I hope you like this recipe. We think it's delicious! It might help that we produce all the (main) ingredients ourselves, of course...
People in Ireland have eaten this for centuries - although when times were tough, probably without the bacon (milk was often used instead).
Is it necessary to say that all the ingredients are boiled until cooked? Bacon takes about 20 minutes/pound, potatoes take about 20 minutes and cabbage about 8 minutes.
Enjoy!
Ok, here are some important website links. Please check them out..

My whole family is Irish and I grew up on this and I hated it. I love it now and just made this this afternoon. Its hard to get a bacon joint for some now but most butchers do it Failing that morrisons always sell one. Not lucky enough to be close to such a lovely farm like this. Gammon works too but it doesn't taste quite the same. I usually throw some bacon lardons in for added flavour if I'm making a huge bug 0ot of it if my joint is too small and I add my potatoes halfway through or your potatoes will break up too much. I dont leave the skin on. I usually spoon a bit of the juice on top of the meat to keep it full of flavour. The leftover juice I then add smoked paprika and one tin of tomatoes add another small portion of bacon lardons and you have a lovely bacon and tomato soup. The paprika gives it a lovely colour and it's so rich I mush up any leftover potatoes to thicken the soup. My boyfriend is from Dublin and he's never heard of this meal lol i was so shocked he'd never eaten it when it was such a staple in our home growing up

I'm sure you know this and chose not to do it, but that liquid you drained has a ton of starch and some flavour. It makes a nice base for gravy with some reduction and a bit of flour at the end to thicken it. That meal looked simple but yummy!

You're right. Sometimes we make a cheese or onion sauce with the juice too. I was just trying to keep things really simple for the video - and actually, it doesn't need the juice because there's so much moisture in the cabbage still. (Plus the butter!)

YES, I remember my dear old mother made the same when I was a kid. She took the water and added flour and in fact a little vinegar too. This then produced a sort of grey coloured gravy but extremely tasty!

@alextate418
@alextate418 7 жыл бұрын
I expect that cute animals are better for viral videos than spuds, but I would be tempted to do a casual Saturday market with some of your potatoes or maybe an honesty box depending on how much passing traffic you get. Often mundane things are really interesting when you don't deal with those type of things yourself. I've asked someone who lives in an extreme cold climate to do a video on how they prepare or how they manage with snow. I live in the sub-tropics so it is interesting to me to see how different place work around their climate. If you have an animal with personality they can develop their own following. I've read that a lot of traffic can come from pininterest but it is all a gamble and more work of course.

Looks wonderful! In the U.S., at least in the Upper Midwest(Michigan checking in here) the equivalent meal would be called a "boiled dinner". Cabbage, Pork(bacon or ham), potatoes, and we often added onions and perhaps carrots. Seasoned to taste with pepper and (if needed) salt.

What you call Bacon in Ireland, is the pork loin, from the back of the pig. What we call Bacon in the U.S. is from the belly of the pig, cured in salt and sodium nitrate, then smoked. It is then sliced thin, and fried for breakfast usually with eggs. What you put in to boil we would call a boneless pork loin roast, and we would put it into the oven or sliced into boneless pork chops and fried in a skillet. That same pork loin, if cured in salt and sodium nitrate, possibly smoked, and sliced thin, we would call "Canadian Bacon." It would also be fried for breakfast.Thanks for the lovely video. Sean.

As promised, I made this dish over the weekend...with just a couple slight variations. First off, your type of "bacon" isn't available here in Nebraska...so I used a nice plump, bone-in, sirloin pork roast and simmered it for several hours with a smoked ham hock....after it was tender, I removed the meat and bones leaving just the rich stock. then I gathered up 4 different types of kale from my garden, and simmered them until tender...then quartered a green cabbage and placed it on to along with red potatoes and some lovely turnips. They "steamed" until done....I have to say the turnips were by far my favorite part....it was wonderful having this bubbling away all day on the stove while it drizzled and rained all day...and soul warming to eat on a cool day....not to mention the lovely meals I still have to enjoy throughout the week....thank you for inspiring me! Oh, and by the way, I did splurge on some authentic Irish butter for the taters and turnips!

Looks great! Looks like what we call pork roast except you cook it in water instead of the oven like we do. Here in Canada, only the pork belly flank is referred to as bacon and it’s often smoked or flavoured. Sliced about 1-1/2 mm thick and fried, we normally eat bacon with our eggs in the morning. Or it can be eaten in sandwiches or added as a protein to salads, and most anything’s else since it’s so yummy. Most every other part of the pig, other than the ham (buttocks) is sold as Pork.

A suggestion. If the bacon is too salty, perhaps put one lot of potatoes in with it at the start, fish them out once ready and put in fridge once cool, to use up later, then put in the next lot in that you will serve with this meal. That should soak up the salt.
