Years ago, was part of a TMNT tabletop game. The group spent weeks coming up with a themed group of heroes, we all settled on the same mutant animal (Porcupines) and had chess names "King, Bishop etc etc." We were super hyped about the characters and the game. Had a guy who joined my homebrew, and after several sessions asked me if I'd consider playing a NPC in his Ghostwalk campaign. He gives me a 50 page single spaced dossier on the NPC Nobleman and the 30 retainers/henchmen he has for an entourage... All OP to the min/max. So I tell him after reading all that, "I'm going to play this guy like a Go'ould System Lord travelling with his First Prime and Elite Body Guard." He says, "Great! That's exactly what I want!" So... When I show up to the game, I see every reject That Guy in the entire gaming community sitting at his table... Well, shit... This is going to be a hot mess. Denarii begins with this murder hobo gang in the process of dessicrating and robbing a sacred family graveyard... Under this NPC Nobleman's protection and on his property no less. My men deploy tactically, surround them with crossbow & longbow enfilade, and the First Prime charges them with their crimes against the realm they have just been caught commiting red handed. Their response was to tell the Nobelman to piss off. The DM shits himself because he sees the TPW about to go down and asks me to show leniency, because in this world thieves and rogues are "respected and admired". I called bullshit and asked him what he would think about strangers digging up his mother's grave and preforming lewd acts on her corpse. He just stuttered a little and looked down at the table. I then proceeded to pin cushion the party of 6, and incarcerate the 2 survivors that were clinging to life. I destroyed the bodies of the dead so they couldn't be resurrected.

My first campaign was pretty memorable because I somehow managed to betray the party and the DM and other players were super cool with just rolling with it. My character was a ninja-themed Tiefling Kensei Monk that took a level in Rogue, making him something of a dirty fighter that would pull cheap tricks in combat who would dress in all black and wear an Oni mask to hide his true race. And as a fun backstory thing, I collaborated with another party member, who also decided to play a Monk, to have both of our characters come from the same monastery. The third member of this party was a min-maxed Paladin/Fighter Dragonborne that would often just roll religion whenever he was confused or lost about something, and with the rest of us being a bit of a weaker class for burst damage dealing with pretty sparse encounters, we basically played it like we saw it, with the Paladin being a stupidly powerful hero and the rest of us being more down-to-earth brawlers. Things really began to click during an early adventure where our group raided a Goblin camp that happened to have a full-on Ogre guarding one side of the camp! Being low-leveled, we opted to sneak in to get what we wanted, but the goblins quickly found the Paladin and quickly decided to sick their pet Ogre at him. However, because he was wearing heavy armor and a shield and managed to cast Shield of Faith, his AC was at around 22, so despite their best attempts none of the enemies could actually hurt him for multiple rounds in a row. Meanwhile, my character got a bad stealth roll and got caught. But instead of giving up and fighting, they tried to go for the tricky intimidation route by using thaumaturgy to shout "KNEEL, MORTALS, OR YOU SHALL BE STRUCK DOWN BY DIVINE PUNISHMENT!" Hard cut to the Ogre, who had broken his weapon trying to smash through the Paladin's holy shield at this point. The Paladin tries to convert the Ogre. IT WORKS. Eventually, as the campaign goes on, we start learning about the pantheon of gods in this world, including one evil god that seems to be in charge of all the trouble that's been happening around the countryside. Because my character is a Tiefling, as we start to get closer, the dark god starts to send my character visions every now and then, promising him power and riches, very standard villain stuff. However, thinking about it, my character was always a scumbag who was brought up in poverty and fought for everything they had. A good hero would decline, but I was very careful to never tell him 'No', while also not exactly agreeing to the demands, either. So, the plan was simple. I decided at some point I'd betray the party and join the forces of darkness. The only problem is that Paladin... in a one-on-one fight, I wouldn't stand a chance. This guy managed to action surge double-crit Smite a boss monster and basically one-shotted it, what normal adventurer in the right mind would fight that? So I slowly prepared, gathering sleeping drugs, handcuffs, etc. all under the guise of in-case we had to take an enemy alive. Little did they know I planned to use them on my own allies before sneaking away before my Monk friend ever had a chance to know. If I could just capture that one Paladin, my dark work would be complete. Eventually, sessions passed and I finally got the chance I wanted. Without telling the DM (which was really dumb on my part) my Tiefling walked into the enemy stronghold with the rest of the party, Gnolls swarming the area as guards as we prepared to bust our way in. And then, I went for it! Slight of Hand to use the sleeping drug on our Paladin right as combat started! The other players were baffled and confused, the Paladin thought I misspoke, but I made my intentions absolutely clear as I succeeded to drug our shining hero. Thinking fast, the DM had the Paladin roll concentration to stay awake, but they did rule that he would become drowsy, gaining disadvantage on combat rolls. Now, the treachery would truly begin as the Gnolls swarmed the area to help me, now using each round to try to slight of hand the Paladin until I finally managed to put him to sleep for the remainder of the fight, with the other Monk being knocked unconscious shortly afterward. Thankfully, they weren't an asshole DM because they just had the Gnolls lock the remaining heroes up instead of killing them. After all, if they died then it'd be the end of the campaign, and none of us wanted that. Not when things were suddenly getting super interesting now that the plot had been thoroughly derailed. But they also had to be able to do something, so several failed strength saves later, the other players finally managed to break out of their shackles and escape, now ready to re-challenge me and the Gnolls to defeat us once and for all. After getting outside, the heroes were swarmed with enemies as we were quickly broken into two groups. In one, the DM's planned boss monster would fight the Paladin in mortal combat to keep him occupied while, in the other, a circle of Gnolls surrounded me and the other Monk as the two of us, former friends and long-time allies, clashed in an exchange of blows over the fate of the world! And while his monk was stronger due to my one level in Rogue, mine was willing to fight dirty, using a bottle of booze as an improvised weapon to soak the Monk in alcohol before lighting him up with Hellish Rebuke. I even went as far as to throw our old flag in his face as a distraction to get off sneak attack damage, but it was no good! He'd seen me do the same trick to enemies before, and he was prepared to avoid it! At the end of it all, in a surprisingly close duel, it was over. He had won and I'd lost. However, despite everything, the bond of our Monks was too strong. The other Monk couldn't find it in his heart to kill mine despite everything. My character demanded he should be taken out, the Tiefling went on and on about how he'd just betray the heroes again and about how he only wanted power, but the other Monk refused to end him. Instead, he simply tied the Tiefling up and got on a horse, our two characters riding off into the sunset together with the Monk vowing to watch over my character and stop him no matter what he tried to do. Both of us were looking to make new characters anyway, and it was just too perfect of an ending to their character arc to disagree with. And then the new characters kind-of sucked and we got an obvious cheater in the group that took all the fun out of it, but that's a COMPLETELY different story for another day.

My first DM, made a great job introducing my group of friends to TTRPGs, it was our second year at high school and this new guy arrives, we immediately became friends with him, he was a cool guy, we had the same hobbies at the time. But then he asked if we would want to play a homebrew TTRPG, it wasn't really D&D, but we used D&D classes and races and stats to make the character creation more simple, and for the sake of fun, our game wasn't too serious, I mean, our actions had consequences, many times our characters almost died, but regardless, he was taking easy with us, after all, it was just a game that we played during some classes to have some fun with a different experience. We only played 2 campaigns together, mostly because trying to GM through discord calls is rather difficult to all of us, but we at least tried new ideas from different members of the group, like, a friend of mine had an idea of a campaign located at the world of Zelda: breath of the wild, and our characters would be in a mission to help to build a new settlement, like a small village, so we would need to manage resources, search itens and workers, negotiate resources, and I even tried to GM a Homebrewed the Witcher RPG, it would happen after the events of Witcher 3, the world has been full of monsters again, and the old witchers of the school of the wolf were nowhere to be seen, humanity thought they were doomed, until a mage came up with a mutagen, not as powerful as the original Witcher mutagen, but would compensate it's lack of quality with quantity, thanks to that, much more witchers were able to survive the trial of the grasses, so because of that, some Witcher schools were reopened and fixed, as well as new ones were created from the ashes of the ancient ones, like the school of the scorpion, or the school of the wolverines, unfortunately, my planning abilities weren't so good, so GMing always made me feel anxious, mostly because I always felt I was doing a shit story, so we never even had a second session. Although now I've been trying to create a new campaign with real systems in a world 100% mine, it's a slow progress, but I hope I'll be able to do it this time. Sorry for the huge commentary, I just respect a lot this friend of mine, that gave me a new hobby, and a new activity with my friends besides playing online games

There was a Shadowrun GM I had years ago who was awful. Because shadowrunning is a "masculine" profession, the GM required all guy characters to be straight and women characters to be bi. If your character was a guy and was bi or gay, the character died a few seasons after creation. If your woman character was straight or lesbian, the GM'S GMPC would show up, seduce the woman, and make her bi. And speaking of the GM'S GMPC. This was the GM'S favorite character from when he played. The GMPC would alternate between employer or BBEG. But, the GM said that if we attacked his GMPC that our characters would die. Eventually, the GM inserted the GMPC into the party as the leader, and we wanted nothing to do with it. We prepared to fight. The GMPC attempted mind controlling the party. Out of a party of 8, 5 resisted the mind control, and those 5 were all shot in the head. The 3 who failed became the GMPC'S pawns and we all quit the game

I feel like many of these DMs are mentally unstable and just crave to be the center of attention or something. Perhaps they got neglected as kids and are trying to make up for it, idk. But mary sues are literally so boring. It's like the world around them doesn't exist most of the time, only when it's to show how awesome and badass they are, and then it stops making sense when it has nothing to do with them. Even heard of GM's trying to rush over some guy's PC character development just to keep trying to put their own PCs on a pedestal, with ridiculous background stories and half hour long monologues about how everyone thinks they're hot shit. DM role attracts an unusual number of narcissists, I've noticed.

I can think of two times where a player said to me "you are a better DM than [insert name]", the first was the most popular guy in high school and the second was the most beautiful girl from my class in college. The first situation was when my best friend tried to run an one-shot to my group. The group was formed by a bunch of noobs and the MVP was this jock that we'll call "Captain America". Cap was the last person I would expect to see playing RPGs, but he was the most engaged player. Yes, he was a bit of a power gamer, but he was also a great role-player and his character's backstory was amazing. I was talking to my DM (and best friend) about what a blast I was having with this group and about how creative they were, so he decided to run a one-shot for us. He just couldn't handle the crazy tactics and outside the box thinking of these noobs, struggling to present any challenge to them and to rule how their ideas would work. At the end of the session, Cap reached me and said "Damn, if that's how normal DMs are like, we are lucky that we started playing with you." The second situation was when a guy decided to run a campaign in his precious homebrew setting. He invited people from our class, including me, his girlfriend (a theater kid), and the most beautiful girl in our class (we'll call her "Sunshine"). I remember that this girl was so beautiful that once she started a conversation with me at the buss and the whole time the only thing going through my head was "Why is a girl as beautiful as her talking to a guy like me?". At the time, me and Sun weren't in good terms, since I'm a hardcore nerd and she is a hardcore normie, we would fight for the right to choose the topic of conversations and such. Nevertheless, the game started, my character was the brother of the DM' girlfriend's character and she insisted that we planned our backstory together, thing is, she called late at night to do this, so she basically wrote the whole thing while I just agreed to whatever she said. I'm not really that big into complex backstories, preferring to just define a basic motivation for my character. Needless to say, often during the game I would do or say something only to hear the DM's girlfriend scream "Your character wouldn't do that!" or something along those lines. About Sun, she was terribly bored and the DM wasn't doing anything about it. Eventually, she decided to do something to get the story moving, so she rolled a D20 while saying "Fuck it, I'll attack him!" only to have the DM's girlfriend scream "You can't roll the dice before the DM tells you to!" at her. She got so scared by that reaction, that she kept her mouth shut during the rest of the game - Sun even told me later that she was afraid that she may have offended the DM's girlfriend somehow and that she doesn't feel comfortable playing with her (add this to the fact that the DM's girlfriend would make pretty inappropriate comments about Sun's body from time to time). Eventually, I decided to run my own campaign. When asking for guidelines about character creation, I just told the players to create whatever they wanted and that I would find a way to make it fit, since I'm pretty open to homebrew and reflavoring. Sun asked if she could play and I let her, then she asked me what kind of character she could make and I advised he to make a combination of two of her favorite character. As much of a normie as she was, she liked Dragon Ball (the first one, not Z) and Teen Titans, so she asked if she could play as a combination of kid Goku and Raven. When I said yes, her eyes literally sparkled with wonder. My campaign starts and I put her on the spot, some bandits surround her as she walks down the street, then I ask what she will do. She asks me what can she do and I just reply "whatever you want". What proceeded was the most glorious beatdown I've ever seen, with her character violently destroying all the attackers. From then on, Sun was completely immersed on the game, being engaged in every scene, cheering loudly after every victory and cursing at every bad roll. I've never seen a more beautiful smile than her's during that game. Some weeks later, Sun was telling about how other DMs say she is a "problem player", but I reassured her that I loved to run games for her and that the DMs girlfriend also complain about my games a lot - mainly because of SJW reasons, I kid you not. When she heard that this girl complained about my games, Sun immediately exclaimed "Don't listen to her, you're best DM I know!"

It was a surprise attack so I had disadvantage. My character was instant killed (dealt more than double my health). This was the second character I made because the DM killed my first character. For my third character I made that campaign I picked a wizard. First session the party was camping in a forest. I used my wizard to cast tiny hut for the night. The rest of the party decided to sleep outside the hut. The DM said a giant randomly came and attacked us, but said the Giant ignored everyone outside and decided to only attack my hut and me inside. The DM said the giant ignored the other players outside. The DM then had my character sit out 2 entire sessions because this character was "new to the party" and therefore did not get to join the party on their adventure back into the city. When my character finally got to join up the DM told everyone to do a perception roll when walking down the road. He then said my wizard spellbook was pickpocketed and my character saw nothing. At that point with all my spells permanently gone, I quit the campaign.

I find myself in the position of the DM more that a player. I don't mind however, because I like making stuff up. And all of those DMs are wierd. The second one looks like a heavy railroaded with 0 tolerance for deviation. So such a minor thing like elves being immune to sleep results in a total train wreck. FFS. He could easily have RPed thugs telling the party elves to surrender and let themselves get blindfolded and tied "so nobody needs to get hurt". Maybe explain to players OOC that the plot requires them to get captured to get to important plot point and politely ask them to comply. Done. Train wreck awerted. The first one is... Wierd. I don't like meta gaming as much as the next guy, but there is a line between what can be counted as meta gaming and what should be counted as such. The obvious example is relation between characters. You as players are OK with characters cooperating, because you as players are playing this game together. But your characters not having previously established relationships should be more likely to distrust or ignore other characters. Your characters getting together and forming a party already involves a huge amount of meta gaming even if you don't realise it. I've been in games where we were expected to play this "total strangers" scenario out and that resulted in my character outright killing another one. (the killed character was an edgelord that decided to start by brooding in the corner, not contacting anyone, and then trail the party from the shadows. We noticed him, thought that he was a spy sent by our rivals, executed him and dumped his body in a ditch). Also any time your character makes a decision based on some game rules, this is meta gaming. And only after the fact that this meta gaming is done you might think up some justification for why a character might decide this not operating within the rules of the game. So being this controlling to ban OOC banter not only during sessions but outside of them? Come on dude. This "meta gaming" only helps build up chemistry between characters, and usually results in better story and more fun for everyone. And the final DM... Dude, you have thd whole world to mold to your will. Leave those characters to their players.

So I gotta say that I think might have to side with the DM in the second story re: the sleeping gas. I mean, if it was just "sleeping gas" and not a magical spell which makes you sleep, it's not really magically induced sleep, is it? I mean, it's an anesthetic, not a spell. A creature who doesn't _have_ to sleep is still going to be knocked TF out by it. They're fae, but that doesn't mean they're immune to falling unconscious. EDIT - Ok I jumped the gun. Apparently the GM did say it was specifically magic gas. All he had to say was that it wasn't magical and there'd be no issue. What a dope. Also, a crap GM, but yeah.

Story about shitty railroad dm- if ever you feel like crying or sobbing because your character died, whether it be justified or cruel or story or unceremoniously.... Don't cry, remember it's a game, don't become so attached to your character that you will feel and need to cry. If it upsets you pack your stuff up. Rewrite the concept in your head bring the character back in another game or don't and accept that that was how it happened. It's unhealthy to be so attached to a character that it causes a visceral reaction like that. Story about Frankenstein DM: To DM's out there, try your best to find media that your players do not consume to gain inspiration. This way they'll be surprised and they'll never figure it out. Now, keep in mind it is completely okay to collect inspiration from all media mainly because there is no more original thought. Get it out of your head you are never going to be the next Tolkien or George Martin or whomever. Some chimpanzee has written your story in that room full of chimpanzees and typewriters. Don't worry about it To players: get your head out of your ass. You're no better. Your characters have been done before and your story has already been written by someone else. Don't be so entitled. Granted the DM should have did better with collaboration and asked about the changes or look outward into your feelings and thoughts about your characters rather than inward to his idea of cool. But seriously, don't be like these players please. Look to see potential in situations and a way out if you don't like it. Feel comfortable going to your DM and expressing how you weren't all together fond of an idea. And if the DM is not responsive in a positive way, check another red flag

DMs that only allows talking in character is usually just on a sad power trip. It's a game not a LARP nor a cult. The same goes for punishing the characters because the player "disobeyed", how does that make sense if meta gaming is so wrong?

For some things I do agree talking about characters should be done in game in character but he is obviously being a prick. Like before a campaign starting I would probably advise players to save it for the session so you have more opportunities to organically bring up backstories and personalities during introductions or slowly over the course of the campaign as characters get to know each other for more roleplay but just like talking about what classes, builds, or alignments is just good to talk about in general for party balance and cohesion ahead of time.

Wait, but Fey ancestry means that MAGIC cant put you to sleep. Assuming a sleeping gas is a kind of poison/ chemical, woudltn it be able to bypass that? If tahts the case, then Im kinda leaning to agree with the DM on this one.
@sharkjumpingwalrus67442 жыл бұрын
They point out at 12:58 that the D.M. stated the gas was magical to justify the imitate effect as magical gas. So the D.M. ran into that problem by trying to cheat the players to control where his session went. The players were just using the D.M.s own wording against him.

I had a bad railroading DM, who enjoyed beating us with nat20 rolls all the time, and he didn't give us any loot and almost all encounters were basically the same, combined with some stupid story choices. I want to write that story down as well, so others can "enjoy" it and hopefully learn from it.

“Being that a majority of us were queer” sorry but I get the sense that the narrator isn’t reliable. Nothing wrong with clamping down on metagaming and not letting players have telepathic conversations to exchange ideas. You want to make plans? Do it in character. Clearly the dm was getting increasingly annoyed that the players kept flouting a basic rule. Just stop talking out of character? It’s not hard. It’s really not. I’m pressing X to doubt so hard on the first story.

12:30 to be fair to the dm, the players were just kinda being annoying “well, achkually I don’t get knocked unconscious as my pc doesn’t need to sleep” and when he’s doing a mandatory cutscene esc moment I can understand him being frustrated there

Story 1: I'm not sure I believe all of OP's story about this guy. A lot of what OP said was supposition, and he seemed to have a thing against this guy, so I'm not sure how reliable of a witness he is. Story 2: OP was argumentative and had a cursory understanding of the rules. Most notable, if the DM says the knockout gas works, it works. I'm not saying it was a good DM or the right way to go, but arguing with the DM is never a good idea, and honestly, I think the DM killed their characters because he was simply sick of their shit (and wasn't a very good DM). Elves can be knocked unconscious. That's what happens at 0 HP, and there are several different things than just sleep that can render a character unconscious. Honestly, OP looks just as bad as DM in this story. Story 3: This one seemed more plausible. OP seemed to know how the game works, and DM seemed pretty uncompromising, and didn't even seem to have a good reason for it. I can get behind OP in this story.
@Unahim3 жыл бұрын
How can you possible take that away from story 2? The OP clarified that the DM described it as magic sleep gas... which elves are indeed immune to. He's clearly not adverse to simply forcing them to go with what he wants (like: FORCING them to go to the thieves guild when they didn't even think they had any reason to) so even he must have seen at that moment that he had no foot to stand on. Still, whether they were immune or not is only a small factor here: it makes sense players would argue ANY point to try and regain a semblance of agency in the massive railroad he was forcing on them. You can't blame them for that, he pushed them to that limit. Even if they had not been immune, railroading the party into going somewhere and then asking them to make persuasion rolls only to then set them up with an instant-KO situation is clearly asinine to the extreme. And to then make the argument "Well, you didn't ask if you got to keep your weapons" to explain disarming them when they call him on his BS is moronic to the extreme; clearly the burden is on the one creating a change in situation (weapons being taken away), not on everyone else to ask "Is everything still as it should be considering we didn't hear about anything changing?" And then just killing off the pet, being petty by counterspelling the dimension door (yeah, totally a thing a bunch of thieves would be prepared for!) I'm all for giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, but let's not be contrarian here. :P Story 2 DM was a massive bully. As for story 1: we only ever hear from one side of course, but the DM comes across as pretty horrid, and if an entire party piece by piece gives up on a DM it's not too hard to see he is the common factor in all of that, not the individual players. After all, if it had been OP, surely once he left the game would have recovered and been peachy?
