@@edmundironside9435yes I did watch it because we were raised in PBS. And I never once said I understood politics or social issues that they were discussing. I was fascinated by the theme song, it drew me in, and I liked the lighting, the calm atmosphere of the show, and Buckley’s classic voice and delivery. You jumped the gun. Be cautious what you assume, listen to my words carefully, and choose your own carefully as well.

It's unfortunate that the violinist is playing in a romantic style, +/-125 years later than the other three soloists. The others sound great together but when he comes in, he plays ON the string whilst everyone else is playing "off the string", i.e. a baroque staccato rather than a romantic legato.
@mirko90725 жыл бұрын
Well, that violinist was one of the pioneers in recording Bach's partitas for violin solo using a real - not fake as those employed by hysterically informed performers - and really curved "Bach bow" so he did know indeed which style was appropriate for this music. Buchner was not a philological illiterate, on the other hand the assumption that vibrato was off limits for baroque players is still to be proven and it is mainly a commercial theory to increase the gap between musical interpretations in order to have something really new to sell. The fact that today HIP has become the standard does not automatically imply that these performances are wrong. Yes, somehow other have more balance, but this feels an entirely different and better piece than in HIP interpretations, it has 10 times more life than those. Baroque really "hysterical" staccato is a myth invented by Harnoncourt and Richter's style is not to employ legato but to make play "espressivo", a subjective and wonderful midway between the rhytmical appoggiaturas and and the amount of legato which is required to make a piece cantabile - a prerequisite also for the baroque - instead of breaking pedantically the music into rags as other conductors require to do.
@davidhorn59714 жыл бұрын
@@mirko9072 I appreciate your insight on this. I, too, have always held the opinion that Bach's music was meant to be enjoyed and to express the enjoyment for life that Bach truly had. Most literalists will see the notes and restrict their expressions. History has shown us that marking were left off deliberately to allow musicians the freedom to find their expression in their performance. It could have simply been that the microphone was closer to the violinist in the original recording and therefore it dwarfed the other performers. I found the recorder's playing superb in this.
