which is something I'd compare to DMC 5's Bringer Knuckle for Nero and Swords Formation for Dante, as both are a variation on the same idea, more so than I'd compare it to the pod weapons and Grimoire from Nier at least in concept. In execution though, I suppose the pod weapons are a very good comparison. Well that and the perfect dodge mechanic but that's a signature feature of Platinum in general and one that tons of games use these days, not something lifted from Automata. Either way though, regardless of what style of game I compare it to Babylon's Fall is mediocre at best, with few new good ideas hampered by lackluster execution and core systems taken from other games that feel totally out of place together. It feels utterly amateur coming from Platinum, strange given their experience with action RPG elements, their near supremacy in the action department and their clear love of experimental games that push boundaries. That's purely the combat. It completely lacks the spectacle and charm of Platinum's usual fare and has none of Square's signature godly CGI. Has an interesting premise, I'll give it that but that just makes it even worse in my eyes as what could've been a great story is being dragged down by what is on every other level mediocre to awful. I honestly wouldn't believe Platinum could drop the ball this hard if I hadn't played it myself.

Yeah I was in the closed beta tests for the PC, and I can honestly say the art style used to be way worse, and at the time you felt like something was off, but you couldn't quite put your finger on it. This shouts that SqEx didn't give Platinum a good budget, like at all. There earliest sign, other than the weird art style, was the asset flip from FFXIV for gear sets that they handwaved an explanation for. Granted, it's been a while since we got a bad Platinum game, so I guess it was just time.

It's strange. When I first saw Baylon's Fall I had zero interest even with platinum's name attached. Then I forgot about it, heard about it again recently and had a vague hope it might surprise me. Then my first read turned out to be correct. Outriders is pretty decent in terms of SE live service games but that one wasn't fundamentally broken like this. There's a lot more work to salvage this. Too bad.
