Another one of my African American friends got suspended for wearing a bandana, even though so many white girls did the same. Here's the thing. Until I was 8, I didn't know black people were real. I grew up around very few people, I lived in the deep countryside where the nearest house was on the horizon. The only people I was ever exposed to were my family and the local village people, all of whom were white. We had a TV but it only had 5 channels and kids TV programmes were only aired from 3pm-5pm so I didn't watch much TV. The few black people I saw on TV were in the war films my dad would watch and because it was a war film I assume the black skin was painted on for camouflage. Extremely sheltered, extremely hidden from society. The first time I saw a black person I thought it was weird they were in camouflage but I didn't think much of it. Its wasn't until I moved to a village with better broadband and more TV channels were available that I realised that was the colour of their skin. I was a bit weirded out at first, it took some time to adjust to the knowledge that there are more countries than just Britain and more ethnicities than just British people. My mum explained to me that bullying people because of their looks is bad and I accepted that. After moving to a more populated area I was exposed to more rasicsm. And I would take what people were saying about foreigners at face value because they were adults and I thought they knew better. It took a while to unlearn those prejudices I took at face value because I was just a kid. And even after that upbringing, I still knew from a young age that slavery is bad, that rasicsm is bad. I still didn't partake in the rasict costume parties. People went to the Halloween parties dressed as native Americans and Mexicans and I went dressed as a spider. Even after my stupidly sheltered and out of touch upbringing I could still deduct that rasicsm is bad. Age and upbringing isn't an excuse once you reach a certain age because at that age you're capable of educating yourself.

@@wallysmet5076 there's a difference between wearing genuine or an accurate representation of someone's native clothing to partake in cultural events such as the kimono, and wearing the fetishised version of the clothing worn by the people you slaughtered, raped and took as slaves. I'm from Scotland and people from other countries wearing a kilt to attend formal events isn't a problem for me. However if someone took it and turned it into a fetish item to wear in a mocking manner that would offend me and every other scottish person on earth.

@@wallysmet5076 Their culture was stripped from them and if you don't believe that then I suggest you educate yourself. Also the whole idea of wearing a costume on Halloween is to make fun of it. Nobody who wears a native american costume is doing it to be historically accurate, they're doing it because they thinks its either funny or sexy. Do you ever see Mexicans actually walking around with mustaches bigger than their face and wearing a hat the size of a kiddie pool? What other reason would you wear something like that other than because you think it's funny, it's no less rasict than taping your eyelids closed and wearing a basket on your head and saying you're chinese. Although I'd love to see you attempt to explain how dressing as a Chinese person is rasict but dressing as a native American isn't. Scottish people have a sense of humour but our humour isn't derived of rasict stereotyping. I can guarantee if you rocked up to a Scottish pub wearing a short kilt with your balls hanging out whilst wearing a ginger wig and screaming "freedom" in your shitty attempt at a Scottish accent, you'll get your cunt kicked in.

Non racist ways to show you’re a southerner: Making sweet tea Eating southern soul food/barbecue/Mexican food Enjoying the great outdoors - beaches/mountains/canyons/caves/prairies/rivers/lakes Horse riding Wearing pearls Wearing cowboy boots Compiling and sharing recipe cards Saying sir and ma’am (to older ppl u know cuz not everyone likes being called that) Saying please and thank you Showing southern hospitality - welcoming new people into the south, Sunday dinners, being friendly with your neighbors and helping them in hard times, smiling at strangers, holding the door for others, thank you notes Saying y’all or bless your heart Being a fan lady (if u know u know)

I've never been into the bachelor or reality TV shows in general because of the over the top theatrics but this whole situation was a big yikes from start to finish 😬 on the fashion note though I think in general you can appreciate the fashion of different time eras without celebrating the autrocities associated with it but in her case going to a southern party on a plantation takes away that general appreciation of the clothing and is instead just straight up glamorizing that time period.

as someone who’s in the historical fashion community, most of us are aware of the dark history around it, and many BIPOC are involved, many of us realize how much slave labor and colonization went into famous dresses, and we celebrate the art of it in the modern world at balls and social media. Going to a party that’s celebrating the slavery and white supremacy of the old south with fashion the background is no way or impossible to be claimed as fashion celebration.

Thank you for this. I’m a black woman in her 40s and when I first saw The Bachelor I knew it wasn’t made for me. It was designed to celebrate white feminine beauty in a way that Miss America no longer could. The Bachelor was the new Miss America that had been infiltrated by women of color. The rose became the white woman’s crown, and the show had no intention of giving it to a black woman. That’s why a black man born of 2 black parents, and especially born of a black woman has never been chosen. He might prefer us and we were not meant to “win.” Chris Harrison knows this and doesn’t mind. I didn’t watch a full season again until Rachel Lindsay was a contestant.
