Dancers LifeYT an easy way of getting over the fear is learning a front handspring first... you go forward so you see what your doing... I also highly recommend using a trampoline if you have one or if you can go to a trampoline park

Okay, I really want to get my back handspring. That's all I've been thinking about lately. I know you're supposed to practice to get it but I feel like I have no place safe to practice. I used to practice on my mom's bed but I'm really scared to keep doing it. Also I'm so scared that I feel nervous for someone to spot me. Also I don't really trust anyone I know to spot me. I don't really think I'm scared of jumping backwards I'm just scared of getting hurt while trying. I've watched so many videos on back hand spring tutorials but I've never really just gone for the skill. when I do try, I just mess up and flop on my back and give up, But I really want to be able to do this skill. Plz help!

I've been trying to do my front hand spring for a while and then I found one of coach Megan's videos and I learned it in about an hour... Now I'm going to try a back hand spring

thank you so much:-)) i have had my back handspring for a while now but i keep going through phases where i am absolutely hopeless and i cannot throw it. i was really mad at myself because i wasn't progressing at all. i stressed so much and this made me feel so much better

I've been a gymnast for awhile, whenever I'm in the gym doing a backhandspring is completely fine to me. But when I come home and my parents spot me fear overcomes then I just stand there.

Don't be afraid to go back a few steps and start again if you lose it for a bit. Always have a coach there and some mats to land on. Lots of practice before moving on to the next step. Never rush through the steps. Trust the process.

Do you have any tips on keeping your head in? At the end I always stick my head out because I think it helps me push off but in reality I land in a plank.

My body just doesnt do it on floor anymore! I've had it and lost it 3 TIMES! I can do it in the pit and on tumbletrack perfectly but on floor even with a mat it just does not go into the backhandspring and I fail. Any Tips?

Maybe use a bed and mattress for some of the drills? I have broken two beds in the past, so make sure it is very sturdy! Find two people that know how to spot back handsprings and have them spot you before you go on your own. I don't recommend doing it on your own without a spot first! Keep doing those handstands, strength, and bridges to get stronger so you can hold yourself up! Good luck with your practice! Hope you get it!

is there a way to get into gymnastics but not have to do any beam trick? ( when i say 'tricks' i mean like back handsprings front walkovers *maybe* ) please i really would appreciate an answer because i don't know whether to go to tumbling or gymnastics. And it sucks because gymnastics is my passion but i WON'T do any dangerous beam tricks

Taylor Keyes a few years back i did acrobatics which is like gymnastics but safer and only had a mat no beams or bars. Also, acro also does a lot of flexibility and contortion :)

oh its ok lol its just on the floor routines for example a bunch on flips ont he floor and thats it what im wondering is which is more worth it : gymnastics ans risk it with the beam if i can fix it, ... or tumbling to where its just on the floor.....? so hard to choose

I hope you answer this because I really need help. My coaches are no help cause they tell me the same things over and over. But Im a level 3 transitioning into 4 gymnast and I have my back handspring. I had it for a couple months by myself with no spot, but all of a sudden I got a mental block which I've had for a month or so and its getting really annoying cause its competition season now. So how do I get it back. Last time I did it, when I swung my arms back one was further than the other so I twisted and I landed on my neck, and now my minds telling me I can't do it even though I can do it. Do you have any tips? I really need help.

I know this is almost 5 years old but HELP. I can do a bhs EVERYWHERE except on ‘hard’ surfaces cuz I’m scared. No wait, I am able to but I’m just too scared to actually do it. Like, my bhs is completely fine on soft and bouncy surfaces but when I go to the floor I just forget how to do anything somehow.. However, I will do it with a spotter. I just don’t understand what it is tho, I have an arabian in my routine and currently training my roundoff double back and roundoff 2,5 twist but I’m afraid of an bhs...... 😒🤷🏻‍♀️ WTH WHY + My coach was always yelling at me for not wanting to do it and trying to push me to do it. I swear he tried EVERYTHING. Now he doesn’t mention it at much anymore, just saying that I shouldn’t walk away from it lol I think he gave up hope too. He always asks me what I’m so scared of cuz there’s nothing wrong with my bhs and tbh idrk lol. I always somehow think I will fall on my head and die lmao but most of all it’s just scary!

of anyone is scared of hitting the ground backwards, just think before you do the bhs, "swing my arms, jump hard, swing back, lock my arms" etc, and during the bhs, think "hit, hit, hit!" and then its over, and you did it!!

I dont have my bhs on the floor but I have it on the trampoline. I had this problem too. I was undercutting when I jumped and I realised thats why I was scared. I also realised I swinging my head back. If youre learning it on the trampoline, you can do back limbers and about 10cm before your hands touch the ground jump and keep raising the amount before you jump. Also DONT swing your head back. Its so much less scarier and it makes them so much easier to do.

I'm so frustrated! No matter how much I try, I just can't seem to get over the fear! I've been trying to get my back handspring for like a year! I cry sometimes because I get so so so sad because I'm not getting it! uhhhhhh! I have a back walkover, limber, I can do the barrel flawlessly ( so says my coach). I"m just so scared! I just can't seem to trust myself anymore! After being spotted by a different coach, and hyper extended my arm, and forced to keep going, I'm afraid! I NEED SOME HELP!

hayley that was me aa first but go on a thick queen mattress and stand at the end go in the squat position, once done just throw your arms forward and jump back and land on your back then do a back end kick over do it and jump a bit and do it until you can jump and do it on a bed, don’t give up and remember practice makes perfect

I learned my back handspring when I was really young, so I never experienced fear of it. But I do know that my coaches trained me endlessly on the tumble track first before putting me on the floor. So that’s another way to go! :)

That's mine too. I don't have any gymnastics equipment or a gym but I do have a trampoline. I'm to scared to go back on the trampoline though!!!

Lil dadil I can do it alone on a squishy mat but on trampoline I can’t or on floor but the thing is my elbow snaps whenever I put pressure so that’s why I don’t want to on trampoline but everyone thinks it’s just in my head

My coach pushed me (literally) and I sprained my neck and wore a neckbrace and couldn't move my back for two weeks. But hey I can do one now

Ask for a private lesson so you can get a spot from a coach! Do it on trampoline and use mats first! Make sure a coach says you have it first before trying it on your own! Good luck!

Hey Coach Meggin, I have always wanted to try to do a back handspring. I can do a back walkover, a back kickover and a handstand. I have no problem jumping backwards by itself, but whenever I try to combine jumping backward with the arm swings, I always just jump up, land back down on my feet, and then do a normal backbend. Any tips to conquer this fear and "fly"?

Hey @dekkiedexter. It happens the same with me but now I feel confident to do that as I asked for help from some friends and seniors. I am trying to do that alone and because u have practiced so much, I am able to go for it. So just look for some drills ifnu don't have someone to spot and you'll get that.

I don't have access to a gym :( I tried to do it with my dad spotting me but I couldn't do it. I didn't 'trust' him because he's not a coach. I trusted my friend's coach when I went to a BHS clinic with her but it was just a clinic so I will never have the same coach. I really need help. I have trust issues and I am so scared, no matter what.

Meggin, my daughter is struggling with fear! We have been working on a bhs for so long! Thank you for helping me remember to make things light and fun. She feels so much pressure and stress while tumbling, and your vid has inspired me to change the tone of her practices. Yes she can do it, but it has to be fun first!
