Very nice phrasé and articulation (elegantly outlined but sound attack of pipes), such research of a careful and singing conduction of the choral phrase, usual at harpischord is so rare at organ... Makes the chant almost voca, which is not easy at organ. Thank You.

@@pyraledubuis9744 I agree with every word you wrote. Some performers (mercifully, not many) go to the extreme of smearing the articulation of JSB's divine counterpoint, which to me is almost like attacking a great oilpainting with a spray can of solvent.

What frequency is this organ tuned to? I was listening, and I realized that even though he is playing in Eb, the organ sounds as if it were E
@bach2 жыл бұрын
The Netherlands Bach Society is a period ensemble. We play on (copies of) instruments from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In those days, the tuning was not A-440 or A=442 Hz, as is the standard today, but A=415 or A=465 Hz. That's the reason why it sounds different than we are used to.

Bach is, by far, the best musician ever and a great believer in God and his son Jesus Christ. Curiously, opening the competition to occupy the position of director of the music school and the church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, several musicians presented themselves. After the presentation of the respective works, Johann Sebastian Bach occupies sixth place. Due to different reasons, the five before him resigned, Bach did accept the position of school and church musician. Councilman Platz observed in the final committee session that, "since we can't get any of the best musicians we will have to choose a mediocre one." What an unfair and lapidary phrase! How many times are people's lives decided in this way!Bach's music is that of a huge believer in Christian dogmas. Most of his works have the following inscription at the beginning: I.I (Iesus iuva: Jesus help me) and ends with S.D.G (Soli Deo Gloria: only glory to God). Such was Bach's faith that, in the words of his son Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, "the whole family began daily activities by praying the creed."
@Jaujau9336 ай бұрын
I'm sure his beliefs did nothing to enhance the genius he already had. He was not the best musician ever, that's nonsemse.
@JoseManuelRosaPerez6 ай бұрын
@@Jaujau933 Bach is probably the most important musician in history, the musician's musician, and it is not trivial that he has been considered the greatest of all time by the most renowned experts and by the musicians themselves. Wagner, Schoenberg, Schubert and many others recognized the immense greatness of Bach. Mahler said: "In Bach all the essential cells of music are united as the world is to God; there has never been a greater polyphony than this." Beethoven compared The Well-Tempered Harpsichord (his cycle of preludes and fugues) to the Bible. The atheist Nietzsche wrote after hearing The St. Matthew Passion: "One who has completely forgotten Christianity here hears it as gospel."

The phrasing is interesting, but sometimes quite particular, sophisticated, maybe not the only one which can be used. For example, why insist on the D note, at the second bar at the right hand, on the 2 last quavers (D-E flat notes) ? I find that it makes them heavy uselessly, I prefer to play them normally. I prefer to play the pedal notes legato too. I know that everyone has an opinion about Bach phrasing.

@stthomasmore48113 жыл бұрын
Good tempo and registration BUT: This level of détaché almost sounds like a caricature of "Baroque" articulation. Too detached and FAR too extravagant slowing in the lesser cadences. When your Baroque cadences start to sound like "rubato", you've lost the plot. You do not have to work this hard to make it sound articulate with such a wonderfully 'chiffy' principal. Please, at LEAST legato for the Chorale tune! Otherwise it will just sound quirky-jerky and quaint.
@jeanzahlen23693 жыл бұрын
