One of the hardest Bach's violin sonata to perform, because it is actually a trio-sonata and it is very hard to keep together the delicate interplay between the violin and the 2 hands of the harpsichordist, to perform this kind of dialogue, in which the violinist also keeps his own freedom in realizing the complicated ornaments. These 2 musicians have a very good coordination between them. Beautiful upload. Thanks.

The adagio touches ones heart. Shunske Sato is a genius who must really understand Bach's deepest thoughts. the interaction between violin and harpischord is as close to perfection as it can get. Thanks for uploading this video Neth. Bach Soc.

Two reflections. One, how the asian people has been so perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music. I am afraid we westerners have been far less perceptive in grasping the beauty ond delicacy of eastern music. Second, how the arch changed the sound of the baroque violin. The violin body is unchanged since the XVII century, but the arch and the absence of vibrato has allowed for a completely different musical experience. Thanks for posting.

> how the asian people has been so perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music< Well, I agree that *some* Asian are perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music, but it is not because they are Asian. That is a matter of musical sensibility: some people are gifted, while others are not. For that matter, the situation is no different with westerners, right? (Just an opinion from the Land of Rising Sun.)

I was surprised by the low pitch, which is much lower than the "usual" A=415. I supposed it must be Bach's own....but I am not knowledgeable about his standard. I hadn't noticed the low pitch in other performances in this amazing series, but in this case it is striking.
5 жыл бұрын
Why would Bach have his own pitch? Perhaps you're confusing pitch with temperament; one has nothing to do with the other. In the late Baroque, wind instruments were designed to play at chamber pitch (~a415) or French chamber pitch (~a392), which is about a 1/2 step lower than chamber pitch. (In the early Baroque winds were designed to play at a462 or higher.) I think this performance is at French chamber pitch.
@herrickinman93035 жыл бұрын
It's French chamber pitch aka tief Kammerton. Bach didn't have his own pitch. Maybe you're confusing pitch with keyboard temperament. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Bach performed his music at various pitches ranging from a whole step below A440 to a minor 3rd above it, depending on the pitch of the organ and the pitch convention in use.

Mainly due to the fact that this is a HAP of Bach's works and 400-415Hz was the standard tuning at the time.

@The MIDI Bach Project Thank you! I did not know that at all, although I guessed it had something to do with French taste and practices.
