I was thinking the same thing. I was addicted to tv as a child. I babysat a 7 year old once as a teen, and I turned off the TV to feed him lunch and he went berserk. He screamed and scared the shit out of me and I immediately turned it back on. He would not come to the table to eat.

I'm a 90s kid and still wasn't addicted to TV. And had great childhood memories as I played more outdoors or with toys. If parents allow TV freely with not much other activities then kids will be addicted to TV. It's not a given

As a kid in the 80's/90's, I can agree with the tv and video games. I would like to add that they were very different times, and had the current technology been available back then, we'd all probably be glued to our screens. I guess what people forget about now, is that it is up to the parents to enstil a balance between technology we use today, and down time. I know when I was a kid, all of our parents made sure that we had time outside, and away from the tv and video games. Parents have to be parents, and not their kid's friends.

One of my sisters made her kids wait until they were 12. I think that's a great idea! They aren't traumatized, and they actually have social skills! Same for another one of my siblings; she and her husband limited screen time, and insisted they go out to play after 2 hours. All of them play sports and have wonderful social skills. My brother and his wife, on the other hand, are completely oblivious to how much time their kids spend online. She in particular is completely addicted to her phone, so of course so are her kids. It's totally sad, especially when you compare their social skills to those of their cousins. The difference is enormous.

I work with children ages 1 - 13 and they all have Ipads and whatnot. When they lose power, get taken away, or left at home - a lot of those kids have a F I T. Its like nothing else matters, nothing else will do - it HAS to be that IPad. They won't do crafts, read, play with other kids, they just pout about the damn tablet.... Its actually a legit thing to be worried about. Some of my kiddos can't use pens or markers well - its true. We've had to limit screen time, or ask other kids not to share their tablets anymore, otherwise you'll see a group of 15 kids around one kid - all staring at this tablet like its God or something. Its really, really sad. I totally support kids and tech - its the future - its gonna happen... But holy hell, they can't just sit on the tablet like a zombie! It REALLY does interfere with their learning process. I have 3 and 4 year olds who cannot speak well because they play on a tablet all the time.

a few things: - kids theses days don't identify a strawberry or potato as that because it doesn't taste like the strawberry yoghurt or french fries they eat in school cafeterias. - take regular breaks from the monitor (look out of the window, close your eyes for 30sec, etc.) - in Europe you can ask for "monitor glasses" (workplace glasses) as form of work security and health improvement. Nowadays you can have them with a UV filter inside which should help against tiring your eyes from the monitor light - why would I need to go to a website to take a "pledge" that my child doesn't do something I don't want it to do? No one will hold you accountable so you need to be convinced yourself that its the right thing to do.

In South Africa we make sure our 6 year old has his/her cellphone before we check they have their lunch boxes. No, I am not a helicopter mother but my kids relied on me for transport to school, extra mural activities and bringing them home as well as taking and fetching them from parties at night. Our schools have become "smart schools" so every lesson requires an I pad or tablet. Besides when my sons were in Gr 8 they were way bigger and stronger than me. If I said get off that phone, the response would be, or "what you going to do, Mom. Couldn't take away pocket money, they didn't get it. My daughter would just ignore me. Were do you people live this is old information. I had a eye protective shield on my computer at work in the 90’s. Also, we were allowed the wear our sunglasses and take time away from the computer screen, if our eyes became strained or fatigued. When you are a kid you are still experiencing things for the first time so you have know idea of what’s going on with your eyes or hands because you are still developing them.

Society was warned multiple times about the validity of these issues. Numerous Sci-fi Books and movies have shown us these consequences. The after-effects of a spiritual death, of ego over ethics. Now We are our own worst enemy. Look deep at the dystopian society of our future, it's born of ignorance and apathy. Because One need, but peer simply, easily and naturally behind realities mirror. Gaze absent mindedly into the discolored lens, look deep and discover the future unto the looking glass of TV and movies. We are "Minority Report". We are "Idiocracy". We are "Gattaca". Among many others, salvation masquerading as entertainment hidden in plain site. Now Dystopia Writ large. Meet your shadow self, embrace your shadow self, become your shadow self. Because We must Love the dark and the light within. If not then... In 1996, Tool's track "Ænima", they spoke of how we fix this shite, and surely we must take to heart the recommend course of action. (Lyrics Truncated for mental stability) "Ænema" 'Cause I'm praying for rain I'm praying for tidal waves I wanna see the ground give way. I wanna watch it all go down. Mom, please flush it all away. I wanna see it go right in and down. I wanna watch it go right in. Watch you flush it all away. Time to bring it down again. Don't just call me pessimist. Try and read between the lines. And I can't imagine why you wouldn't welcome any change, my friend. I wanna see it all come down. Bring it down Suck it down. Flush it down. www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tool/nema.html

The biggest issue for me is that tech companies deliberately design technology to be addictive (see Tristan Harris). We've all had the experience of planning to spend a few minutes on our phone and emerging hours later, wondering where the time went. Kids don't understand they're up against major tech corporations competing for their attention and only know they want to spend all their time on their phones or playing video games. I love the Daily Show, but I think they are minimizing an important issue here.

The problem is not the cell, is the parent that use the cell or tablet as a way to keep children distracted. Instead of teaching kid to behave they give them a cell. I'm seen kids in restaurants so invested in the phone that the mother had to move their jaw to remind them that they eating. That's not normal and can't be good for kids. My sister let her son play with phone and the PS and watch tv, but she set time for that. And, if he ever used more time that given, he can't use any for a couple of days. Today, he is 14, know how to uses technology, and is able to spend hours without using an electronic device; enjoy sports and read books. It's can be done. Kids are not doomed to be tech zombies.

As a pedagogue; don't buy into that 'psychotic junkie' bullshit. But it is a good idea to delay your children having access to screens. Humans are fundamentally still just very smart animals and our offspring has its natural development stages. It is imperative for their senses and abilities to interact with the real world. So giving your kid a screen to look/play with at a young age just to keep them quiet is bad parenting. Take the time and interact with them or give them something tangible for a toy. Their brains require the input of touch, physical manipulation etc. to properly develop. My personal advise: Children of 12-36 months of age should not have more than 10min of screentime, if any. by the age of 10, it is fine for them to have a modern phone as long as you install parental control apps or taught your child a responsible way of using them.

This is like every scare that comes along to about anything new that "kids" seem really into that wasn't normal when adults were growing up. Comics in their day, rock n' roll, TV, D & D, console games, the list goes on. Despite it all, none of it proved to have any of the majorly harmful affects feared at the time. Sure it kept them from doing other stuff, but that is supposing those kids would have done that stuff even if TV, or games, or whatever hadn't been there. The false assumption is that these kids would be outdoors and active if not for whatever. Maybe, or maybe they wouldn't and just at home with a book or playing by themselves. Face it we are in technological world. I think it smarter to manage how they engage with that, give them good rules and guidance early on, and educate them to the dangers. Besides it is something you can share with your children. There are many virtual things you can do on a phone as outdoor activities together.

Why on earth a kid in Elementry, middle and high school needs a phone is beyond my mental grasp. I have 12 years old and 16 years old and none of them have phone, iPad tablet or personal computer, they use 2 family computers in the family room, my cellphone to call friends and none of them is dead yet.

I couldn't help but think of how strong the urge is when you're a kid to fit in and make friends - and how cruel kids can be to the kids that don't fit in. I have a strong feeling that the parent is more caught up in looking good to other parents instead of helping their kids to socially adjust to their surroundings. Now if said kids don't want the phones - then that's great - but if they're getting picked on for it then the parents are just being selfish. Just my .02...

The reason why kids are oblivious to the world around them is because the world around them sucks and is filled with negative people who crap on their dreams. The internet offers answers to questions your parents don't know and loyalty your friends don't possess. Why talk to a few humdrum people in your immediate surroundings when you can converse with someone on the other side of the planet? Want me to look up from my phone? Be more interesting.

Just, make them stay the hell away. It will seriously mess shit up for them, especially babies. I'm talking 2, 3 year olds. Really young kids man, they see f-ing screens before they see the sun. Don't make them watch Cocomelon and some shit. By the time you realise the brain damage you have caused, it will be too late. Take it from someone who has experienced this shit first hand for all his life. Screens can f-k kids up. It's no joke.
