As someone from California, I really LOVE the light in this state. I find it hard to shoot without it, I love the brightness of it. When I'm back east and the light is dulled by all that humidity I find it hard to get good looking photos. One exception is the parts of California that get fog, one can get some beautiful, atmospheric photos both in day and night when that fog rolls in.

My camera change was facilitated by frustration with controls. I was frustrated with the amount of manual dials/buttons on my Sony a6000. Operating in manual mode was not enjoyable. I almost made the jump to the a6600 with a front dial, but just decided to go FF with an a7iii. Much happier now with the control scheme. Edit: I also agree that the obsession with capturing every detail in the highlights and shadows is a huge mistake/trap that beginners fall into. One of my favorite photos that I've taken was a ray of light shining onto the front fender/headlight of an incredible classic Porsche in a dark garage. This ray of light was SO MUCH brighter than the surrounding shadows. Absolutely no way to expose for everything without bracketing. I absolutely love the way it turned out. The ray of light is like a frame that shows a slice of a beautiful car. You see a few hints of the curves in the shadows and that's it. Don't be afraid to blow out your highlights or lose info in the shadows if it makes for a more compelling image. I actually edited that one to eliminate even more information in the shadows.

Really enjoy your focus right now. Not just the focus of your videos but your personal focus. As a street shooter first, I've found that watching videos or benefiting from books and such is great, but when I'm out shooting, the photo, it's composition and subject have to be first for me or I'll tend to hesitate or over-think and miss shots - like golf. (Old golf adage - the two worst golfers are the ones who listen to everyone and the ones who listen to no one) Thanks for your work. Noticed the neck strap around your wrist. We'll get you converted to a wrist strap yet. 😊

I completely agree with Pierre's first tip: there’s no such thing as a boring place. If a place feels boring, it’s likely because we lack imagination or aren’t willing to challenge ourselves to make it work. There’s always something to photograph! Whether it’s zooming in on small details like a flower or fruit, or capturing people in action, you can always find an interesting angle. Just because a place doesn’t inspire you right away doesn’t mean it’s boring-it just means you need to look harder or differently. For tip 2, about harsh light, this is where gear and skill come into play. If you’re a beginner with older gear, I can completely understand why harsh light might feel overwhelming. It’s something experienced photographers handle almost instinctively, but for newcomers, figuring out how to use harsh light effectively can take time. Personally, I don’t enjoy shooting in cloudy weather or when it’s starting to get dark because it requires too much adjustment and effort. Similarly, shooting indoors can be a challenge because you’re constantly compensating for low or unnatural light. It’s a real test of patience and skill. Tip 3, the myth about needing better gear for better photos, depends on your perspective. To create great photos, you need skills, and those skills come from trial and error-taking bad photos, learning what works, and improving. Better gear doesn’t automatically make better photos; it just makes the process easier once you’ve developed your skills. New gear can save you from certain mistakes, like slight focus errors or small exposure issues, but it won’t teach you how to avoid those mistakes in the first place. In fact, relying too much on advanced gear can lead to bad habits that older, simpler gear wouldn’t let you get away with. Tip 4, "never shoot against the light," is one I’ve personally ignored many times! Shooting against the sun, the moon, or even a building like a Netto can create stunning effects. Backlighting can add mood, softness, or a unique perspective that’s worth exploring. Finally, tip 5, about protecting highlights, is one I hadn’t thought much about before. To be honest, I don’t spend a lot of time editing my photos-I prefer to keep them as they are and focus on shooting rather than post-processing. For me, the joy is in capturing the moment, not sitting at a computer tweaking it afterward. That said, I can see how learning to protect highlights could be valuable for someone who enjoys editing or wants more flexibility in their images.

The people who say there is no such thing as a boring place are almost always either (A) someone from a big city with lots of interesting architecture, metro lines and people to photograph or (B) someone from a European town or city with buildings that have been around since before America was even a thing. Contrast that with so many American suburban towns which are nothing but gasoline stations, tract houses and chain stores and restaurants. My hometown used to have the interest of a small town, but now the freeways are knocking on our doors, the chain businesses have come, and all the unique mom and pop stores and other unique aspects are gone, a remarkable change in just 15 years. Now people wish they'd taken more photos of this town in the 1990s before all this happened.

@ you look at it the wrong way you can always take photos of cracks , signs, plant, trees, sunset, building, insets, only your imagination is holding you back if you say there is nothing to photo of because it’s to boring. Even a homeless guy on the street can be a masterpiece if you know the angel and setting and post edited it’s all about how your imagination and skills.

After living in Ottawa/Gatineau for 42 years, the wife and I revisited our city this year! adding a flash to the setup by taking some street shot added alot of character to our usual picture. I also found new angle by changing to a 16mm! what you say is so true and I am still rocking my A7 II and I don't feel I need to upgrade at all. ceci dit merci le cousin Français tu donne toujours de bon trucs et on adore regarder tes voyages a travers ta camera

Great tips! I agree, expose for your subject, and shoot in Raw outdoors. I capture Jpeg and Raw as memory SDs are not expensive. Raw can recover some of the highlights, and your shadows as you mentioned are cleaner less noisy when you raise shadows in editing, exposing for subject area. I think everyone should own a full frame and an aps-c body to get the most of out our lenses for different uses. Used is fine, just review them with care, and save lots of money. Lightly used bodies and lenses save lots of money. I just bought today a 24MP Nikon D750 with 24-120mm F4 lens for $1200 (CDN exchange to USD at 1.39), which when it came out in 2009 cost over $3000 for the combo. The camera only had 28K shutter count, so barely used and works great, and it looks near new. The seller also had the Sony A1 he is keeping, and no longer needed this one as he was a bird photographer hobbyist needing more MP for birds. Cheers! TIP: Buy stuff off hobbyists for lightly used!

I agree with most of these but better gear 100% matters the more you progress. For example: if you start out taking photos at local football games as a hobby with an entry level DSLR like the Canon 4000D and move to a mirrorless camera like the R7 you are 100% going to take better photos with a camera that has good reliable focus tracking, a very fast continuous shooting so you’re less likely to miss shots and even something as simple as better battery life. Also, if gear didn’t matter then companies wouldn't be racing so hard to make improvements and come out with better cameras every year.

I hear you but better gear leads to better photos more often. They make certain shooting situations easier which lets you worry about things less. Aside from lenses, you can get great photos with cheap gear. You can show up to a sports game with a manual focus film camera and get fantastic shots, itll be really fkn hard and youll get like 1, but its doable

Agree and disagree. This all comes to question "What are you going to shoot" since on street photography, travel photography, portrait photography and sports and wildlife photography have different needs. On street photography sometimes the smaller camera is more handy since it does not draw that much attention and it is easier to get realistic photos of actual life around you because nobody seem to care, but if you are going to take photos of lions eating their food at the savanna then I am quite sure that you do not want to take those photos with fixed length point & shoot -camera unless you are faster runner than Usain Bolt and lions are not too interested to test it. Better is always depending on the task. I personally don't shoot almost never fast movement subjects so 10+ years old DSLR is more than great for me, but as you said, on local football games there would be need for better camera. Or maybe I would say "more suitable for the task", not necessarily better because it is always depending how we defend better. Faster autofocus, better color rendition, better RAW for edits or what. Long trips smaller gear might be better because you can carry it everywhere, but on places where it can be stolen easily then the cheaper camera might be better as long as it does the job. Camera companies will upgrade their products every year as long as there is people buying. Some changes are great for some people but many of changes are totally meaningless on other photography styles. I have multiple quite newish cameras (Fuji X-T2 and Canon R50), but also multiple old cameras (over 10+ years old) and now I have shot mostly with Canon 70D. It is old, built like a tank and it just "feels right" for most of the cases I like to take photos of. Technically Canon R50 is much much better, more superior, but emotionally I just like this 70D more and it gives me more joy to shoot with it. When I shoot video or photo shoots for persons who need photos to CV or whatever, I will use R50 because its quality, but on my just-for-fun daily shooting Canon 70D have been used a lot last couple of weeks. All in all, whatever works and does the job for the photographer, it is the best. Personally I believe that big part is also the emotional attachment - with some cameras it is more enjoyable to shoot without any rational reasons. :)

Used Lr camera DNG and editing them Now 15 Pro Max - sharing Pro RAW from native app to Lr and bringing highlights down make objects look gray or burnt. Used also ProRaw style in Lr option. Take pics non in front of sun, even exposure -0,03 in native app. What’s the issue? You also have it? Native app worknot good? Thanks you are here with us!

My favourite camera to shoot on is ~50 year old olympus. A few years ago I wanted the newest Sony full frame. After I got it it finally unlocked my brain and now I don't care about the camera body as much as I care about what lens I have. I am at the VERY START of the journey as a photographer, but I'm really glad I stepped out of the camera upgrade loop

Hi Pierre I have a question I have the Sony a7iii now for over 5 years and i love this camera so much. I'm not a professional photographer, it's just my hobby and i love to take photos.. Do i need to upgrade the camera? For example the Canon eos r6 ii? Is there a huge difference between them? Or just stick with my Sony a7iii to the end?
@XxCrazZyNo0oBxX
@XxCrazZyNo0oBxX Ай бұрын
If you are happy with your a7iii keep it, but if you want a switch consider the lenses you have.. If you have lots of Sony lenses wait for the a7V for example or pick up a used a7IV If you have no lenses then also consider picking up better glass, always remember to put more into glass than a body

I think you should only upgrade if you have identified a weakness in your current gear that is holding you back from making the photos you want to make. Or if you just want a new toy and have enough disposable income. That’s also valid. :P But the main thing is that you should focus on skill and not gear. With better skills comes better understanding of your own needs.

what is the best camera/lens for street photography?
@just_eirik
@just_eirik Ай бұрын
Whichever one you like to use. People do street photography with very slow and old cameras sometimes and they make nice photos. It’s all about finding a camera that you feel good about and that you like to use. If you have nothing right now and are unsure if you’re actually into street photography, get something cheap. Also I’d recommend looking at some of the photos from others that you like a lot and trying to find out what kind of lens they were shot with. If you are seeing a lot of photos shot with 85mm f1.4 lenses but you buy a kit lens, then you won’t get the same look. Also remember that there are often affordable lenses available in all kinds of focal lengths, so don’t look only for the main brands like Sony and Canon and Fuji.
@davidp1017
@davidp1017 Ай бұрын
I do a lot of street photography and im currently using the Sony a7iii and the sigma 85 mm lens! I know these two equipments are hella expensive but any 35 mm or 50 mm will be good for the lens and like what the person above said, at least get a cheap camera for now and get somewhat expensive lens because it's the lens that will determine the quality of the photo more so than the actual body of the camera

well gear does matter.. I mean if you own a modern €2000 costing fujifilm and it can't even basic autofocus anything moving then it is twice as hard than with another camera lol.. sad reality of being a fujifilm owner in 2024. can't even upgrade from the older xt4 (which kind of has decent-ish autofocus) bu the newer ones can't even focus in continues modes. that's ridiculous. so yeah gear definitely makes it easier and makes you miss less shots. but if you have decent good autofocus the rest doesn't matter that much indeed only a good lens and your technique and understanding light etc
