You're probably not ever going to do this again considering the work this must of taken, but if you did want to keep the grey in there, pixel artists will do a checker board pattern like you'd see on a chess board for grey, doing darker greys by removing white every so often, and doing lighter greys by adding more white every so often. Might be useful in future ones if you continue to do this song in other mediums though.
