I can't help but remember this song from back in 2011 when my aging mother was in her last days at a nursing home. I visited her every day and on this one the ladies were having Karaoke and my mom was sitting there with them. They were singing old songs from their era and asked if I wanted to sing one. I scrolled through the songs and the only one I saw that I was familiar with was this one. I selected it and did my best to sing along. I was surprised as I read the words, not realizing when I began that they were so strange. Here I was singing it to a group of women in their eighties. This hauntingly beautiful song was what I sang to my mother a week or two before she passed away, and now I will never forget it. In fact, it brings tears to my eyes now when I hear it.

@@shaykatz5648 Yes, every time I hear that song. It is a melancholy song and a melancholy moment. My mom passed shortly after that event. We had a troubled relationship most of my life. I was adopted as a baby and never could quite figure it out. She was very type "A" and could become aggressive. Her last six months were beautiful as she let down her guard. She took some painful jabs at me but I just took it, and was able to get past her shield and find the mom I was always looking for. I still miss her. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you so much for your music! I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. The Pretenders were a part of my daily drive. I moved to Florida where I met my wife to be, before I knew I was going to marry her. The date was set for 10/25/1997. We picked our song's for the wedding and we both agreed on "I'LL Stand by you"- as our first dance song. Thank You for such a beautiful song to mark our beginning in life long love. We are going to celebrate our 25 TH wedding anniversary on 10/25/2022. Chrissie you still rock all these moments forever. Talent has no years - just forever memories.

Years ago, when this song first came out, I heard her in an interview where she said people had always tried to "fix" her phrasing. She eventually realized that she had a different internal rhythm that just wouldn't change and she embraced it and here you go. She makes the words fit in exactly the way it takes to make it work exactly the way it should. Dance to the beat of your own drummer.
