@ZoonCrypticon2 жыл бұрын
@15:00 The different weather is caused by the heavily saturated winterly trade winds, that blow from the north-east towards the small strip of land, named Vietnam, where it cools down and leads to rain. Crossing the border to Laos you reach a higher altitude as the topographical map of that region shows, and clouds get blocked by the mountains.

@10:50 A recommendation - as a foreigner you should at least learn a few words of the country, that you are going to visit and not rely on the notion, that English is a lingua franca everywhere in the world. With the tragic history of war in Southeast Asia caused by Europeans and North Americans in the last century, it is a good gesture to at least try to speak in their local language and will be seen as a friendly act, that you care for the people in the places you visit. Do not forget, that the school system in most of the Asian countries is not as well developed as in Europe or North America, as people live in poor conditions and even little children have to go for work.

For those who are curious, us Brits can either have a 15 day entry stamped on arrival into Vietnam or a 1 month visa. Folks from the USA have to apply for a 1 month visa before entering the country. Loving the series Ben! Love Vietnam

@@oilydoubloonz6001 it's the same with other countries and how visas work. USA citizens, from what I remember, don't need a visa to enter Mongolia but UK citizens do. So Vietnam is in no way unique.

In any country I visited, I always write and memorized: WHERE (especially Restroom when emergency No. 1 calls); HOW MUCH; FOOD; WATER; WHAT (IS THIS? Or name?); BUS STATION; TRAIN STATION. Some more info. in my little notebook. Like when I was in Ho Chi Minh to go to church, I had the hotel staff write how is bring me to church in xxxx (then I wrote how it is pronounced). In Munich at least people speak English, BUT in rural areas, no English so my little German in notes came handy. Also, always bring printed photos for upon Arrival visa applications, photocopies of passport details, plane tickets. What the girl gave you is raw Tamarind, it's really sour. The ripe ones are sweeter.

Mate. I see the language barrier was too much and it can make or break the vibe. In Khe Sanh, that last Vietnamese town. You walked by many "food" places. You refused to eat the chicken just because you saw just the chicken. They probably have soup with chopped up chicken or rice porridge with chicken. Perfectly palatable for a Brit. They like to take the chicken out once it's cooked perfectly. They don't leave it in the broth because it would get overcooked and too soft. They like chicken when it's still a little chewy. I believe you two could have had a more enjoyable experience if you could communicate better in Vietnamese and Lao. Country is Laos. People, food is Lao. You could have asked just simple questions: Where can one eat? "An com o dau?", in Lao : Keen khao yu say? or Han a han yu say?

Well, KFC would be preferable It were supposed to be consistent, enough And there are like one KFC location in that town near the Vietnamese-Chinese border Edit: wrong location

I am not sure what happened between generations on the language barrier? For all the places I have traveled, just a few (18) countries, I found hand gestures are global...such as asking for food, simply use the gesture of "Spooning" to your mouth then point to yourself. Looking for a motel or hostel? Praying hands tilt sideways and lay your head to the side of them. To me simple gestures were common sense and I had no problem getting basics in any country without knowing verbal basics at first. Then I would learn needed words and write down pronunciations in a broken English so I spoke them right. Restrooms, guide, hotel, thank-you...all little words or phrases to make your trip/event carefree...again I don't see why some can't do simple things or where this train of thought was lost. And for the love of God I still think everyone should learn to drive "Standard" shift vehicles to get their license 😉 And I didn't have google or cell phones then..now it should be so much easier to at least know currency conversion, I would never pull out a wad of cash and have them pick what they wanted? I fear the world is doomed for some reason. 😛
