Good job Mary. Putting is some work. Both were great fish. Can you do a tutorial on the harpoon? I need to get one and have been reading about using rubber band and stuff. But I would like to see what you recommend. Also where you like to aim on the halibut. Some say belly some say shoulder meat. 👍
@CaptainZac3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peeling Line many thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Mary is a superstar halibut slayer! Great suggestion on the harpoon tutorial - this is actually on my list of "how-to" videos to record in the near future. I appreciate the nudge - I'll likely make this happen in the next few weeks! I'll try to be as comprehensive as possible since I've harpooned hundreds of halibut and have certainly learned the hard way when things to sideways! In short - definitely aim at just above the centerline behind the gill plate. Harpooning a large fish in the stomach area is a recipe for disaster as this is much softer tissue and has a propensity to tear free. If you plant that dart squarely in the thickest meat above the centerline but just behind the gill plate you'll be in great shape. If you hit the gill plate (too far forward), the dart will probably fail to penetrate and the fish will freak out. Placement is key, timing of the shot is key... much more to come in a few weeks! All the best and thanks again for raising this important topic! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac i use the high speed ( red) for kingfish which are very similar to amberjack as they have about 1.2 metres or 50 inches per crank. But for jigging i use the standard ( gold reel) a 40 inch crank. Purely because with a 30 kilo plus kingfish you cant lift the rod high enough to get a whole crank. These are very strong pelagic fish often found on the surface and also over reefs in 200 to 300 feet of water. Your halibut however grow much much bigger, and can break a leg or a boat. Keep up the good work. Thanks

Hi Rex thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut footage! You are right that electric reels would make fishing in deep water a breeze! Folks around here use electric reels to fish for black cod (sablefish) which are 800-1200 feet deep! Have you ever used an electric reel? Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Yes it did - it often pays off to release the little ones! Tight lines! Captain Zac

I see you have a hewescraft what size is it?
@CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremy - Thanks for watching! Our boat is a 2019 21ft Hewescraft Sea Runner Extended Transom (full hard-top mid-length cabin bulkhead) with a 225hp Honda (main) and 9.9 Honda (kicker). We love the boat so far! I'll be doing a review of the boat this season (now that I have a full season of fishing in this boat under my belt). Are you thinking about buying a Hewescraft?
@jeremystolley48704 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainZac yes I'm looking at a 2008 220 searunner with a 150hr Yamaha 400hrs and 8hr 25 hrs Yamaha kicker. The boat was in storage for the first ten years and the people that have it now bought it 3 years ago with 10hrs from a friend. The boat is in ketchikan $45,000 . I wanted now but couldn't pass up sazing $30,000 on a new one but man I love your boat!!!

@@jeremystolley4870 Wow that sounds like an awesome opportunity! With such low hours on those engines plus being kept in storage (away from the elements), that is practically a brand new boat! Good luck sealing the deal on this awesome boat - you'll love the Hewescraft... a fishing machine!!!

Why no belt
@CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad thanks for watching! Just personal preference - some use a fighting belt while others find it cumbersome and prefer to fight a fish with just the rod. All the best and tight lines! Captain Zac

Need bigger pole an real, much bigger! Here in NW we use that size pole on trout maybe steelhead, nothing bigger, if you can't keep tip of pole out of water, get a bigger one!
@CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut battle! Yes we certainly enjoy the rod-bending halibut action. Sometimes it is fun to catch them on a rod that isn't as stout as a pool stick. Good luck catching salmon and steelhead down in the Pacific NW! All the best and tight lines! Captain Zac
@timbarnett38984 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainZac when tip is held up, the fish takes action through the pole. But when pole is bent down into water the action is now on the line with pole out of equation! That why some many lines are broke when pole bent down so far! Try this: my Navy uncle sent me a Japanese bambo break down fly pole that I used for steelhead on Clackamas River. Now that's a challenge using trout fly rod for steelhead! Even bigger challenge: bank fishing rather that from boat! That will test you the gear an the fish! Nothing better than a 70lb salmon strike on lite gear, with your dad an friends fishing an you get first bite an fish!
@CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Makes sense thanks Tim! Wow catching a big steelie on a trout fly rod sounds like the ultimate test of fishing skill! I would love to see a huge salmon landed from shore on light gear - what a battle!!! Tight lines! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac long time ago Oregon was poisoning entire lake in central Oregon, asked everyone to fish it before they killed everything! We caught "cut-throat" trout size of steelhead! I caught one (trout) that amazed me & dad, when trout starting pulling the entire boat like a salmon with my bamboo trout pole! We put trout on broom stick for pictures, they crushed broomstick!

Why use a Salmon rod . Doesn’t make any sense after you’ve caught enough halibut it becomes one like lifting weights.
@CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick thanks for watching! This wasn't a salmon rod - definitely had more backbone that the 4 salmon rods I carry on board. That said this rod isn't a "pool stick" and does have more play than the average halibut setup. Sometimes we prefer to play the fish on slightly lighter gear. All the best and tight lines! @CaptainZac4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut battle! I love jigging for halibut and often switch between spinning and conventional gear. That Penn Slammer 8500 spinning reel has 43lbs of drag and is capable of fighting some real sea monsters! From your comment I assume you don't like spinning rods. Just personal preference - whatever gets a halibut in the boat! All the best and tight lines! Captain Zac
