I lived in Minneapolis for three years as a kid, less than two blocks to the lake. We used to do this all the time but would never think about getting on 4 inches of ice especially with slush. I have to admit it brings back some fond memories though. Stay safe.

In north WI we start skating on our pond about mid December with 6”. 12-14” right now. At 8” i clear with the tractor. At 12” i just use the plow truck. My kids cant wait until its deemed safe and then all their friends come over. My wife buys every pair of skates she can find all year long at garage sales or goodwill. We have skates for everyone. I am on multiple versions of DIY zamboni. I am getting close to having what i think is a perfect one for me but my fun is trying to make it and the ice perfect. I just smile at the kids and all the fun. You can’t beat country living.

About 60 years ago, my small rural SE Ohio town’s recreation director would use the city grader to level and build a clay edge only about 6”-8” high. He would then flood from the fire hydrant during cold spells. When it got chewed up, he’d flood another layer. Wonderful memories of walking to check the ice and running home to get our skates. Too many distractions and video games today. Enjoying your channel!

Brings back memories for me as well.. I did speed skating on an Oak floor but the skates I used could be used for ice with no problem. When the local hockey team(non NHL) offered up ice skating I did a session with my sister and the only difference was I am used to being on top of the floor surface where ice skating you are just below the surface cutting your own track.. All good times.. Glad to see you take a break from book keeping.. LoL 😁👍

We have a good size Pond that we skate on when conditions allow. Some tips that we've learned: With a pusher style shovel (one made for manure works especially well.) and a long handle you can skate with it and move snow unbelievably fast. Always keep the handle to one side of you in case you hit a crack so that you don't get a gut punch. A sheet of plywood with a long 2X4 screwed to the top can be pushed by two guys to clear an even wider swath. Power equipment is great, but if you do things manually people can talk and it seems like you get more help. We found a very simple way that allows us to have fire out on the ice. This as a side benefit of having the kids go around the perimeter cleaning up small sticks. We even can move the fire around pushing it with a roofing shovel. There's a lot more I could type, however, you'll find many of your own tricks and tips as you go.

Nice video. As a dad of four outdoorsy girls (grown now) I was always creating things like this on our farm. We used to heat trashcans of water over a fire to pour on the ice. Really made it smooth like glass. Good stuff!!

We had a sign down by our pond 1" a cat can walk on the ice. 2" dogs can cross the ice. 3" one person can ice fish. 4" skating is allowed, be careful. 5" safe for groups to gather on 8" snowmobiles can cross. 10" snows can gather. 12" safe to drive on. (Small cars an btrucks.) 15" ice house can go out. 36" half full log trucks can cross (or a skidder) 48" ice is safe. I don't remember all the levels, these stuck in my mind.

It was funny to see this video pop up because I've been working on getting our small pond nice for the kids to skate on too. I've been watching KZbin videos on ice resurfacing, and this morning I saw this one in my video feed. I clicked on it before I realized it was Hometown Acres! Good job! We had low 30s here in central WI last week, then freezing rain, 5" of snow, and this whole week we are not getting above 5 degrees (last night was -21°). The freezing rain really messed up the nice smooth surface I had, then the snow on top of that made a nasty crust. I also have that Kombi attachment for my KM131R to get the gravel out of the grass, and I got the bristle brushes as well ($85 for both sides... ask your dealer for replacement bristle brushes. One dealer didn't really know what I was talking about and quoted me $160). The brushes work really good to scour the hard, crusty 1/2" of snow off the top of the now bumpy ice surface. I am building steel runners for my 55 gallon plastic barrel Zamboni today. Hopefully it works so we can get those kids back on the ice!

Awesome video! I love the "normal stuff" but this was very cool to see and something that I doubt gets put out very often on channels dedicated to firewood, chainsaws etc... However, saying that, this fits right in with the overarching "theme" of your move from the city, the various opportunities that making that one decision has afforded your family. Again, awesome video and thank you.

I love ice skating. the last time I was able to properly skate was 28years ago in Hamburg, Germany, when then Alster was frozen. it is a river turned into a huge lake right in the city center. The officials measure the ice thickness, and if it is ok, they have have traders with hot drink and roast chestnuts on the ice! It has frozen since but I do not live there anymore, sadly.

Grew up next to a huge lake. Glad to see you were taking safety measures. Snow is a great insulator believe it or not, and ice melts under it, in some conditions. You guys put a lot of work into the ice. Well worth it, to keep folks outside and active this time of year. Its what we did every winter, on our little slice of the lake. Need a break now and then. Time with friends a family is always good.
