Bacon and Cabbage, Irish classic I make sure to have this once a month. Very tasty and simple. My Irish granny would make this every time I went to theirs on a Weekend 😋

Hello I’m of Greek heritage and my partner is half Irish. She introduced me to this dish and I absolutely love it. It’s great to have it on a Sunday, when it’s cold and wet. Real Irish Comfort Food! Thank you for the instruction on the cabbage, I shall make it that way.

My mum would put a little bit of bicarbonate of soda in with the cabbage to soften it up even more. I've never tasted cabbage anywhere as good as my mum's and I think yours looks identical to what she'd make. My old man used to drink the cabbage water too, which made a change from tea and Guinness. 🤣

Just what I was looking for John. My mum used to make her cabbage just like that and chop it up with the same kind of knife. She also made us drink the cabbage water so no parsley sauce. Shame sounds like a great combination and when I make it I’ll be adding the parsley sauce and of course some boiled spuds.😉

Great video chef and thank you for the value this video brings. I'm doing some research for a local Pub I work for. And the owner wanted more Irish entrees to sever at his Pub. I enjoyed this simple dish that was presented on this video. But I would like to ask you chef. What are good Irish inspired burgers to serve at a Pub? I would greatly appreciate your professional feedback. Thank you for your time chef!

Thanks John. Wee variations on a theme there for me . Never would have thought of parsley sauce for this . Cannot wait to try it!

Nan would throw it all in the same pot, mashing potato and cabbage together. Little less refined but this is always a go to when I'm cold and hungry

Bacon cabbage and spuds, has always been my favourite meal. My mum also used to do it with bacon ribs because the butcher would give the ribs away when you bought other meat from him, not anymore though, have you seen the price of bacon ribs 😱

Great video thanks! Whenever I boil bacon it’s dripping water when I cut it up. Not sure how to get around this!
@johncroweChef5 ай бұрын
Hi there, always ensure it’s fully cooked, so a temperature probe is hand. Also allow it to rest before carving. Happy cooking

is that a gammon joint ? or what do i ask my butcher for ?

Various cuts will do including slipper shoulder, collar, gammon joints.
@dennisdunne5883 жыл бұрын
We cannot get that cut of meat here. I'd have to use a pork shoulder and brine it myself. EDIT: That piece of meat appears to be the large cut of the ham (rear leg) which here in the States is usually cured and smoked and fully cooked.
@valdeezycleaver Жыл бұрын
If you used anything besides ham, use a cut of loin and cure it.

There are many interpretations of a recipe. This is our family one which reminds me of my childhood. Im sure for you too it’s a family favourite as well happy cooking.

As an American, I get confused because what you all call bacon is what we call ham. So if ham is bacon what do you call ham? Stupid question, I know🤔...
@ssp7757 ай бұрын
Real bacon starts like this. Then butchers cut into thin bacon strips. Ask for your American butcher to give you a block rather than slice into bacon.
