I’ve been dancing bachata for almost a year now and no one has ever explained musicality and this is why I’ve struggled with dancing it. I’m mainly a salsa dancer and I understand salsa music. But this has been mote than its weight in gold. Thank you for doing this video. You guys are amazing. Thank you once again.

Interpreting the music is a major challenge for the dance partners. It is desirable that the leader anticipates what is going to happen next in the music and lead the follower in manner to give her space to improvise and express herself accordingly. Learning music theory is usually considered boring by dance students as they are "hungry" for learning moves. Later, on the dance floor, they dance "roboticaly", without "sabor", many times seeming to be fighting each other. I consider that learning music theory and structure is of major importance because we dance music. Thank, Elena y Marius, for this wonderful video.
@MariusElenaBachata4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it. Thank you. It's true that students in the beginning are "moves-hungry", but in time if they find out that they really like dancing (and not for meeting boys/girls, having fun, drinks etc... ) slowly they search for more knowledge. Let's hope that more, and more will wish to evolve and become better :D

Hey guys. I really hope this will be useful. Remember to take breaks, and notes. Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro, Demonstration of Musicality, Different Musicality Levels (Important for the rest of the video) 08:08 - Structure of the video 09:05 - Part 1 : Fast Music Theory 12:48 - Part 2 : General Structure of a Bachata song 23:42 - Part 3 : How to interpret 29:25 - Part 4 : Bonus Tips Also, consider buying our premium materials www.salchatadojo.com . Especially the materials about general music theory and the bachata music theory (like rhythms, instruments) complement this material and vice-versa. You won't find better made materials because they are made for the dancer that I was when starting and nobody was giving me information. I made it for my young-self-dancer. So I really believe in it. Hope you like it... If you do... leave a comment :D P.S. This is not a perfect video or an in depth video. It would take hours to explain everything. Also this is from a dancer's point of view, and not a musician's.

Nice tutorial as always ! When I started social dancing, I was often off beat, and I think the most important thing to become a musical ( and natural ! ) dancer is to listen as often as possible to bachata songs ! It helps your brain to catch and separate all tempos,beats,breaks and so on in most of the songs. Again, really great tuto !

True. One of the core principles of becoming more musical is to listen to a lot of music. :D

¡Amazing job guys! I'm a beginner and I find all your videos very useful.

@@MariusElenaBachata Hi Marius & Elena. Rewatching this and I thought of a question. During the footwork part, does improvisation mean you can do any kind of footwork you think of that will go with the music? Does it mean you take "real bachata footwork" and try to follow the music with them to the best of your ability? Or could it be both? I'm always impressed when leads do something cool during this part of the song. So I have started to play with it. But I don't know a lot of footwork yet, so for now I make up steps to the music and just try to have fun. But technically speaking, would there be a formally "right or wrong" way to do it?
@MariusElenaBachata2 жыл бұрын
@@e.phoenix2686 You can do both. There are no restrictions for social dancing as long as it's fun and safe :D Don't listen to anyone saying... ohhh this is wrong or this is right. For the footwork part you can do anything you want, improvise and let the music flow through you, or try to put your already known steps on the music, to the best of your ability. P.S. That part of "there is no right and wrong" applies as long as you keep in mind what makes bachata... bachata. You are not gonna start doing Salsa shines on Bachata :D (that indeed would be wrong)

@MariusElenaBachata Жыл бұрын
Heeey :D As a new dancer I recommend you to listen to a lot of bachata so that your mind gets to know the music. Then if you can look up some basic music theory lessons just to understand the basic stuff, afterwards get to know a little bit the structure of the bachata songs... This will cut down the time to learn by a order of months or years... BUT .... nothing beats practice. Just listen to a lot of songs, and if you can actively listen even better (closing your eyes and just focusing on the music.)

Ty for this info about Bachata music&rhytm,I'm all the time wondered about how other experienced dancers(leaders) catch the this part of the music like slow or sensual parts of the music,so u are basically saying; Count on 4x8 and first of the new 1x8 saying do some sensual things or maybe slow things am ı right ? :D It's like some system of the bachata music ?
@MariusElenaBachata4 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes and No :D In general, all the 4/4 music (salsa, bachata, kizomba, comercial music etc...) usually has some kind of change after 4x8. It might happen on the last 8 count or on the next 8 count: Something like this... 12345678 12345678 12345678 12345678 (something happens/if not... then on next one) 12345678 (something might happen) 12345678 12345678 12345678 This is like a totally general rule... Just a guideline. For the sensual, slow down, or hard-core moves... look for the energy of the song (flow-ish, going into more relaxed, or very powerfull) Hope this helps... it's hard to explain in a comment :D

This is a perfect example proving how "counting sucks". Instructor catches the accent consistently while dancing but fails only when he attempts to count :D I believe he doesn't count while dancing. As he said correctly, every song may have surprises which gives songs their character. Therefore one should never count but feel the music
@MariusElenaBachata2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of people that can't "feel" music and is really hard for them to understand it. Basic music theory (counting is one of the principles) can help those that can't feel it. Later, with practice and understanding of the music you can also "feel it". I am not talking about "feeling" music in the way of "dancing like you don't care". Because you can feel it in one way, and your partner in another way. You must "feel" it similar. Anyways, this is very subjective and can be debated a lot. Some people that feel the music naturally have no idea on how to explain it to someone that doesn't feel it. And some people that know the theory behind music cannot explain the "feeling". But with practice, you can get the best from both worlds, you can feel and understand it. Hope this makes sense.

I think you are a very good teacher, but I think your partner talks better English. It's nice if she can talks about this once. I don't understand exactly what you mean. Or you can try talk a little bit slower, thanks for the videos

Hahaha... Yeah, Elena talks better, she articulates the words better :D I have to talk fast because otherwise the videos would take 1+ hour. But, for sure I will improve and Elena will also talk more :))

Esperamos poder corrigir esses problemas no futuro. Deixe-me saber se uma legenda em espanhol ajudaria. Eu poderia fazer um para este vídeo ... Como dissemos, só recentemente começamos a fazê-los em espanhol para os vídeos recentes. (google translate)
