As promised, after several comments asking for me to show more cooking on the Frybake, I show how to cook from scratch a quick bread, then create a nice hearty calzone in the backcountry.

This looks great! You've just about got me convinced to add a Frybake set to my list of things to get. While I still see myself going for the lighter weight and convenience of cook systems for boiling water combined with one-pot/freeze-dried/FBC meals on most trips, there's definitely times and places where having the luxury of being able to cook up "gourmet" meals with something like a Frybake would be worth it. In fact, I just splurged on an MSR WindPro II, primarily for winter use, but I also like that the stove will be able to easily support and simmer things like a Frybake in addition to other wider pans, pots, and thus be more versatile for use among a small group. I've also always wanted the speed and efficiency of a JetBoil without the weight, so I also just picked up an Olicamp XTS pot to see how that performs. I'll probably be putting both of those to the test tonight in single digits. Dang...the addition of the XTS to my cookware collection also means I'm going to have more options and thus even more hard decisions to make with gear to take on certain spring/summer/fall trips.

Nice Will! Yeah I love the Frybake, but I don't take it on every trip. It's all dependent on what type of cooking I want to do, and how long i'll be out. I'm more likely to take it on a summer trip where I am already carrying less gear, and can manage the extra space, cause I'm not carrying a pair of long pants, or gloves and the weight difference doesn't add to my base weight. Let me know how the wind pro does. Im interested to see how it performs.

How do you deal with bear poking around after cooking this? Do you change clothes before bed? Are baby wipes enough to get the food scent off of fingers? Are you sleeping very far from the cooking area? New to this. Going to Canyonlands backcountry beginning November with 2 friends

Jaxx Drinkwater If you're willing to carry the extra weight then cooking on the fry bake is killer! The marinara I got from a local pizza shop. Haven't made homemade marinara in a long time. You have a recipe?

Great stuff! Are you happy with the GSI Pinnacle in cold weather?
@BackcountryExposure
@BackcountryExposure 7 жыл бұрын
manitoulinknifeworks yeah I actually am. There's a couple negatives, I feel like the feet are too small to sit on snow, so a piece of tinfoil as a base would be good, or just something to keep it from sinking. When using it in liquid fuel mode (canister upside down) it becomes harder to get fine adjustments on the burner making it sputter a little. But overall it's a great Stove. I'll have a full review soon. Thanks for watching.

Be cautious where you are cutting your food! Highly recommend not cutting anything in your lap- especially in the backcountry. Knife to the leg/crotch zone is no bueno.
