When you are new to it, it takes an adjustment period to get used to it. After all, it is a different approach to take photos of what you are normally used to. But after a couple of days or weeks using it, it becomes instinctual and it does give you precise manual control of focus. No longer will your shutter button be locked up because the camera's computer thinks it isn't in focus. You will miss far fewer shots because you won't be fighting with the camera's computer when the shutter can be triggered. I have used BBF since the film days with my Minolta Maxxum 8000i, and I still use it with my Canon EOS 5D MK3, and 5Dsr.

For me I use each interchangeably depending on what I want to shoot that day. I prefer to use the half-press for anything where I need to be quick (e.g. street photos), and then back button for things where I want to make sure not to mess up my focus (e.g. landscape). Maybe if I committed more to the back focusing method I would be as quick but I realized after trying a few times when shooting in the street that I forgot and still tried to use the half-press and missed my shot. Have a great end of year and happy new year!

Sorry for going off the main topic, but I just have to say that I love your intro video of the streets of Chicago before you start your actual content on the street. I am just starting to learn how to make videos (I've been just a photographer for seven years now) and that is pretty much what I had in mind as my personal goal. I have been using it for ages. Push once for focus push and hold for continuous. Great if you set it to tracking. On the EOS R the dustbin button will re-set the spot to the centre. Try combining it with back button exposure hold. It's no use at all for selfies though! 😏

The other great thing about BBF on the A7III is that while in AF-C, you can tap the screen anywhere to place the focus point and not have to rely on the Multi-selector.

Is there a delay with the a7iii when you shoot using the lcd screen? I’m shooting dogs with canon and sometimes I like to use the LCD screen because I can touch where I want to focus but there’s a slight delay and it causes me to miss a lot of shots. Do you have that problem ever?

I switched in 2018 to bbf and really prefer it now. It took a few weeks for it to become second nature (and not forget to press it), but I feel more in control now. In particular it avoids getting the focus right with a half pressed and then a few moments later when I press full way (after releasing the button) having the camera decide to focus elsewhere. This is common when you want to take a person, want to have her in focus but then want to wait for the perfect expression or moment.

Can a kind soul here help me out? So I’ve set my back button focus on my Sony A6400, turned off AF on shutter, and set focus mode as AF-C. Thing is, when I’m testing it out, my focus still moves. I pressed the BBF button once (then release) on a subject in the middle of my screen, then recompose it to the left of my frame. But then my camera refocuses to whatever’s in the middle of my frame despite the subject still being in frame. I tried it with a sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. Could somebody tell me why my camera refocuses it to something else despite me “locking” it? I used several different focus areas and it’s still the same.

What are your thoughts now on BBF with Sony cameras?
@AlanMorrisSF6 жыл бұрын
It takes a while to get used to. Where it helps is if you are doing a group shot and don't want the camera to refocus every time you lift your finger from the shutter. However, autofocus is getting much faster these days so BBF is not as important

On my Canon 5DIV I use both... I configured my AF-ON and Shutter to do the same, and changed the * button to switch between AF-S and AI Servo (=AF-C). So I can : - Use my camera normally with half press and shoot. - Use AF-ON button and shoot, because when you keep it pressed, the half shutter does nothing, so you have just a normal BBF. Just need to keep the AF-ON button pressed when you use the shutter button, which is very simple and easy. - Use AF-ON on AI-Servo. I just have too quickly press the * button to engage it and boom, AF-ON in AI-Servo. Fast enough and simple. Just need to keep the AF-ON pressed when you hit the shutter button, just like above. Best of both words I think... 😁
@howardholtzman13316 жыл бұрын
On my Canon 5D MK IV, I keep the camera in AI Servo, my Shutter Button to focus and my AF On Button to also focus but to switch to One Shot. This way it is less likely that I'll miss a shot and I have the best of both worlds. The only disadvantage is when I don't want the camera to focus I have to turn off Auto Focus or take focus off the Shutter Button.
@obscur_yoann6 жыл бұрын
@@howardholtzman1331 "The only disadvantage is when I don't want the camera to focus I have to turn off Auto Focus or take focus off the Shutter Button." That's why I prefer to use a button (the *) to quickly switch beween AF-S and AI Servo. It's more convenient I think, the * is so close to the AF-ON it's very easy and fast to catch, even if it's not exactly like no focus at all. I also relocated the * (AE lock hold) to the M-Fn button, close to the shutter button, but I seldom use it...

@cristibaluta6 жыл бұрын
Nice, didn't saw this option before and i wish there were more toggles. Weird though that on sony you don't have any feedback when toggling unless you're in the display mode that includes the AF icon.
@DeusExAstra6 жыл бұрын
I tried that a while ago, but dont like it because it's impossible to know what's currently toggled on without looking for some indicator, which slows me down quite a lot. At least with the other methods you always know what's going to happen when you hit that shutter button.
@rogerfleming11216 жыл бұрын
I have heard that AFS and AFC use different focus methods. AFC uses PDF, while AFS uses PDF followed by contrast detection. The idea is that AFS will be just a little more accurate, since contrast detection is just a little more accurate than pure PDF. (But contrast detection results in focus hunting.) If you just always use AFC, you will always be just using PDF. AFC and BBF works for me,, but just thought it worth mentioning.

I often shoot flying airplanes and birds. The common problem is that I miss the object while focusing and the camera goes far, far away with focus and it takes time to refocus and continue shooting. BBF saves me from that - I can focus when I want and then shoot without focusing (and without the risk of miss-focus to the background).

Probably me, but I can’t see that one way is better than the other. The down side, when I use my remote I have to change the settings back to default so it can focus remotely. Too much messing about to make it worthwhile. However, if I’m missing the point I’d love someone to tell me how.

Great video! I'm going to try out using back button focusing. Question do you have to re-focus if you are using a zoom lens and you lock focus on one focal length but then you decide to zoom in or out a little?

Yes you do. Once you zoom in or out, your focal length changes, so it is better to refocus on your subject. Especially if you're using a wider aperture.

I think if you tried it for a while you'd get used to it. I moved my focus to a function button that is on top & next to the shutter. I find it easier than than using my thumb on the back button. I use my index finger for focus & my 2nd finger for the shutter. I've changed the shutter to 1/2 press. I've added a looped strap - which I've lined the inside with some stick on Velcro for my ring finger to go through & onto the camera grip - which adds support. I've had this set up for 2 years now & can't imagine going back.

The beauty of BBF is that you don't really need to set focus point unless shooting in AF-C. Just leave focus point in center, aim where you want to focus, press back button, then recompose and not have to worry about camera refocusing every time the shutter button is pressed.
@alexmeier196 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... Too many options to chose from. 😂 On my 5DIV I set AF-ON to "switch to AF-C and start focusing/tracking" and if I release it, it is back to AF-S with half-press again. My reasons for that are: 1) if you/I shoot a still subject, I want to refocus every shot anyway, because I'm afraid of the camera missing focus and thus affect all the shots. 2) If the subject is moving, I will shoot in AF-C anyway.

👍🎉🎉🎉🎉Super congrats on reaching 40K subs before the end of the year! Onward to 50K. I stayed with BBF ever since I tried it - never went “back”. Some friends have trouble w/half-press and recompose because they don’t hold down the shutter halfway when recomposing - they let up enough such that the cam refocuses again. A few caviats. Even w/BBF, the shutter button will still do stuff other than trip shutter. The half press (even w/BBF) locks auto exposure. Your Sony has the option of linking AE to the focus point, so you won’t have the problem of half-press changing exposure (good for, say, portraits when you are focusing and metering on your subject). Also (for Sony, at least) when using Auto ISO, the half press (tied to AE, I guess) reveals the ISO selected by the camera. So, half press is still very important and useful for lots of cams. Your cam, of course, has separate AFL and AEL buttons. Anyway, the button selected for BBF needs to be at a comfortable spot for the photographer - an individual choice that also depends on button placement for your cam. (A front button on the cam face might be better for some folks/models.). Great advice to exercise your face to keep from freezing - Ha😂. I’ve never seen a pair of good cold weather photo gloves. Does Chicago have its version of a NYC New Year’s Eve “ball drop”? Lots of good photo ops. Cheers!
@Pierretlambert6 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! Thanks! Good point about the AE, I will give that a go later too. No ball drop here from what I've heard! Yes I like that Sony has AFL and AEL - I'll experiment more and see how I set it! Have a great day!

I just tested this using an a7ii with two remotes. A Foto&Tech IR remote and a Revo VRS-Multi. The Foot&Tech remote actually will focus before taking the shot. The Revo VRS will not however. I'm assuming it depends on the camera and remote combination.

The only reason i havent moved to BBF is because I dont want to have to use my thumb to be activating a button on the back while shooting. I prefer to have the thumb helping to stabilize the camera. With BBF I just feel like the camera is too unstable and moves too much while I'm shooting.

Best to set AEL button to AF-on @evanessence1085

The ugly thing about back button focus on the GX9 is that it requires 2 separate steps to change (I might be wrong as I didn't read the * *cough* * whole manual...) So 1 set up the AF/AE button to AE-ON and 2.deactivate Shutter Button Focus. To switch back I have to 1 enable Shutter Button focus and 2 *if required to lock the focus*: enable AF/AE button to AF lock again. I use manual focus often for getting right precise details, so I am using back button focus most of the time. But especially when it is about people, I need switch back. And that's where fiddling in settings is bad. I'd love to have this switchable more easily. "My menu" for sure is an advantage over the GX80/GX85!

Let me add something useful here (I'm a beginner, so it must make sense 😉) : besides using AFC or AFS, Manual Focus is invaluable... if you want to use the touch screen on your camera. It will be equivalent to AFC... but you'll be experimenting with focus points in adverse lighting conditions and watching in real time the results of your choices... just like with a smartphone, whose image processing is about 100 timrs faster than the processor in your expensive camera. This is great for locking it in with the Back Button!

I’m flicking between both at the moment to see what works for me. It’s so confusing because there are so many videos out there both promoting BBF and trashing BBF. Confused.com 🤷♂️ so continue to try and work out what works for me. I do like the idea of BBF. bonne année 🎆🎊

Hello, great video..... i also live in Chicago,,,, I'm just getting into photography and have a lot of questions..... this may be a strange request,, but do you think we could meet up on a Saturday sometime for the day ?? I love to shoot my grandchildren and landscape photos,,, not to mention I'm going on an Alaskan cruise in August and would love to know a lot more then i do...... the equipment i own is the nikon d3400 with the 70-200mm kit lense,, the 18-55mm kit lense,, 50mm prime lense,, and the 1010-20mm ultra wide angle lens.... i also have a couple polorizing filters....i realize that's not much, but it's a great start for a beginner...... anyway, if your free some Saturday in the future, let me know,,, coffee is on me....and if so, I'll give you my number so we can coordinate

You can set any custom button to do bbf
@peter-robinson6 жыл бұрын
roger fleming true, I could, but the one i like the position of is ae-l which i use a lot. there’s a front button i could use but then it requires the shutter release finger rather than the thumb and that’s not going to work as well as bbf

Can you please explain why? I've tried it on my recent trip to Thailand and got really fed up with it.
@okiepita50t-town286 жыл бұрын
1977swampy Mainly because the shutter and focus are independent of each other, therefore you can focus and recompose and fix whatever you want on the exposure without affecting the focus. You can also hold it down and track focus on moving objects.
@ilmanti5 жыл бұрын
@@1977swampy As Okiepita said, the goal is to separate focus from everything else. For a concrete example, let's say you're waiting on the side of the road and bikes are going across all the time, and you want to take a shot of one of them but want to have focus prepared. You can: manual focus; shutter focus, then switch to manual then not forget to switch back to auto after taking the shot; keep the shutter focus pressed until a bike comes by (and that might take a while); or you can press the back button once, focus, then wait however long you need to wait, without having to change settings after taking the shot.

Like lots of peeps, it change my photography. So much faster in focusing, when trying to only shot the shots I want. Great if a subject moves, and is really good for landscape photography, as most shots are taken with a remote, so BBF makes sense in use, IMHO. Either way, makes life easier with its speed, and control.

I use shutter button focus. I have a quick way to switch between AF and MF if I want to hold focus, and I have a custom button to switch between focus modes .... but Sony's AF-A mode is best of both worlds so I don't need to switch much. Did you switch to Nikon?

I’ve been using it since 2006 but have considered going back since focusing systems have improved quite a bit over the years. But I can’t stop using it. Instead I’ve set a custom focus mode for times when it might not be ideal (2% of the time).
